Excerpt from The Catholic University Bulletin, 1899, Vol. 5 Although the music of Night and Sleep is not depend ent upon the rhyme, it is plain, - as the form of poetry appeals to the ear, - that the rhyme is a gain; and yet one does not miss it in the fifth and seventh line of each stanza. The real musical charm of the poem, - only two stanzas, of four, are given here, - lies in the management of the rhythm. Welectic, almost all other kinds of verse being catalectic on at least one syllable, implying a final pause of corresponding. Duration. Mr. Patmore here shows that the rhyme in this lovely Night and Sleep is merely accessory, a lightly played accompaniment to a song that would be as beautiful a song without it, yet gaining a certain accent through this aecom paniment, and that the real questions in all verse are of rhythm and of time. Ten, nyson whose technique, even in the use of sibilants, will bear the closest scrutiny, often proves the merely accessory value of rhyme, but 1n no instance more fully than in Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean; Tears from the depth of some divine despair Rise in the heart and gather in the eyes, In looking on the happy autumn fields, And thinking of the days that are no more. He was the great, indeed, the only teacher, of Latin Christianity in its higher problems for eight hundred years. One duty only was essential - the saying or singing of mass daily for the soul of the donor or for the souls of the persons named by him. But in addition to this office, by the will of the founder, many chantry priests acted the part of curates, others assumed the office of school master or librarian, while a great number, located in cathedrals, collegiate houses and large parish churches, fol lowed the duties of the choir. And this last office, when rightly performed, was no light labor. It began at dawn with the solemn recitation of Matins and Lauds, followed, at short intervals, by Little Hours and High Mass. In this way most of the morning was taken up while part of the afternoon was occupied in the singing of vespers and complin. The Origins of Moral Theology in the United States by Charles E. Curran Pdf

Charles E. Curran presents the first in-depth analysis of the origins of Catholic moral theology in the United States, focusing on three significant figures in the late nineteenth century and demonstrating that methodological pluralism and theological diversity existed in the Church even then. Curran begins by tracing the historical development of moral theology, especially as presented in nineteenth-century manuals of moral theology, which offered a legal model of morality including a heavy emphasis on canon law. He then probes the different approaches and ideas of three important writers: Aloysius Sabetti, a Jesuit who was a typical, as well as the most influential, American manualist; Thomas J. Bouquillon, first chair of moral theology at Catholic University of America, a neoscholastic who criticized the manuals' approach as narrow and incomplete for failing to address principles, virtues, and the connection to systematic theology; and clerical educator John B. Hogan, a casuist who developed a more inductive and historically conscious methodology. Curran describes how all three men dealt in different ways with the increasing role of authoritative teachings in moral theology from the Vatican. He also shows how they reflected their American context and the views of their own time on women and sexuality. So little attention has been paid to the development of moral theology in this country that these authors are unknown to many scholars. Curran's book corrects this oversight and proposes that the ferment revealed in their writings offers important lessons for contemporary Catholic moral theology.
