The Blessed Virgin Mary in Early Christian Latin Poetry (Classic Reprint) by Andrew B. Heider Pdf

Excerpt from The Blessed Virgin Mary in Early Christian Latin Poetry The existing works bearing on the subject of the present dissertation are not. Numerous. Besides the collections already mentioned, the works of Livius and Lehner render excellent service, as also the History of Christian Latin Poetry by Manitius and the general Histories of Latin Literature by Schanz and Ebert, by the analysis and appreciation of works that they furnish. The hymns that are treated can be found in the volumes of Daniel, Mone and Wackernagel, which have, however, been practically superseded by the Analecta vnica. All the works just mentioned are indicated in the general bibliography appended, with others that have been found use ful. Works to which only a single or unimportant reference has been made will be noted at the respective places. The Path of Christianity by John Anthony McGuckin Pdf

John Anthony McGuckin, one of the world's leading scholars of ancient Christianity, has synthesized a lifetime of work to produce the most comprehensive and accessible history of the Christian movement during its first thousand years. The Path of Christianity takes readers on a journey from the period immediately after the composition of the Gospels, through the building of the earliest Christian structures in polity and doctrine, to the dawning of the medieval Christian establishment. McGuckin explores Eastern and Western developments simultaneously, covering grand intellectual movements and local affairs in both epic scope and fine detail. The Path of Christianity is divided into two parts of twelve chapters each. Part one treats the first millennium of Christianity in linear sequence, from the second to the eleventh centuries. In addition to covering key theologians and conciliar decisions, McGuckin surveys topics like Christian persecution, early monasticism, the global scope of ancient Christianity, and the formation of Christian liturgy. Part two examines key themes and ideas, including biblical interpretation, war and violence, hymnography, the role of women, attitudes to wealth, and early Christian views about slavery and sexuality. McGuckin gives the reader a sense of the real condition of early Christian life, not simply what the literate few had to say. Written for student and scholar alike, The Path of Christianity is a lively, readable, and masterful account of ancient Christian history, destined to be the standard for years to come.

Carmina Mariana by Orby Shipley Pdf

Excerpt from Carmina Mariana: An English Anthology in Verse in Honour of or in Relation to the Blessed Virgin Mary 'And the Virgin's name was Mary.' Let us speak a few words upon this name, which signifieth 'Star of the Sea, ' and suiteth very well the Maiden-Mother, who may meetly be likened unto a star. A star giveth forth her rays without any harm to herself; and the Virgin brought forth her Son without any hurt to her virginity... O thou, whosoever thou art, that knowest thyself to be here not so much walking upon firm ground as battered to and fro by the gales and storms of this life's ocean, if thou wouldest not be overwhelmed by the tempest, keep thine eyes fixed upon this Star's clear shining... In danger, in difficulty, or in doubt, think on Mary, call on Mary... If thou follow her, thou wilt never go astray. If thou pray to her, thou wilt never have need to despair. If thou keep her in mind, thou wilt never wander. If she hold thee, thou wilt never fall. If she lead thee, thou wilt never be weary. If she help thee, thou wilt reach home safe at the last: and so, thou wilt prove in thyself how meetly it is said, 'And the Virgin's name was Mary.' History of the Devotion by Xavier Donald MacLeod Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Devotion: To the Blessed Virgin Mary in North America Catholic Literature in this country is not yet rich in works of a historical character; and though not a few have appeared evincing great research, and worthy of a high place, there was still wanting a popular element which genius alone could supply by lending its charm to the often dry details of the historian. The devotion to the Blessed Virgin in this country, from its settlement to the present day, was a theme which had been briefly touched upon by one or two writers. Still, it was a field which the late lamented author of the following pages entered with all the zeal and devotion of his ardent and impassioned character, and as a necessary consequence he gave his work the stamp of his peculiar genius. Few more gifted writers have appeared among us than Xavier Donald Macleod; and in undertaking his work, material was contributed by his numerous friends. The writer of this, one who had enjoyed that friendship from boyhood, rejoicing to see him about to take up a subject so worthy of his talents, furnished him an abundant material which he had collected, and feels now, perhaps, too great pleasure in his privilege in having contributed to so noble a work as that here presented to the Catholic public. The Genres of Late Antique Christian Poetry by Fotini Hadjittofi,Anna Lefteratou Pdf

Classicizing Christian poetry has largely been neglected by literary scholars, but has recently been receiving growing attention, especially the poetry written in Latin. One of the objectives of this volume is to redress the balance by allowing more space to discussions of Greek Christian poetry. The contributions collected here ask how Christian poets engage with (and are conscious of) the double reliance of their poetry on two separate systems: on the one hand, the classical poetic models and, on the other, the various genres and sub-genres of Christian prose. Keeping in mind the different settings of the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West, the contributions seek to understand the impact of historical setting on genre, the influence of the paideia shared by authors and audiences, and the continued relevance of traditional categories of literary genre. While our immediate focus is genre, most of the contributions also engage with the ideological ramifications of the transposition of Christian themes into classicizing literature. This volume offers important and original case studies on the reception and appropriation of the classical past and its literary forms by Christian poetry.
