Turkey, Ancient and Modern by Robert William Fraser Pdf

Excerpt from Turkey, Ancient and Modern: A History of the Ottoman Empire From the Period of Its Establishment to the Present Time; With Appendix Tar; empire of the Sultan has for ages been in vested with a high degree of interest. During its early progress, the mystery and vagueness of what little was known of its military organization, and the marvellous incidents which were constantly illustrating its annals, caused the nations to regard it with some what of the indefinite dread which aerial meteors were wont to excite. In more modern times, notwithstanding the termination of its career of conquest, the interest attached to it has become greatly enhanced by the romantic beauty of its capital, the chivalrous courage of its subjects, the important geographical position which it occupies in the centre of the ancient world, and by its having been regarded as the keystone of the arch of European politics. The Foundation of the Ottoman Empire by Herbert Adams Gibbons Pdf

Excerpt from The Foundation of the Ottoman Empire: A History of the Osmanlis Up to the Death of Bayezid I, 1300-1403 I plead guilty to many footnotes. Much of my text is controversial in character, and tlr subject-matter is so little known that the general reader would hardly be able to form judgements without a constant - but I trust not wearisome - reference to authorities. A Brief History of Turkey (Classic Reprint) by Johannes Blochwitz Pdf

Excerpt from A Brief History of Turkey The deep interest now felt by all intelligent people in the affairs of the Ottoman Empire sug gested the preparation of the following brief and comprehensive epitome of the principal events of Turkish history. To those who wish to become quickly familiar with this subject, on which a want of general information is not uncommon, this little work will be welcome, as no similar epitome of Turkish history is now to be found. To make it available for all, the subject has been popularly treated, and events are described rap idly without' unnecessary comment. The use of Turkish terms has been avoided as far as possi ble: of those which it seemed necessary to use. Turkey of the Ottomans (Classic Reprint) by Lucy M. Garnett Pdf

Excerpt from Turkey of the Ottomans The Albanians have been recently brought into special prominence by their long maintained revolt against the authority of the Porte. The attempt of the Constitutional Government to consolidate the nation by the uniform application of new measures to all its constituent ethnical elements has had the not very surprising result - considering the dissimilarity of these various elements - Of producing serious hostility to cer tain enactments, especially among the non-turkish Moslems who, under the old régime, had enjoyed special privileges now menaced by the new order. There were, accordingly, risings among the Arabs of the Hedjaz, and risings in Kurdistan, which were more or less speedily suppressed. But the revolt of the Albanians, having more serious causes, proved a more difficult matter. The new enactments especially obnoxious to these highlanders were three in number - (l) Enforcement of the conscription among the tribesmen (2) their general disarmament; and (3) the compulsory use of the Arabic alphabet for their Aryan language. The Turkish Empire by Thomas Milner Pdf

Excerpt from The Turkish Empire: The Sultans, the Territory, and the People The Ottoman or Osmanli 'i\1rks are identical as a people with numerous and extensive tribes scattered over the plains and table-lands of Central and Western Asia, pastoral in their occupations, warlike in disposi tion, predacious in habits, and nomadic in their mode of life. These tribes have particular local designations, as Turkomans, Iliyats, Kirghises, Usbecks, and Nogays, besides others derived from the names of the districts they occupy, or from those of celebrated Chieftains. They are also popularly distinguished by the compre hensive appellation of Tatars, and their ancestors appear to have been known to the ancients by the general denomination of Scythians. The Turkish Empire Its Growth and Decay (Classic Reprint) by Lord Eversley Pdf

Excerpt from The Turkish Empire Its Growth and Decay The favour with which, two years ago, my book on The Partitions of Poland was received by the public has induced me to devote the interval to a study of the history of another State which, in modern times, has almost disappeared from the map of Europe - namely Turkey. The subject is one in which I have for many years past taken great interest. In the course of a long life!, I have witnessed the greater part of the events which have resulted in the loss to that State of all its Christian provinces in Europe and all its Moslem provinces in Africa, leaving to it only its capital and a small part of Thrace in Europe, and its still wide possessions in Asia. So long ago, also, as in 1855 and 1857, I spent some time at Constantinople and travelled in Bulgaria and Greece, and was able to appreciate the effects of Turkish rule. As a result, I gave a full support, in 1876, to Mr. Gladstone in his efforts to secure the independence of Bulgaria and in 1879 was an active member of a committee, presided over by Lord Rosebery, which had for its object the extension of the kingdom of Greece so as to include the provinces inhabited by Greeks still suffering under Turkish rule. In 1887 and 1890 I again visited the East and travelled over the same ground as thirty years earlier, and was able to observe the immense improvements which had been effected in the provinces that had gained independence, and how little change had taken place at Constantinople.
