Diversity and Evolution of Butterfly Wing Patterns by Toshio Sekimura,H. Frederik Nijhout Pdf

This book facilitates an integrative understanding of the development, genetics and evolution of butterfly wing patterns. To develop a deep and realistic understanding of the diversity and evolution of butterfly wing patterns, it is essential and necessary to approach the problem from various kinds of key research fields such as “evo-devo,” “eco-devo,” ”developmental genetics,” “ecology and adaptation,” “food plants,” and “theoretical modeling.” The past decade-and-a-half has seen a veritable revolution in our understanding of the development, genetics and evolution of butterfly wing patterns. In addition, studies of how environmental and climatic factors affect the expression of color patterns has led to increasingly deeper understanding of the pervasiveness and underlying mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity. In recognition of the great progress in research on the biology, an international meeting titled “Integrative Approach to Understanding the Diversity of Butterfly Wing Patterns (IABP-2016)” was held at Chubu University, Japan in August 2016. This book consists of selected contributions from the meeting. Authors include main active researchers of new findings of corresponding genes as well as world leaders in both experimental and theoretical approaches to wing color patterns. The book provides excellent case studies for graduate and undergraduate classes in evolution, genetics/genomics, developmental biology, ecology, biochemistry, and also theoretical biology, opening the door to a new era in the integrative approach to the analysis of biological problems. This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.

DEV & EVOL BUTTERFLY WING by NIJHOUT H FREDERIK Pdf

Butterfly wing color patterns may indicate sex or distastefulness, may mimic other organisms, may act as camouflage, or they may confuse predators. Most species may be identified by their color patterns alone. Furthermore, the dorsal and ventral patterns may be very different and each has evolved separately. These patterns are not random but are homologous units which can be identified in all species. The patterns are permutations of the nymphalid ground plan. This book describes the elucidation of these homologies based on comparative morphology, genetics, and theoretical modelling. The book is supplemented by line-drawings, diagrams, photographs, charts, tables, graphs, three appendices: "Classification and systematics of the Butterflies", "Higher Classification of the Nymphalidae", and a list of genera in the figures in chapter 2 ("Pattern Elements and Homologies"), a bibliography and an index.--BIOSIS.

Butterfly Wings - The Fun, Factual and Inspiring Life Cycle of the Butterfly by Lance Douglas Pdf

Few things in nature are more miraculous than the total transformation that takes place during the life cycle of a butterfly. Not only is the transformation fantastic, but the "LIFE LESSONS" that can be learned from this transformation are equally fantastic! Unfortunately many of the most basic facts about the butterfly life cycle are misunderstood and inaccurately taught. Follow the captivating and colorful butterfly life cycle from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis, to adult butterfly. But life is not always as simple as it may seem, as two little caterpillars soon discover. The two happy little caterpillars are enjoying a day of fun when they are confronted by butterflies from a neighboring tree who tease the little caterpillars for not having wings. Inspired and encouraged by their mother, the little caterpillars find hope and courage that one day they too will be as beautiful as their mother. In addition to a wonderful and captivating story, each beautifully illustrated page is loaded with amazing facts that will have you saying, "I never knew that!" For example: Did you know that the term "cocoon," when referring to a butterfly, is not correct? Do you know what the difference is between a cocoon and a chrysalis? Did you know that the chrysalis of a butterfly, often incorrectly referred to as a cocoon, is not "spun" by the caterpillar? It's true! A butterfly does not come from a cocoon. Furthermore, a chrysalis is not spun by the caterpillar. Do you know the four stages of the butterfly life cycle? How does the transition between each of the four butterfly life cycle stages occur? Why does a caterpillar eat only leaves and plants, and yet when that same caterpillar becomes a butterfly it can sip only sweet nectar for sustenance? How far will a caterpillar travel in its lifetime? How long does a caterpillar remain a caterpillar? What does a caterpillar do when it gets thirsty? How long does an adult butterfly live? These, and many more amazing facts are taught alongside a wonderful and inspiring story. Written by top-selling Amazon's Choice author Lance Douglas, this informative, educational and uplifting book promises to be a favorite that you and your curious children will never forget. The result may be good or it may be bad - it all hinges on your choice... your decision. In the English language the word but is small. However, the change it can produce or the outcome it brings can at times be large, exciting, profitable, or destructive. Truly the trajectory on ones life can be forever altered. This is not only true for our day, it is also lived out many times in the Bible: But Noah found favor in the eyes of God. But Daniel purposed in his heart. But Jonah... But Judas... But God... Rising Strong by Brené Brown Pdf

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write the ending. Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart! Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome—is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. As a grounded theory researcher, Brown has listened as a range of people—from leaders in Fortune 500 companies and the military to artists, couples in long-term relationships, teachers, and parents—shared their stories of being brave, falling, and getting back up. She asked herself, What do these people with strong and loving relationships, leaders nurturing creativity, artists pushing innovation, and clergy walking with people through faith and mystery have in common? The answer was clear: They recognize the power of emotion and they’re not afraid to lean in to discomfort. Walking into our stories of hurt can feel dangerous. But the process of regaining our footing in the midst of struggle is where our courage is tested and our values are forged. Our stories of struggle can be big ones, like the loss of a job or the end of a relationship, or smaller ones, like a conflict with a friend or colleague. Regardless of magnitude or circumstance, the rising strong process is the same: We reckon with our emotions and get curious about what we’re feeling; we rumble with our stories until we get to a place of truth; and we live this process, every day, until it becomes a practice and creates nothing short of a revolution in our lives. Rising strong after a fall is how we cultivate wholeheartedness. It’s the process, Brown writes, that teaches us the most about who we are. ONE OF GREATER GOOD’S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR “[Brené Brown’s] research and work have given us a new vocabulary, a way to talk with each other about the ideas and feelings and fears we’ve all had but haven’t quite known how to articulate. . . . Brené empowers us each to be a little more courageous.”—The Huffington Post

National Geographic Readers: Great Migrations Butterflies by Laura Marsh Pdf

The monarch butterfly, one of the most seemingly delicate of all of nature’s animals, proves to be one of the toughest in this reader. Making the yearly trip from the Northern United States and Canada to the Oyamel forest of Mexico is no easy task, and it takes five generations of butterflies in order to do so. Battling cold temperatures and the threat of starvation, these beautiful insects complete an almost 3,000 mile journey over the course of two months, only to have to turn and around and head back home. Four Wings and a Prayer by Sue Halpern Pdf

Every autumn, the monarch butterflies east of the Rockies migrate from as far north as Canada to Mexico. Memory is not their guide — no one butterfly makes the round trip — but each year somehow find their way to the same fifty acres of forest on the high slopes of Mexico’s Neovolcanic Mountains, and then make the return trip in the spring. In Four Wings and a Prayer, Sue Halpern sets off on an adventure to delve into the secrets behind this extraordinary phenomenon. She visits scientists and butterfly lovers across the country, offering a keenly observed portrait of the monarchs’ migration and of the people for whom they have become a glorious obsession. Combining science, memoir, and travel writing, Four Wings and a Prayer is an absorbing travelogue and a fascinating meditation on a profound mystery of the natural world.
