The Case Against Free Trade (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Case Against Free Trade It is a commonplace of political study that the territorial expansion of the Empire was in the main a haphazard affair. British Governments, in spite of the perhaps not unnatural suspicions of foreign powers, have pursued no settled or reasoned policy of expansion. More often than not, when pro claiming an annexation or a protectorate, they have been the unwilling agents of forces stronger than themselves. Again and again they have surrendered what British soldiers have conquered again and again they have refused to take what British explorers have offered. But the genius of the race has brooked no denial, and in spite of definite refusals or reluctant acquiescence on the part of its rulers, the Empire has grown to be the vast accumulation of dominions and dependencies whose representatives are now assembled in London for the coronation of the Sovereign. Excerpt from The Case Against Protection The aim of the following pages is to classify and summarise the evidence submitted at the recent Inter national Free Trade Congress - with a view (i) to emphasising the completeness and extraordinary force of this many-sided indictment of Protectionist systems, and (2) to conveying a general impression, unburdened with details, of the results of the respective policies of Free Trade and Protection as actually practised in leading countries. Protection and Free Trade (Classic Reprint) by John Maclean Pdf

Excerpt from Protection and Free Trade The present circumstances of the new nationality, or Dominion of Canada, call for an early practical solution, in our own case, of the great question which, for want of any more accurate and generally accepted designation, is commonly alluded to as that between Protection and Free Trade. To place before the public some portions of the general argument in favour of encouraging Home Industry, also arguments having a special bearing with reference to these Provinces; and to expose a few prominent Free Trade fallacies, is the object of the present pamphlet. Free Trade Versus Fair Trade (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Henry Farrer Pdf

Excerpt from Free Trade Versus Fair Trade For the following pages I am alone responsible. They contain an attempt to illustrate established truths, and to expose exploded - though not obsolete fallacies; but they-trench so closely on the politics of the day that I should have scarcely felt justified in writing them for publication without the encourage ment of the President of the Board of Trade. Sophisms of Free-Trade and Popular Political Economy Examined (Classic Reprint) by John Barnard Byles Pdf

Excerpt from Sophisms of Free-Trade and Popular Political Economy Examined Whoever contemplates, on the one hand, the enormous powers of production in the United Kingdom, and on the other, the misery which nevertheless grinds down masses of the population, will necessarily conclude that the circumstances which ensure or promote the creation and due distribution of wealth, are yet unknown or mistaken. He will see the science which assumes to teach these things, discredited, helpless, and utterly at fault. There must be something fearfully wrong or essentially deficient in the prevailing system: there must necessarily be some error in theory. No adequate practical measures of relief can be devised till it is discovered. The following sheets are not written to aid a party, but a assist, if possible, in reaching the truth on a very complex and difficult subject. Protectionists will find no defence of a high price of subsistence, and free-traders no acquiescence in their recommendation of unlimited and indiscriminate imports. The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement (Classic Reprint) by William Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement His volume consists of the substance of a course which I gave in the Michaelmas Term of 1903; it was planned with the view of presenting to members of the University a dispassionate survey of the main issues involved in the present fiscal controversy. The lectures have been written out from notes which were taken at the time by my daughter, who has also helped me in supplying additional illustrations. Complaint was made by some of my audience that they could not tell which side I took. I fear I do not know for certain what my views might have been in 1783, or 1823 or 1846 I have never specu lated about pre-natal political affinities. As to the impending issue, the case is different. It hardly seems possible that any one, who has been influenced by the political ideas of Sir John Seeley and is true to the economic teaching of Adam Smith, should hesitate. I hope to march with the men who have wisdom to reconsider a decision, honesty to acknow ledge a blunder, and courage to try to retrieve it. The demand for a second edition has given me the opportunity of making a few trifling emendations. I have also added to the volume two lectures which have been already published in pamphlet form. The Real Ricka/rd Cobden was written out from my notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Insular Free Trade by Russell Rea Pdf

Excerpt from Insular Free Trade: Theory and Experience This pamphlet is a reprint of a lecture I delivered in Birmingham in 1905, considerably extended, with the few figures I made use of brought up to date. I have retained the original form so far as the use of the first person in matters relating to personal experience. I assume on the part of my readers a knowledge of the published records of international trade, and of the statistical case for Free Trade and Tariff Reform as presented to the country by their respective advocates. My object has been to bring into opposition the two theories of foreign trade - that of List and his followers and that of Adam Smith and Free Traders, with the fruits of their policies as practised by foreign nations and by ourselves respectively; and to add inductive proof or disproof from the experience of two generations, to abstract deductive argument. Letters on Free Trade and Protection (Classic Reprint) by Francis B. Nash Jr. Pdf

Excerpt from Letters on Free Trade and Protection In the following letters I have aimed to cover the main ground in the entire question of Protection versus Free Trade. In the place of treating one phase thereof, I have tried to touch on all the main points at issue between Reve nue Reformers and Protectionists. I have availed myself of others' work and others' facts in these pages, giving credit for same. It has been my design to be instructive rather than original; and my aim, to crowd all the evidence I could into a small space, and at the same time keep up the interest. With this much, by way of preface, we will plunge into the subject at once, and ask. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
