The Book of Parliament (Classic Reprint) by Michael Macdonagh Pdf

Excerpt from The Book of Parliament I have made some excursions into the domain of history. That, of course, was inevitable in writing about Parliament, whose roots lie so deep in the mighty past. But I have avoided as much as possible the broad beaten tracks of history; and have turned down unfrequented and little-trodden byways in search of fresh and apt anecdotes to enliven and illustrate and confirm my descriptions of the present work-a-day aspects of Parlia ment. My chief purpose has been to make the book entertaining and instructive to the general reader - to the millions of men and women of all sorts and condi tions in this world-wide Empire of which Parliament is the supreme ruler. But I trust the book will also be found useful to members of Parliament, lawyers, journalists, students of Constitutional history - to all. Twenty Years in Parliament (Classic Reprint) by W. McCullagh Torrens Pdf

Excerpt from Twenty Years in Parliament Of seven contested elections for Parliament, I was fortunate enough to lose but one. The first was for a seaport town in Ireland, having a constituency of but 250, who were so equally divided that my opponent claimed a preponderance of three only at the poll. On petition, I challenged his eligibility on the ground that he had been born and bred in Maryland, and had not obtained letters of naturalization. Parliament by Michael Macdonagh Pdf

Excerpt from Parliament: Its Romance, Its Comedy, Its Pathos IN The Book of Parliament, published in 1897, I have endeavoured to describe the two Houses of Parliament engaged in the work of law-making, dwelling particularly on the human element of the operation. In this volume I deal With phases of Parliament - still keeping to its human, rather than to its historical, side - which have hitherto not been noticed in books on the Constitution. A Short History of Parliament (Classic Reprint) by Britiffe Constable Skottowe Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Parliament The idea of writing a short history of Parliament was first suggested to me by Mr. F. S. Pulling, of Exeter, who at one time I thought would have shared in the work. Circumstances, however, prevented this, and the book ultimately assumed a somewhat different form from that projected at first. The object with which it was written was the hope of imparting a certain amount of life to the dry bones which are strewn in the way of the constitutional student, and of combining instruction with a certain amount of amusement. Whether the effort has been successful or not the reader must judge for himself. I must here take the opportunity to render my acknowledgments to Mr. F. York Powell, Mr. C. H. Carmichael, and Mr. A. B. Beaven for the kind assistance which they have rendered me - especially the latter, who undertook the laborious task of revising the whole of the MS. dealing with the period after 1660. I am indebted to the kindness of Sir George Sitwell for a very early illustration of parliamentary corruption - an isolated evidence but sufficiently pregnant of meaning. Getting Into Parliament and After (Classic Reprint) by George William Ross Pdf

Excerpt from Getting Into Parliament and After This book was written during the Parliamentary recess of 1911, but owing to the writer's illness its publication was unavoidably delayed. Chapters XVI and XXI have been added, but no substantial change has been made in the original text of the other chapters. My readers will kindly observe that I have not followed the course of party politics in the House of Commons beyond my retirement in 1883, except so far as was necessary to complete a character sketch of the leaders on the stage at that time, or of their probable successors. My refer ences to Provincial politics, for obvious reasons, close with the change of Government in 1905. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Evolution of Parliament (Classic Reprint) by A. F. Pollard Pdf

Excerpt from The Evolution of Parliament This volume is the outcome of studies which were turned in the direction of constitutional history partly by my appointment to a chair with that title at University College, London, in 1903, and more specifically by my election in 1908 to a fellowship at All Soul's College, Oxford, on condition of pursuing researches suggested by the late F.W. Maitland. The first sketch of this essay took the form of six public lectures delivered in London in Lent Term 1913, which were expanded into fifteen lectures given on the Goldwin Smith foundation at Cornell University and elsewhere in the United States in the following spring. The manuscript was completed, save for some notes and references, in August 1915, when the increasing tension of the war put a stop to remoter studies. During these seventeen years the history of the English parliament has attracted the labour of several learned historians, and particular acknowledgement is due to Professor C.H. Mcllwain's High Court of Parliament, which, coming into my hands at the end of 1912, confirmed the trend of my investigations and supplied me with fresh ideas and illustrations. Another American book. Professor Baldwins King's Council in the Middle Ages, published in 1914, threw valuable light on a collateral subject. Short History of Parliament, 1295-1642 (Classic Reprint) by Faith Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from Short History of Parliament, 1295-1642 This little book is not a history of parliament in the usual sense. No attempt is made to discuss obscure points of origins nor to do justice to certain thorny questions upon which reputable historians still disagree. It does include the main facts to be found in standard constitutional texts, and some of the more technical data, figures, and dates are supplied in notes and appendices for those who want them. It is addressed to students of college age, and may serve as collateral reading for college courses in English history or literature. It is hoped that it may also have some value for a wider reading public, including those interested in parliamentary government wherever it may be found in the world today. The purpose is fivefold: (1) to make available the valuable results of recent research scattered through learned monographs, essays, and review articles; (2) to give something of the flavor and points of view of the eras concerned by some quotation from the contemporary sources; (3) to bridge the division, usually too sharply made, between "medieval" and "modern"; (4) to bring the "men of law" into the picture - the legal historian who illuminates the subject by a special approach and the man of law in parliament who made many a practical as well as theoretical contribution; (5) last but not least, to bring parliaments - even those of "medieval" times - and their members to life, to dramatize, as it were, their personnel and activities. Pulpit, Platform and Parliament (Classic Reprint) by C. Silvester Horne Pdf

Excerpt from Pulpit, Platform and Parliament Ten busy years in many fields of activity are not, perhaps, sufficient justification for so personal a book as this. But when I began to write down some of the events that have interested me most, and to share with others some of the responsibilities that have burdened me, there seemed to be no escape from the personal pronoun. May I ask you to believe that it has been with no desire to obtrude my own personality, but because the case I was anxious to present could not well be put in any other way? As the book passes out of my hands I am acutely conscious that it gathers up only a few fragments of'ten.
