The Canadian Horticulturist, 1913, Vol. 36 (Classic Reprint) by H. Bronson Cowan Pdf

Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, 1913, Vol. 36 From four acres of red raspberries last season I sold almost one thousand dollars' worth of fruit. The bushes were set out in the spring of 1910 in rows seven feet and nine feet apart alternately and twenty inches apart in the row. In a large patch this is an advantage when getting out the old wood, as -a team and wagon can be driven down the nine foot rows and have the brush thrown on from the seven foot rows. The bushes were hoed and cultivated the first summer and made a fine growth before fall. In August the bushes were cut back to two feet and in October the bushes were strong and the canes large and they Wintered well. In the spring of 1911 the ground was hoed and cultivated and kept clean all summer. In spite of the severe drought of that season we picked feur thousand eight hundred baskets from the patch. The old wood was removed as soon as the crop was off and the new canes cut back to about two and a half feet and not over four canes left in a hill, three was the average. Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, 1909, Vol. 32 In a short talk on grafting, Mr. Macoun said that the scion and stock when grafted constitute merely a mechanical union, not an organic one. Sometimes the top will outgrow the stock because not enough sap is supplied. The peculiarity of the stock always remains. There is individuality in trees as there is in animals. Each bud on the tree is really an individual. Top grafting increases fruitfulness. It may not increase the total amount but it Will make the scions earlier in fruiting. The Canadian Horticulturist, Vol. 2 by Fruits Growers' Association of Ontario Pdf

Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, Vol. 2: March, 1879 With regard to the Russian apples, Barry stated that none of them were as valuable and as high flavored as our well known American varieties. The lled Astracan, Duchess of Oldenburg and Alexander were among the best of them. Their value consisted in the hardiness of the trees, enabling them to endure the rigours of very cold climates, but they would not be grown where the higher flavored American sorts succeeded. The following varieties of plum were named as being valuable for planting for market, Reine Claude de Bavay, Lombard, Bradshaw, Coe's Golden Drop, Hudson River Purple Egg, Monroe Gage, and Shropshire Damson. Several very interesting papers were read, to which we hope to refer at some future time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
