The Catholic Church and Civil Governments: Or, the Church's Right by John Earnshaw Pdf

In this thought-provoking book, John Earnshaw defends the Catholic Church's rights in the face of encroaching civil governments. He argues that the Church is a moral authority that should not be subject to secular rulers, and that Church and state should operate as separate entities. A must-read for anyone interested in the relationship between religion and politics. The Rights of the People by Alonzo Trévier Jones Pdf

This work, first printed in 1895, showed the relationship that should exist between the church and the state at the present time, as proved by Holy Writ and the historical evidence of twenty-five centuries. About the Author Alonzo T Jones (1850-1923) heard the Adventist message while serving in the United States Army in the State of Washington. He participated in the hearings of the Blair Sunday bill in 1889 and became editor of "The American Sentinel." Elder Jones was a powerful speaker and one of the strong voices in the revival of 1888 within the Adventist denomination. For a short time he was a Bible teacher at Healdsburg College. From 1897-1901 he was the editor of the Review and Herald, and he served on the staff of the Signs of the Times. The Parish in Catholic Tradition by James A. Coriden Pdf

"This volume," says James Coriden in his introduction, "... allows the reader to reach an accurate understanding of the authentic nature and function of parishes within the Catholic tradition." It describes the origins of parishes and their historical evolution, offers a theology of parish as a local church, links parishes to the church's social teaching and provides a comprehensive overview of their function in Roman Catholic law and their relationship to American civil law." "In clear, nontechnical language, the volume outlines the canonical status of Catholics as parishioners - as well as their rights, duties and forms of assembly and the relationship of parishes to other ecclesial and civil bodies. Ministerial students, clerical and lay ministers, members of parish councils and laypersons generally will find this book an indispensable handbook for living and working within parish communities. Christians of other denominations will make fruitful connections between their own congregational life and Roman Catholic experience."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Churches and Urban Government in Detroit and New York, 1895-1994 by Henry J. Pratt Pdf

Beginning in the 1890s, the social gospel movement and its secular counterpart, the Progressive movement, set the stage for powerful church and city governance connections. What followed during the next 100 years was the emergence of religious bodies as an important instrument for influencing City Hall on moral and social issues. Churches and Urban Government compares the governing styles of Detroit and New York City from 1895 to 1994 and looks at the steps city-wide religious bodies took to advance the interests of their communities and their local government during this chaotic period in urban history. Detroit and New York City make for a very interesting case study when casting the two cities’ many similarities against their contrasting urban governance styles. What these cities share is a longstanding liberal political culture and comparable ethnic and racial diversity as well as large populations of Catholics and Protestants. Emphasizing the role of Black churches, Henry J. Pratt—with additional material from Ronald Brown—examines how immigration, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights movement all nurtured this developing link between religion and politics, helping churches evolve into leadership roles within these metropolitan centers.
