Renewing Tradition by Mark W. Hamilton,Thomas H. Olbricht,Jeffrey Peterson Pdf

"We offer this collection as a token of our affection and admiration of our friend and colleague James Weldon Thompson. . . . His studies of the letter to the Hebrews and of Paul in their intellectual contexts (especially Middle Platonism) have contributed significantly to the ongoing quest for placing the New Testament in its socio-intellectual setting. Although his publications in this area date back more than thirty years, his best work is occurring now, and we may anticipate path-breaking contributions ahead. His more recent work on preaching and pastoral care in Paul both situate the Apostle in his own world and, just as importantly, offer correctives of some contemporary ministerial practices and invitations for improvements. Since 1993 Thompson has served as the editor of Restoration Quarterly, a significant venue for research in biblical studies, church history (especially of the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement), and contemporary theology. His more popular works make available to a lay audience thoughtful, well-informed, and spiritually rewarding interpretations of much of the New Testament. "His achievements, however, do not end at the printing press. For more than thirty years, he has taught ministers and others at the Institute for Christian Studies (now Austin Graduate School of Theology) and Abilene Christian University. Students of the past and the present speak of him as a prepared, stimulating, and creative teacher unafraid of experimentation for a new generation of learners. At both institutions he also served as an administrator, first as President of ICS and then as Associate Dean of ACU's Graduate School of Theology. His colleagues respect his ability to enlist them for work as needed and otherwise to get out of their way, certainly a too rare set of skills in university administrators!" --from the Preface

Luke the Theologian by François Bovon Pdf

In this completely revised and updated edition, François Bovon provides a critical assessment of the last fifty-five years of scholarship on Luke-Acts. The study divides thematically, with individual chapters covering the subjects of history and eschatology, the role of the Old Testament, Christology, the Holy Spirit, conversion, and the church. Each chapter begins with a consideration of the exegetical and theological problems unique to each theme in Luke-Acts before providing a detailed survey and critique of contemporary English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian New Testament scholarship.

Alexander Campbell: a Collection by Alexander Campbell,Bradley Cobb Pdf

This brand-new collection opens with a brief biography about Campbell, and from there on out, it's all him. We have chosen some of his most influential writings here, including his best-known sermon dealing with the Law of Moses, his brilliant destruction of the "annihilation" doctrine, his taking the government to task over capital punishment, and his own translation of the book of Acts.Alexander Campbell did not start the church. He did not start any church. His entire life was dedicated to simply serving Christ in Jesus' church, and helping that church to come back to the biblical standard. It would be wonderful if we had more men like him in the church today.Extra care had been given in correcting any typographical errors, as well as adding footnotes to explain any unfamiliar words and phrases. In all, well over a hundred hours of work has gone into the production of this collection, with the goal of making it as reader-friendly as possible!Contents include:* Alexander Campbell: Matchless Defender of the Protestant Faith. * Sermon on the Law * Life and Death * Instrumental Music in Worship * Is Capital Punishment Sanctioned by Divine Authority? * Confession Unto Salvation * The Bible * God has Spoken to Man in the Bible * Principles of Interpretation * Musings on a Christmas Morning * Acts of the Apostles (translation)

A Life of Alexander Campbell by Douglas A. Foster Pdf

The first critical biography of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Stone-Campbell Movement A Life of Alexander Campbell examines the core identity of a gifted and determined reformer to whom millions of Christians around the globe today owe much of their identity—whether they know it or not. Douglas Foster assesses principal parts of Campbell’s life and thought to discover his significance for American Christianity and the worldwide movement that emerged from his work. He examines Campbell’s formation in Ireland, his creation and execution of a reform of Christianity beginning in America, and his despair at the destruction of his vision by the American Civil War. A Life of Alexander Campbell shows why this important but sometimes misunderstood and neglected figure belongs at the heart of the American religious story.

Analysis of the 12 Propositions of Alexander Campbell by John Gidley Pdf

Does Acts 2:38 mean forgiveness of sins by repentance connected to water baptism, or was the ceremony of baptism merely in reference to the forgiveness of sins that Christ procured for us on the cross 50 days earlier? What did Peter mean using the language of his day? Which interpretation is correct and how can we honestly know?Several dozen American born and bred protestant denominations can trace their origins to the early Restoration Movement started by Alexander Campbell, Walter Scott along with a few other 'restorers''. Sometime after the Revolutionary War, American Christianity was being subdivided into many differing groups hoping to find simple, biblical, core orthodoxy. One of these groups, The Disciples of Christ, got their beginnings clear back in the 1820s. By the time of the Civil War, this nondenominational movement had over 200,000 members and to this day the many Campbellite denomination boast thousands of congregations with millions of members. In many of these Campbellite groups, the sacrament of water baptism is elevated to a place of expediency. I disagree with Alexander's premise that baptism is 'in order to' the forgiveness of sins, the 'act' as he refers to it that is necessary to change one's state from unforgiven to forgiven, and I explain why he was wrong with this simple to read analysis of his 12 propositions. But why analyze these 12 propositions and not other arguments in defense of salvation through the act of water baptism? Why this polemic? It is because, though other evangelical groups formulated this interpretation, it was not defended until Alexander Campbell wrote his book, The Christian System. All of the Campbellite groups, whether they realize it or not, receive this perspective precisely and squarely from Mr. Campbell's 12 propositions and not from Scripture, and his personal perspective has been handed down from generation to generation without thought or debate. They need to ask themselves, why are we the only ones that seems to interpret Acts 2:38 the way we do and no one else except for the Roman Catholic Church? Why? It all began with Alexander Campbell's 12 proposition. This is a historical fact. So, I go to the source to see if there is any truth to such an idea. I have discovered that Mr. Campbell used his own sense of reasoning and not the teachings of Christ or the Apostles to develop his proposition. I employed simple hermeneutics to discern where he failed in his proposal; 1. The teachings of Jesus as they are worded without any disclaimers or theological bias/interpretations attached to them to determine the truth of Campbell's views. In other words, does Mr. Campbell say what Jesus says? And, 2. The idea that all the ideas in the Bible come from the words in the Bible. In other words, can we find Mr. Campbell's words recorded in Scripture, can we trace them to a book, chapter, and verse? I also discovered from this study his endless use of eisegesis, context collapsing, creative etymology, and just plain sloppy theological deduction. We create sound doctrine on what the Bible says, not on what it does not say. We do not and cannot build sound doctrine on hypothetics, speculative hunches, or theoretical evaluations. Core orthodoxy contains that lexis of salvific theological truths and must be understood and defended. This comes from God's word, not man's. My analysis will demonstrate that Alexander Campbell's 12 propositions fails to defend or support New Testament baptism as recorded in Scripture. The reader will have to make certain choices concerning the actual truth behind Acts 2:38 and its proper interpretation including the other texts that refer to being born again and those texts that contain the word, 'water'. The major challenge for the reader will be to determine, 'do I trust Jesus to be the promise maker and keeper, or do I reject his teachings and promises replacing them with Mr. Campbell's invention of means and states.
