The Book of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by George Adam Smith Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2 That is the plan of the chapter - a Trial at Law. Though it disappears under the exceeding weight of thought the prophet builds upon it, do not let us pass hurriedly from it, as if it were only a scaffolding. That God should argue at all is the magnificent truth on which our attention must fasten, before we inquire what the argument is about. God reasons with man - that is the first article of religion according to Isaiah. Revelation is not magical, but rational and moral. Religion is reasonable intercourse between one intelligent Being and another. God works upon man first through conscience. The Book of Isaiah by George Livingston Robinson Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Isaiah: In Fifteen Studies Few books of the Old Testament have in modern times received the attention which has been accorded the book of Isaiah. An unusual flood of critical and expository literature has recently appeared, to which no careful student of the book would deny his very great indebted ness. Yet it must he confessed that the divisive criticism of Isaiah has developed into a sort of reckless surgery, until it has become well-nigh impossible to find a proof text in support of a reasonably conservative position, whose genuineness is not disputed by some one. It almost seems sometimes that doubt were in competition with doubt. As Whitehouse remarks in opposition to Lagarde, Duhm and Marti, who dissect Isa. As Edom is thus eliminated in one clause, it is necessary to operate on Bozrah in the other. (new Century Bible, Isaiah, vol: II., p. 303, II. The same is true of hosts of other passages. Excerpt from The Prophecies of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Translation With Commentary and Appendices The prospects of Old Testament study in England are more hopeful now than when I first began to write. Free and reverent investigation is at least sincerely tolerated, though within my own range of observation it has not received much countenance. A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2 by George Buchanan Gray Pdf

Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Isaiah, Vol. 1 of 2: I-XXXIX This Commentary should have been written by another; and all who are in any way familiar with the work of the late Dr. A. B. Davidson, and conscious of the profound sympathy and penetrating insight that he always brought to the interpretation of Scripture, must regret that he had made no substantial progress with the Commentary, which the editors of this series had entrusted to him, at the time when Christian scholarship and Christian life were left the poorer by his death. After Dr. Davidson's death, the editors, with a view to the speedier completion of this series, decided to make the Commentary on Isaiah the work of two writers; and at their request I undertook the preparation of the Commentary on chs. 1-39. For the present volume I am, then, entirely responsible; and, owing to the unequal size of the two main parts of the Book of Isaiah, the conclusion of my work must be held over for the second volume, which will also contain Dr. Peake's Commentary on chs. 40-66, completing the work. For the general Introduction to the entire book I am also solely responsible, though Dr. Peake, who has read it, is in general agreement with it, and in particular with such references as it contains to chs. 40-66. The more special Introduction to those chapters will be written by him, and appear in vol. ii. The second volume will also contain full Indexes to the whole work. Isaiah by Ulrich Berges Pdf

In this lucid study, Berges interprets the scroll of Isaiah as a 'literal cathedral', written by many hands and empowered by the experience of sorrow and disaster, liberation and joy. Methodologically, the book combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives and paves the way to a fruitful conversation between them. The vast reception history of the Book of Isaiah in the Septuagint, the New Testament, and in rabbinic and Christian traditions, as well as in painting and music, is also illustrated by some of the most illuminating examples.

We observe further that the appeal is now addressed to individual Israelites rather than to the nation as a whole, as if the great hindrance to the emancipation of Israel was no longer political, but lay in the selfishness and timidity of the mass of the people (1: Only a few writers2 have thought that these differences amount to a proof of dual authorship. How far they are to be explained by a change of situation is a question which must be deferred till we have examined the possibilities that lie in the historical background of the prophecies (p. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah (Classic Reprint) by John Skinner Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Isaiah The present General Editor for theoold Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of Opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Excerpt from The Book of the Prophecies of Isaiah The bible for home and school is intended to place the results of the best modern biblical scholarship at the disposal of the general reader. It does not seek to dupli cate other commentaries to which the student must turn. Its chief characteristics are (a) its rigid exclusion of all processes, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (5) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (6) its running analysis both in text and comment; (a') its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (c) its thorough but brief Introductions; (f) its use of the Revised Version Of 1881, supplemented with all important renderings in other versions.
