The Black Tulip (Classic Reprint) by Alexandre Dumas Pdf

Excerpt from The Black Tulip Alexandre Dumas, or to give him his full name, Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born at Villers-Cotterets, dep. Aisne, July 1803. His youth was somewhat idle and irregular. In 1823 he went to Paris, where he was employed for some time as a clerk in the bureau of the Due d'Orleans. Literature, however, lured from the drudgery of a clerical calling, and fame came to him in 1829, when he published "Henri Trois et sa Cour." He was a most prodigious worker, and his output during the ten years between 1844 and 1854 is without parallel in literature except, perhaps, the wonderful first decade of the author of "Waverley." "La Tulipe Noire," which is translated in the following pages, was published in 1850. In spite of the vast wealth which his literary labours brought him, Dumas's career ended in poverty. He left Paris for the last time with only two napoleons in his possession. Retiring to his son's villa at Dieppe, he died there on 5th December 1870. The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas Pdf

'To have discovered the black tulip, to have seen it for a moment...then to lose it, to lose it forever!' Cornelius von Baerle, a respectable tulip-grower, lives only to cultivate the elusive black tulip and win a magnificent prize for its creation. But after his powerful godfather is assassinated, the unwitting Cornelius becomes caught up in deadly political intrigue and is falsely accused of high treason by a bitter rival. Condemned to life imprisonment, his only comfort is Rosa, the jailer's beautiful daughter, and together they concoct a plan to grow the black tulip in secret. Dumas' last major historical novel is a tale of romantic love, jealousy and obsession, interweaving historical events surrounding the brutal murders of two Dutch statesman in 1672 with the phenomenon of tulipomania that gripped seventeenth-century Holland.

THE BLACK TULIP (Historical Novel) by Alexandre Dumas Pdf

The story begins with the 1672 lynching of the Dutch Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis by a wild mob of their own countrymen, considered by many as one of the most painful episodes in Dutch history, described by Dumas with a dramatic intensity. The city of Haarlem, Netherlands, has set a prize of ƒ100, 000 to the person who can grow a black tulip, sparking competition between the country's best gardeners to win the money, honor and fame. Only the city's oldest citizens remember the Tulip Mania thirty years prior, and the citizens throw themselves into the competition. The young and bourgeois Cornelius van Baerle has almost succeeded but is suddenly thrown into the Loevestein prison… Alexandre Dumas, père (1802-1870) was a French writer whose works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His most famous works are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas Pdf

The Black Tulip By Alexandre Dumas Classic Novels The story begins with a historical event — the 1672 lynching of the Dutch Grand Pensionary (roughly equivalent to a modern Prime Minister) Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis, by a wild mob of their own countrymen — considered by many as one of the most painful episodes in Dutch history, described by Dumas with a dramatic intensity. The main plot line, involving fictional characters, takes place in the following eighteen months; only gradually does the reader understand its connection with the killing of the de Witt brothers. The city of Haarlem, Netherlands, has set a prize of ƒ100,000 to the person who can grow a black tulip, sparking competition between the country's best gardeners to win the money, honour and fame. Only the city's oldest citizens remember the Tulip Mania thirty years prior, and the citizens throw themselves into the competition. The young and bourgeois Cornelius van Baerle has almost succeeded but is suddenly thrown into the Loevestein prison. There he meets the prison guard's beautiful daughter Rosa, who will be his comfort and help, and eventually become his rescuer. The novel was originally published in three volumes in 1850 as La Tulipe Noire by Baudry (Paris).

It is a passionate tale of love? Or should we call it a historical story? The classic novel The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas is, in my opinion, a unique and gripping blend of these genres. Written in 1850, it is a political, drama and romance, focusing on the main characters of Cornelis van Barlae and Rosa. The atmospheric setting of the novel is political chaos times in the Netherlands in the 17th century. In the beginning of the novel, Cornelis' godfather Cornelis de Witt and his brother Johan de Witt who were prime minister of the Netherlands, killed by furious people because of misunderstanding. At the same time, Haarlem Tulip Grower Association make an offer magnificent money prize who can grow the black tulip.
