The Breakdown of Minimum Wage and A Memorandum on Unemployment by Andrew Ackworth Mitchell Pdf

This timely book explores the impact of minimum wage laws on unemployment and the broader economy. The author presents a compelling argument that minimum wage laws are counterproductive and lead to higher unemployment and reduced economic growth. The Breakdown of Minimum Wage and a Memorandum on Unemployment by Andrew A. Mitchell Pdf

Excerpt from The Breakdown of Minimum Wage and a Memorandum on Unemployment Of the following papers, The Breakdown of Minimum Wage was read before the Economic Science Section of the British Association at the Edinburgh Meeting in September 1921. Time did not permit of much discussion. One eminent economist said that the doctrine of competition wage was "Counterrevolutionary." I have said what I have to say on that point in an article, The Influence of Trade Unions on Wages, in the Edinburgh Review for July 1913, and I have never yet been able to make out what the answer is. But competition wage, whether right or wrong, is not, I think, involved in the present paper. In the present paper it is argued that production cannot be carried on at a loss, but how profits, where there are any profits, are to be shared between employer and employed is left quite open. Another eminent economist, in private conversation, demurred to my criticism of economists for their silence and pointed me to his own published works. I do not deny that many economists have published what I consider sound views, especially in their more recondite works. But I still think there has been an undue reticence. The doctrine of minimum wage goes to the root of things, and I think economists are bound, if they cannot justify it, to disavow it to the public. The Memorandum on Unemployment is an attempt to bring matters to a practical issue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Memos to the President by Charles Schultze Pdf

When policymakers are in need of economic advice, professional economists are never far away. Policymakers, journalists, and citizens all rely on experts to explain various economic developments and policy proposals. While it is fortunate that experts are close at hand, those concerned with choosing or evaluating economic policies should themselves have an understanding of how the economy works. Unfortunately, many policymakers and interested citizens currently lack such knowledge; and they need to know at the least the basics of macroeconomics to make informed decisions on their own. In this insightful book, Charles L. Schultze employs an imaginative format for explaining to busy policymakers and citizens how the economy works and what issues are likely to affect macroeconomic policy. He imagines that the next president has promised to devote one hour a week to learning about key economic principles and has asked the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers for instruction. The book is written as a series of memos to the president on the principles and policy issues that should be understood before making macroeconomic policy judgements. A former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers himself, Schultze clearly explains the key relationships as a background for policy decisions—relationships among domestic and foreign economic forces, and government policies and economic outcomes. The memos rely heavily on the use of real-world examples from recent economic events and policy debates. They focus principally on such policy-related issues as inflation, unemployment, long-term economic growth, and the flow of international trade and capital. The series of short, easy-to-read memos is divided into three groups: the first presents the background, explaining why it is particularly important for policymakers to distinguish between those economic forces that affect total demand in the economy and those that affect total supply; the second addresses the problem of economic stability; and the third looks at long-term economic growth.

Modelling Welfare State Reform by G.M.M. Gelauff,J.J. Graafland Pdf

In order to analyze the economic effects of various policy proposals for reforming the welfare state a model has been developed called MIMIC. The structure of this model is presented in the first part of this book. The model combines various modern labour market theories with a detailed description of relevant labour market institutions in an applied general equilibrium context. The second part of the volume contains an elaborate presentation of the simulation results of MIMIC, such as various tax policies, a reduction in benefits or the official minimum wage, individualization of the tax and social security system and the introduction of negative income tax. The model has proved to be a unique instrument for policy evaluation for the Netherlands.

On the Mysteries of Unemployment contains four main sections. Part One provides an introductory chapter and general overview. Part Two contains rich contributions that provide new insights from an economic science perspective, while Part Three offers a balanced view from social scientists. The final section is devoted to the examination of policy issues concerning unemployment.
