The Big Dig by Dan McNichol,Andy Ryan,Massachusetts. Dept. of Public Works Pdf

The first book ever written about Boston's Big Dig--the largest, most complex highway construction project ever embarked upon in U.S. history! This regional blockbuster reached #1 on the Boston Globe's bestseller list. Filled with dozens of remarkable photos and fascinating archival illustrations, it pulsates with details only an insider like Dan McNichol, former director of the project who was in at the conception, could provide. For example: During peak construction years, the Big Dig spends nearly $110,000,000 a month. The project will place 3.8 million cubic yards of concrete, enough to build a sidewalk three feet wide and four inches thick from Boston to San Francisco...three times. Rats! Some city officials told the public that construction would dislodge millions of rats from deep down under the city. When The Big Dig is finally finished, Boston will have over 200 acres of new parks, its skyline will be transformed, and its infamous traffic nightmares will be a thing of the past.

Big Dig by Paul Stickland Pdf

Heavy machinery rumbles into action when Paul Stickland brings his pop-up wizardry to a building site. Bulldozers, cement-mixers, cranes and more appear in seven exciting spreads with a magnificent fold-out finale. Stickland's talent lies not only in engineering brilliant pop-ups but in accurately portraying the details of machinery with warmth and wit. A lilting, chant-aloud text makes this a book kids will demand again and again, and the sturdy, self-activating pops make for a book far more destruction-resistant than most pop-ups.

The Big Dig by Linda Barnes Pdf

The Boston PI excavates her city’s buried secrets in this “shrewd . . . smartly told” thriller by the Anthony Award–winning author (The New York Times). Six-foot-tall, redheaded ex-cop and Boston-based private eye Carlotta Carlyle is “the genuine article: a straightforward, funny, thoroughly American mystery heroine” (New York Post). Boston’s largest urban renewal undertaking in modern history draws Carlotta into an undercover gig at the site. It comes at the request of a disgruntled hardhat who suspects the multibillion-dollar project has set off a groundswell of graft, kickbacks, and fraud. The case hasn’t unearthed anything but dirt, so Carlotta is tempted into moonlighting on another: a Beacon Street socialite who’s deeply concerned about her vanishing tenant, a dog groomer named Veronica James. Since there’s no possible way Veronica would run off without her beloved Norwegian wolfhound, Carlotta’s suspicions are definitely aroused. And when her big-dig informant falls to his death in a highly dubious accident, Carlotta’s torn between two disparate investigations: an unlikely kidnapping and a likely murder . . . Until they begin to converge, “and watching Carlotta tease out their deep, disturbing connections is pure pleasure” (Kirkus Reviews). The Big Dig is the 9th book in the Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Completing the "Big Dig" by Transportation Research Board,National Research Council,National Academy of Engineering,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment,Committee for Review of the Project Management Practices Employed on the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel ( Pdf

Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, a 7.8 mile system of bridges and underground highways and ramps, is the most expensive public works project ever undertaken in the United States. The original cost estimate of $2.6 billion has already been exceeded by $12 billion, and the project will not be completed until 2005, seven years late. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (MTA), the public steward of the project, requested that the National Research Council carry out an independent assessment of the project's management and contract administration practices, with a focus on the present situation and measures that should be taken to bring the project to a successful conclusion. This report presents the committee's findings and recommendations pertaining to cost, scheduling, and transitioning from the current organization dominated by consultants to an operations organization composed largely of full-time MTA staff. The report recommends that MTA establish an external, independent, peer-review program to address technical and management issues until the transition to operations and maintenance is complete; begin a media campaign now to teach drivers how to use the new system safely; and develop, immediately implement, and maintain a comprehensive security program.

Florida's Big Dig by William G. Crawford Pdf

This book is the story of people of vision and courage, of a small group of prominent Saint Augustine investors who conceived of the Florida waterway and began the first dredging work; of an obscure group of New England capitalists who provided significant financing and obtained a million acres of undeveloped Florida public land in pursuing what was, at best, a speculative enterprise; of innumerable citizen groups like the Florida east coast chamber associations and the larger Atlantic Deeper Waterways Association that demanded at the turn of the last century what they believed was the peoples right-a public waterway, free of the burden of tolls; and finally, of the U>S> Army Corps of Engineers, who conducted all of the Florida waterway's early surveys and assumed the project's control in 1929 to convert what was once a private toll way into Florida's modern-day, toll-free Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
