The Foot and Its Covering by James Dowie Pdf

Excerpt from The Foot and Its Covering: Comprising a Full Dr. Camper's Work on "the Best Form of Shoe" Having myself received much benefit from study ing the anatomical specimens in the Surgeons' Hall, it occurred to me that a visit of my men to that place would put things right. Accordingly, I procured tickets of admission for them, and the result was a complete revolution in the men's minds some who had hastily left my work regretting it afterwards. It was not the amount of information my men received by a single visit to the Surgeons' Hall that produced the favourable change in their minds, but the stimulus which that visit gave to the investiga tion of their own feet, and the nature of the covering the human foot required. Although they had been daily employed in making boots and shoes, their attention had never before been turned to the difier ence that existed between the lasts upon which boots and shoes were made, and the feet upon which they were to be worn. They were familiar with the former, went to the Surgeons' Hall to make them selves acquainted with the internal structure of the latter, and returned to their work with minds divested of former prejudices, and thus much the wiser to begin the world again. The Care of the Foot by William A. Woodbury Pdf

Excerpt from The Care of the Foot: A Practical Text-Book on Chiropody and General Care of the Foot, for Professional and Private Use Style and Comfort are not necessarily synonymous terms, but it is safe to state that a very great deal of the discomfort caused by shoes is not the fault of the style. Many young persons and some not so young find it hard to accept a shoe quite long or wide enough. While many older persons who have realized the folly of their earlier notions, make the less painful and seri ous mistake of selecting shoes that are unnecessarily large. It is the business of this little book to show in a simple, practical manner how the more common ail ments of the foot may be overcome. In New York State a Regent's license is necessary to become a prae ticing chiropodist, so that a working knowledge of the care of the feet is no mean accomplishment for anybody. Just what would happen if the feet were left free and unhampered we do not know. Adam and Eve are pictured with bare feet, but almost every bit of knowledge we have of man shows him with some sort of foot protection - and apparently this is the result of well defined necessity. And not all style, for do we not shoe horses and other animals when pressed into regular daily service? The shoes that are made now here in America are probably more nearly than ever before adapted to the shape of the foot and the use that is expected of both the shoe and the foot. The Way Under Our Feet by GRAHAM B. USHER Pdf

Walking is one of the simplest things we do as humans. It’s how most of us experience life. In The Way Under Our Feet, Graham Usher conveys how exhilarating it is to walk into the depths of our humanity. We become more ready to recognize the needs as well as the joys of others; we sift our thoughts; we seek to heal our battered world, even as we glory in the beauty of nature; we find ourselves companying with our three mile an hour God. ‘This is a lovely book, full of light, grace and meaning. Usher celebrates his passion for walking by exploring religious texts and stories, but this by no means confines his thoughts. We are drawn by secular texts, too: Macfarlane sits alongside Kierkegaard; Thoreau and Walden alongside T. S. Eliot. Through them all, we learn why walking is so unspeakably good for heart, soul and body.’ DAME FIONA REYNOLDS, MASTER OF EMMANUEL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, AUTHOR OF THE FIGHT FOR BEAUTY ‘Wonderful. Offers highly original and striking observations combined with apposite, moving and often humorous personal anecdotes. A classic, catching a genuine and humble holiness.’ BISHOP DAVID WILBOURNE
