The Bible and the Rule of Faith (Classic Reprint) by Abbé Louis Nazaire Bégin Pdf

Excerpt from The Bible and the Rule of Faith I do not aim at awaking religious antipathies, creat ing agitation, sowing the seeds Of discord in our hitherto peaceful country; God forbid I should contribute to such an end! I only wish to show on What a fragile basis Protestantism is founded; to reply indirectly to a considerable number of Objections, so. Peremptorily made as to appear unanswerable; at the same time, I wish to strengthen the faith Of the weak, to arm them against the seductions of error, and to present the sweet light of Catholic truth to those who are not yet in our ranks. How many poor souls in the bosom of Protestantism are a prey to the anguish Of doubt! They are more numerous than is generally believed; they feel the need of some solid basis on which to found their belief, and they find it not. One resource remains Open to them, there is one infallible means of their finding that calm after which they sigh; they can enter the Catholic Church, and cling to the immovable rock which Jesus Christ Himself has given it as a foundation. The Rule of Faith and Biblical Interpretation by Robert C. Fennell Pdf

Among the dizzying array of approaches to reading the Bible, the oldest, most revered interpretive tool rises above the rest: the Rule of Faith. Faithful interpretation of Scripture in the postmodern context has much to learn from this ancient principle. Deeper engagement with the sacred text flourishes with the assistance of the Rule of Faith. That engagement in turn renews the Body of Christ. This book explores the interpretive practices of great reformers and renewers of the church, including Luther, Calvin, and Wesley, who kept up a lively dialogue with the ancient authors of the Christian movement. In that dialogue, they discovered a dynamic guide to better exegesis. Robert C. Fennell provides a compelling account of faithful interpreters from the past whose example inspires contemporary readers as they seek to understand the Bible.

The Rule of Faith by Everett Ferguson Pdf

The rule of faith was a summary of apostolic preaching and teaching made by writers of the early Christian centuries. As such it carries great importance for what the early church considered basic to its being and identity. It was not a fixed text, like a creed, but varied in wording and content according to circumstances. Yet, despite this flexibility and diversity, there is a clear Christ-centered, Trinitarian core at the heart of the rule shared by the early apostolic churches. In this short guide, Everett Ferguson introduces readers to the primary sources of our knowledge of the rule, the variety of ways in which ancient Christian authors spoke of the rule, and different scholarly attempts to interpret this ancient evidence. Ferguson argues that statements of the rule of faith were used to instruct new or potential converts, to combat false teachings, and to provide a framework for interpreting the Scriptures. He maintains that the rule retains considerable importance for churches of the twenty-first century.

The Bible and the Rule of Faith by Louis Begin Pdf

This work is divided into three sections. After a short introduction on the rule of faith in general considered the Protestant Rule of Faith in considered, then the Catholic Rule of Faith. Let us consider this on what the Bible consists: "I interrogate any Protestant whatever who professesto believe in the Word of God contained in the Bible, and in the Bible alone, and I put to him this question: Which are the books composing the Bible? How many are there? He will doubtless, in the first place, cite me all the Protocanonical books of the Old Testament.""But why do you not admit the Deuterocanonical books into your Bible? What reasons have you forexcluding them from it. Because, he will say, the Protocanonical, which form the canon of the Jews, were comprised in the collection of the Scriptures in the time of Jesus Christ and the Apostles, whilst thus much cannot be said for the Deuterocanonical. Now it may be seen in many places of the New Testament that our Saviour and the Apostle's have approved this collecetion asbeing composed of inspired books; we have therefore divine testimony to the inspiration of the Protocanonical Books."Later on we read: "It is not sufficient for our adversaries to prove by texts that the Holy Scriptures are profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct; Catholics admit this as well as Protestants, since they make use of it in their theological theses and in their preachings; but they must prove that they alone and exclusively are profitable.""Neither is it sufficient to show that in many cases the sacred books throw light on questions now under consideration; that is an incontestable fact which we most willingly admit; but it must be demonstrated that they contain all the light of which we have need. It is not sufficient to prove that the Bible contains revealed truths, the Word of God, a part of the remote rule of faith-this every Catholic would concede without the slightest hesitation; but it ought to be clearly established that the Bible contains all the Word of God, all the revealed truths, and is the only rule of faith."This and many other questions on the Rule of Faith are ably considered and the truth sought out and found.

The Bible, the Church, and Authority by Joseph T. Lienhard Pdf

Since the early days of Christianity a tension has existed between the authority of the Bible and the authority of the Church. This has been further heightened by the question of Bible translation: How does the Word stand firm and yet continue to speak to a changing Church? Joseph Lienhard, a specialist in Early Christianity, examines the evolution of the Christian canon by casting this question against the life of the early Christians. Among the topics treated are the Christian use of Jewish Scriptures, the Catholic and Protestant Old Testaments, the emergence of the New Testament, the struggle for the right interpretation of the Scriptures, the problem of inspiration, and modern attempts to explain the Church's New Testament canon theologically. The book questions the use of historicist methods of interpretation and appeals to the Rule of Faith as the right norm for interpreting the Scriptures in the Church. Joseph T. Lienhard, SJ, earned his doctorate at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) with two dissertations on Paulinus of Nola and Marcellus of Ancyra. His work is in patristics. He taught at Marquette University from 1975 to 1990, and since 1990 has been at Fordham University, where he is also chair of the department of theology. He has published Ministry in the Message of the Fathers of the Church series and other titles.

The Rule of Faith by Ephraim Radner,George Sumner Pdf

This collection of essays presented at the 1997 Scholarly Engagement with Anglican Doctrine (SEAD) Conference counters some of today's New Testament scholarship, particularly that of the Jesus Seminar. Asserting that only canon and creed can render knowledge of God, two generations of scholars speak for a retrieval of more traditional modes of interpretation by and for today's church. The Rule of Faith features three keynote addresses by eminent New Testament scholar the Rev. Dr. Brevard S. Childs, Sterling Professor of Divinity at Yale University, one of the most notable Biblical theologians in contemporary American Christianity. It also contains works by several younger scholars, many of whom studied with Dr. Childs and represent an emerging generation of orthodox Christian leadership for the Episcopal Church, including Ephraim Radner, George Sumner, Kathryn Greene-McCreight, Stephen Holmgren, R.R. Reno, Christopher Seitz, Kendall Harmon, William Witt, and Chris Brown. Their writings give voice to scholarly engagement with the creedal Christian faith in the Episcopal Church.

Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation by Pope Paul VI. Pdf

This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
