It’s Real Ministry by I. Ross Bartlett,Kate Jones Pdf

Time to challenge your current thinking about ministry! Probe your assumptions about congregational well-being. Address your assumptions. Open the possibility of unleashing a significant new wave of Christian mission. Find new, fulfilling opportunities. In our time of specialization, it is of little wonder that we have left the trained and skilled professionals in charge of our churches and ministries. But did you know that full-time ministry is a relatively recent phenomenon? It’s Real Ministry: How Part-Time and Bi-Vocational Clergy Are Challenging and Empowering the Church reveals the richness that has existed and can exist again in part-time and bi-vocational ministry. It breathes hope and richness into what are often seen as depressed or impoverished communities of faith. And it offers insight into where congregations and clergy need to make choices and adaptations. Anchored in the findings of the largest survey of part-time, bi-vocational clergy that has been undertaken in a mainline Canadian denomination, It’s Real Ministry begins to address the current issue of declining congregational attendance, delves into the meaning that part-time and bi-vocational ministries might have for local communities of faith, and discusses new ways of imagining leadership. While the data is specific to the United Church of Canada, this study offers points of reflection for many denominations in Canada and beyond, offering positive insight and a starting point for clergy and laity to rethink of what they consider as age-old traditions.

The Path to Being a Pastor by Bobby Jamieson Pdf

A man who's been transformed by Christ and desires to preach the gospel might say he feels called to be a pastor. This personal conviction, while heartfelt, doesn't acknowledge important, challenging steps necessary to be a qualified leader. So where should full-time ministry begin? In The Path to Being a Pastor, Bobby Jamieson explains why it's better to emphasize "aspiration" over "calling" as men pursue the office of elder and encourages readers to make sure they are pastorally gifted before considering the role. He shares from his own eleven-year experience preparing to be a pastor by walking potential leaders through different stages of ministry training, from practical steps—such as cultivating godly ambition and leadership, observing healthy churches, and mastering Scripture—to personal advice on building a strong family and succeeding in seminary. Emphasizing the importance of prayer, godly counsel, and immersion in the local church, Jamieson encourages men to ask Am I qualified? instead of Am I called? when considering a life in ministry.

The Pastor in a Changing Society by Zawadi Job Kinyamagoha Pdf

This book examines how social change affects the role of the pastor in an African context. Through field study in African churches, author Zawadi Job Kinyamagoha explores how pastors work amid the tensions of rapid social change and suggests how pastors can constructively respond to social change by using it as an opportunity in their pastoral ministry. Contemporary society is characterized by three cultural spheres: the economic sphere, the public sphere, and the democratic or self-governance rule, the realities of which many pastors seem to overlook. Church authorities seem to adhere rigidly to strict principles and rules without accommodating the realities of society. Conversely, a changing society demands that pastors work with the reality at hand, leaving pastors caught between two conflicting tensions: the pressure from church authorities and from a changing social reality. The Pastor in a Changing Society seeks to help Tanzanian and African pastors rethink existing doctrines and practices in order to better respond to the reality of a changing society.

Parables of a 21st-Century Shepherd and Other Farm Stories by Dale Hetherington Pdf

In Genesis 46, Jacob calls God his shepherd as he blesses Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim. In the beloved Psalm 23, David sings about what it means that the Lord is his shepherd. In Isaiah 40, God promises to come to His people and tend to them like a shepherd. In John 10, Jesus says He is the Good Shepherd. In Hebrews 13, He is called the Great Shepherd. In 1 Peter 5, He is the Chief Shepherd. This is only a sample of places in the Bible where God’s relationship with His people is equated with that of a shepherd to His sheep. I became a pastor shortly after we started raising sheep, and I began seeing similarities between being a pastor and a shepherd. This makes sense since pastor comes from the Greek word poimen, which means shepherd. Jesus taught in parables, earthly stories with a spiritual meaning. That’s the idea behind this little book. I wrote stories about our dealings with our sheep that illustrate similarities I saw between my relationship with my sheep and my relationship with the people I shepherded in the church. I hope that these stories will entertain you and also give you insight as well. For pastors, maybe it will even help you in your ministry. Being aware of this has helped me in mine.

Pastor Served Al Dente by Edgar Stubbersfield Pdf

When Edgar Stubbersfield was a much younger man, he spoke with one of his state’s leading evangelists. The evangelist shocked Edgar that night when he said, "It is the easiest thing in the world to start a new church; the hardest thing is finding it a good pastor." Edgar is now certain that the evangelist overstated the simplicity of starting a church but, in his advancing age, Edgar feared at times that he understated the difficulty in getting it a good pastor. Yet, difficult as it may be, it is not impossible. The quest for the perfect pastor will be fruitless. But a good pastor? That is an entirely different matter; they do exist but may well be a threatened species. This book is intended to set a very high yet, with God’s help, still achievable bar for anyone considering Christian ministry. However, while it is a gentle reminder to the church about what a pastor should be, this book is also a gentle reminder to the pastor of what a member should be like!

THE BIOGRAPHY OF REVEREND EM HELTON: FROM MOUNTAINEER TO BAPTIST MINISTER 1944-2002 by E.L. Helton Pdf

Introduction As a child, I realized the great importance of my grandfather’s work in the ministry and enjoyed hours of listening to the stories of his youth and young adulthood that shaped the preacher who had such a strong impact on those who would hear him speak. I also benefited from visits where we heard stories of his youth and education. His life and work provides us with an example that any preacher of the bible could admire. In the process of writing this book, it has been a great joy to revisit the inspiring stories he tells and learn more about his life. Brother Helton is viewed by many as a great friend, extraordinary minister, admired brother, example, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. At the time of my writing this, Brother Helton’s preaching ministry has covered some sixty-three years, and continues. Brother Helton continues to be in demand for supply preaching, weddings, and revival meetings. The preparation of this biography offers an expression of my gratitude, love, and admiration for my grandfather. Throughout my life, I have had the pleasure of seeing the impact of his work on others as well as benefited from his example.
