The Canadian Congregational, Vol. 35 by E. D. Silox Pdf

Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational, Vol. 35: Year Book, 1907-1908 This volume contains a year's record of things attempted and things done. As these are perused one is led to exclaim, What hath God wrought. Not one of these reports is in the minor key, there is a clear; ringing note of hopefulness and Victory. Our harps are not hung on the willows, but are in our hands, and we strike them to the praise of Him who always causeth us to triumph in Christ. Our churches to-day are in a position to go forward as never before, most of them being free of debt and therefore free to serve. The Canadian Congregational Year Book, 1906-7, Vol. 34 by W. E. Gilroy Pdf

Excerpt from The Canadian Congregational Year Book, 1906-7, Vol. 34: Annual Volume In issuing our annual volume of reports and statistics once more, we rejoice that we are able to sound a note of optimism regarding Canadian Congregationalism. It would seem that for the last few years each succeeding year has been the best. The record that follows is a record of the attaining of freedom for many churches. Difficulties still confront us, and for those ready for discouragement, there are many things to discourage. We believe, however, that the outlook has not been so bright for years. It devolves upon us to be hopeful, self-reliant, and persistent. A new era is before us for Canadian Congrega tionalism if we will but arise and enter into our heritage, we must look forward to this as a year given over to the inspiring of faith in one another and in the Congregational Ideal. It is only thus that we can prepare ourselves for the mission God has given us to fulfil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. William Wye Smith by Scott A. McLean,Michael E. Vance Pdf

Many writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emphasized the virtues of early rural pioneers and life on the land as a general criticism of what they perceived to be the negative, alienating influence of Ontario’s rapid urban and industrial expansion. Such work often highlighted the difficulties the recent emigrant faced: the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters; however they in turn celebrated the progress demonstrated in the pioneer’s domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his Canadian Reminiscences, a hand-written compilation of anecdotes collected during his lifetime that relate to his experience as journalist, clergyman and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of Smith’s unpublished manuscript highlights Smith’s unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, as well as his position in literary history.

Light of Nature and the Law of God by Allen P. Stouffer Pdf

Allen Stouffer's analysis of Ontario's response to the freedmen reveals a virulent strain of racism that helps to explain why British North Americans were slow to join their British and American counterparts in the North Atlantic antislavery triangle. After exploring the Canadian churches' mixed reaction to antislavery, he applies cliometrics to draw a socio-economic profile of Canadian antislavery's leaders and followers. Employing British, American, and Canadian primary sources, Stouffer has written this study the first book-length examination of Canadian antislavery from a British North American perspective. Earlier studies concluded that Canadian anti-slavery was largely the result of Canada's proximity to the United States, a proximity which precluded Canada's ignoring the situation. While Stouffer recognizes the importance of the American influence, he shows that the leaders of Canadian anti-slavery were immigrants from Britain who had been deeply involved in antislavery in their homeland.
