The International Harvester Company by Chaim M. Rosenberg Pdf

Ancient farmers used draft animals for plowing but the heavy work of harvesting fell to the humans, using sickle and scythe. Change came in the mid-19th century when Cyrus Hall McCormick built the mechanical harvester. Though the McCormicks used their wealth to establish art collections and universities, battle disease, and develop birth control, members of the family faced constant scrutiny and scandal. This book recounts their story as well as the history of the International Harvester Company (IHC)--a merger of the McCormick and Deering companies and the world's leader in agricultural machinery in the 1900s.

Agriculture in the Midwest, 1815-1900 by R. Douglas Hurt Pdf

After the War of 1812 and the removal of the region's Indigenous peoples, the American Midwest became a paradoxical land for settlers. Even as many settlers found that the region provided the bountiful life of their dreams, others found disappointment, even failure--and still others suffered social and racial prejudice. In this broad and authoritative survey of midwestern agriculture from the War of 1812 to the turn of the twentieth century, R. Douglas Hurt contends that this region proved to be the country's garden spot and the nation's heart of agricultural production. During these eighty-five years the region transformed from a sparsely settled area to the home of large industrial and commercial cities, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Detroit. Still, it remained primarily an agricultural region that promised a better life for many of the people who acquired land, raised crops and livestock, provided for their families, adopted new technologies, and sought political reform to benefit their economic interests. Focusing on the history of midwestern agriculture during wartime, utopian isolation, and colonization as well as political unrest, Hurt contextualizes myriad facets of the region's past to show how agricultural life developed for midwestern farmers--and to reflect on what that meant for the region and nation.

The American Reaper by Gordon M. Winder Pdf

The American Reaper adopts a network approach to account for the international diffusion of harvesting technology from North America, from the invention of the reaper through to the formation of a dominant transnational corporation, International Harvester. Much previous historical research into industrial networks focuses on industrial districts within metropolitan centres, but by focusing on harvesting - a typically rural technology - this book is able to analyse the spread of technological knowledge through a series of local networks and across national boundaries. In doing so it argues that the industry developed through a relatively stable stage from the 1850s into the 1890s, during which time many firms shared knowledge within and outside the US through patent licensing, to spread the diffusion of the American style of machines to establishments located around the industrial world. This positive cooperation was further enhanced through sales networks that appear to be early expressions of managerial firms. The book also reinterprets the rise of giant corporations, especially International Harvester Corporation (IHC), arguing that mass production was achieved in Chicago in the 1880s, where unprecedented urban growth made possible a break with the constraints felt elsewhere in the dispersed production system. It unleashed an unchecked competitive market economy with destructive tendencies throughout the transnational 'American reaper' networks; a previously stable and expanding production system. This is significant because the rise of corporate capital in this industry is usually explained as an outworking of national natural advantage, as an ingenious harnessing of science and technology to solve production problems, and as a rational solution to the problems associated with the worst forms of unregulated competition that emerged as independent firms developed from small-scale, artisanal production to large-scale manufacturers, on their own and within the separate and isolated US economy. The first study dedicated to the development and diffusion of American harvesting machine technology, this book will appeal to scholars from a diverse range of fields, including economic history, business history, the history of knowledge transfer, historical geography and economic geography.

Precision Agriculture and Food Production by Charles J. McMillan Pdf

Around the world, the public faces a stark dilemma: food scarcity and food abundance, with food waste now reaching a trillion dollars a year. Rich countries have easy access to food products and can purchase a 300-gram chocolate bar for $4.00, yet a cocoa farmer in Africa earns less than $1 a day. This book provides a comprehensive study of the food production system, from farms and farming to the ultimate haute cuisine of the finest restaurants, and corporate business models, from commodity traders, food producers, and food retailers. Problems arise with the rising value of land and corporate strategies to minimize risk and seeking low-cost inputs, including the prices paid to farmers. For centuries, science and technology have played a role in all aspects of the ‘total system’. Together, they have improved plant yields, soil condition, animal health, and machine mechanization, including plant-based meat and dairy products. A new paradigm, precision agriculture, now beckons.

All of them are explored in the fascinating Icons of Invention: The Makers of the Modern World from Gutenberg to Gates. This in-depth resource tells the stories of 24 of the most influential and well-known inventions of the modern age—and of the individuals most responsible for their development. Presented in chronological order, the entries provide background on the lives and work of inventors such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Fleming, and Tim Berners-Lee. At the same time, the set profiles their competitors and details the sometimes-controversial, often-mistake-plagued routes almost all of them took to their most famous creations.

The Fruited Plain by Walter Ebeling Pdf

Some consider American agriculture as one of the wonders of the modern world. In this book Walter Ebeling tells its story. Professor Ebeling grew up on a farm, loves the soil, and had the good fortune to have been closely associated with the land in all its aspects. Beginning with a brief history of why and how preagricultural peoples changed from hunters and gatherers and eventually became tillers of the soil, Professor Ebeling then deals with the seven geographic regions of the United States--from the East to California--giving the history and present status of agriculture for each reason. Although the main thrust of The Fruited Plain is the drama, romance, and excitement of the American agricultural experience, Professor Ebeling is concerned with the environmental, ecological, and sociological aspects of agriculture and its supporting industries. He discusses environmental problems in America that began when the Indians' "shifting" agriculture (allowing for long periods of soil restoration) was replaced by the white man's permanent agriculture. He examines the modern technology for a successful and environmentally viable permanent agriculture and how it can be implemente on a much larger scale. The questions asked--and answered--are what are the principal environmental problems? What is being, and/or can be done about soil erosion? Scarcity of water? Urban encroachment on agricultural lands? What directions can be taken by benevolent technology? Does technology have remedies for land that is susceptible to water erosion and loss of topsoil? Likewise, pollution and environmental degradation resulting from excessive use of pesticides? Our society much recognize the importance of protecting our agricultural resources, and Professor Ebeling, in this monumental book, gives many suggestions on how to accomplish the sustained utilization of America's great resource--the farmlands.
