The Case of the Established Church of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by James Thomas O'brien Pdf

Excerpt from The Case of the Established Church of Ireland This makes a most important difference. I grant, that if the Ecclesiastical persons alone were concerned, it might be very reasonable to say, - These men have no right or title to the incomes which they enjoy beyond their own lives; and provided the same amount is secured to them for that time, they suffer no injury or injustice, if a different appropriation of their incomes is made, when they are taken away. But this is putting out of sight the important fact that they are not the Church, but a part, and a small part of it. Excerpt from A Primer of the History of the Holy Catholic Church in Ireland: From the Introduction of Christianity to the Formation of the Modern Irish Branch of the Church of Rome; Supplementary Volume Beyond this general apology or the present work, there are a few other matters more in the way of detail, concerning which some thing remains to be said here. Excerpt from The Ancient Irish Church Perhaps the greatest interest of all will be felt by those who, rejoicing in the liberty of a reformed faith and an emancipated Church, will see in Ireland the last of the Western Churches to acknowledge the supremacy of, the pope. When all other parts of Western Europe had already for centuries acknow ledged his sway, Ireland was still independent. The Church of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Olden Pdf

Excerpt from The Church of Ireland While these sheets were passing through the press the Church of Ireland suffered a grievous loss in the death of the learned and accomplished Dr. Reeves, Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore, who was without a rival in his acquaintance with the ecclesiastical literature of Ireland. Up to the last, notwithstanding his many engagements, he found time with his usual kindness to read the proofs of this work for me. The essay on S. Patrick (Appendix A.) had not then been reached by the printer, but before any part of the work went to the press I had sent this to the Bishop in manuscript. I felt doubtful as to how he would receive it, as it differs considerably from previous theories on the subject. I was, however, much gratified when he assured me of the pleasure with which he read the argument. I hope it will be found to throw some light on a difficult subject. The Bishop has been taken from us, in the Providence of God, when he could ill be spared, and I deeply regret that it is now not in my power to thank him for the help he so willingly gave me. Some Remarks on the State of the Established Church in Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Archibald Edmonstone Pdf

Excerpt from Some Remarks on the State of the Established Church in Ireland Into active co-operation with the bold' unscrupulous destructive. With improvement ever in its month, it is only active in pulling down; and claiming public spirit even to monopoly, its views are bounded by the narrowest limits of party, and its schemes coneen trate within the closest circle of self-interest. Against the spacious arts then of Liberalism, I would urge all to be 011 their guard. If you wish to preserve what you hold most precious - your civil and religious rights and privileges - you must make common cause against the common enemy. Wait not till you are attacked on your own ground, but show a jealousy of aggression from whatever quarter it may threaten. Public opinion can now press with re sistless weight on the legislature. Let this be felt for good as well as for evil, and enforce your determination to uphold the Church and State in their integrity by every method the Constitution allows. Your friends will thereby be encouraged, and your adversaries lose confidence, and you will maintain the cause with a fairer prospect of success. The issue is indeed in the hands ofa higher power than that of man, but we are not the less called upon to strenuous exertion; and if we cordially unite towards mutual protection, neither blinded by prejudices nor deceived by vain fallacies, I see no reason to fear but that 'that Providence, who has preserved us our present blessings through many dangers and difficulties, will continue them uninjured through succeeding generations. The Church in Ireland by Thomas Andrews Pdf

Excerpt from The Church in Ireland: A Second Chapter of Contemporary History Protestant Church, the Bishop of Oxford lately declared in the House of Lords, that St. Patrick was_ the son of one married clergyman, and the grandson of another. He ought in candour to have added, that the only authorities on the subject are wholly at variance. In the 'confession, ' St. Patrick describes himself as the son of a deacon, who was himself the son of a presbyter in the Epistle to Coroticus, ' he says that he is of gentle birth according to the esh, his father a decurion, and that, for the sake of others, he sold his nobility. The name of Patricius, as well as the popular legends, are favourable to the latter statement. I do not wish, at the same time, to attach any undue importance to either of these documents. A recent writer has attempted to alter the barbarous texts, so as to bring the language of the Confession' into agreement with that of the 'epistle but with little success. The opinion of the learned Ledwich, that there is'no evidence of such a person as St. Patrick having ever lived in Ireland, and that his history is one of the most contemptible of fictions, goes perhaps somewhat too far; although a recent writer in Germany has also pronounced the writings, ascribed to St. Patrick to be fictitious, and the accounts of his life fabulous. I am, at the same time, constrained to acknowledge, that the arguments adduced against the existence of the historical St. Patrick of the fifth century are most cogent, and have never been satisfactorily answered. The more, indeed, we attempt to obtain a distinct'view of the saint and his achievements, the farther they recede from our sight; and, 'in spite of the efforts of clerical and national admirers, the eventful life of St. Patrick must, it is to be feared, disappear sooner or later from the page of history, and his memory be enshrined, along with that of other heroes of the same order, among the grand, but shadowy, figures of a semi-legendary period. The Reformed Church of Ireland by John Thomas Ball Pdf

Excerpt from The Reformed Church of Ireland: 1537-1889 Of the Churches in which during the sixteenth century, either by legislative interference or their own voluntary action, the principles of the Reformation were introduced, none can claim attention more justly than the Church then established in Ireland. Its history has been traced to the time of the Union with accuracy and minuteness; but of subsequent events, although some (for instance, Disestablishment and the construction of a new Constitution) are of the highest importance, a narrative is yet wanting. The following pages are an attempt to supply this deficiency; they also aim at recalling what has been already discussed by others, but in a compressed form, and without details which no longer instruct or interest. Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland (Classic Reprint) by Wm M. Blackburn Pdf

Excerpt from Saint Patrick, and the Early Church of Ireland Was there ever such a man as Saint Patrick? It was wise to consider this question before attempting to write his life. By some it has been doubted, by a few others denied. But in such cases there has usually been a strong party feeling, or an ignorance of certain original sources of history. There is a distinction to be made between the myth and the man. Imagination has given us a Robinson Crusoe; the real man was Alexander Selkirk. The Saint Patrick of the ordinary Irish heart is certainly very mythical. The portrait of him was drawn from imagination; the colours are not those of the fifth, but those of the twelfth or fourteenth century. The deeds are manufactured to order and by the job, and the life is made of the baldest legends. This Patrick is a fully-developed Papist of the time, when certain errors pre vailed, which he could not have known in the fifth century. He is constantly working miracles, some of them very triļ¬‚ing, and some of them astounding, beyond all that was ever recorded of a mere man. For his especial benefit divine revelations are made to him, which cause a greater amazement than any ever made to Moses or Paul. He is too wonderful to be real. The myth business was entirely overdone. The manufacturers did not perceive that com mon sense might some time be restored to the human race. In the Middle Ages it was customary with the monks to exercise their scholars in writing the lives of imaginary saints; asserting that it was a pious and very improving way of exercising the imagination! L The best of these fanciful biographies were laid aside for future use; and after the lapse of a few ages, when their statements could not be disproved, were produced and published as genuine.
