The Chemistry and Technology of Paints (Classic Reprint) by Maximilian Toch Pdf

Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Paints The manufacture of mixed paints is essentially American, having been accredited to' some enterprising New Englanders who observed that when a linseed oil paint was mixed with a solution of silicate of Soda (water glass) an emulsion was formed, and the paint SO made showed very little tendency to settle or harden in the package. Several lay claim to this discovery. The first mixed paint was marketed in.small packages for home consumption and appeared about 1865. The addition of silicate of soda is still practised by a few manufacturers, but the tendency is to eliminate 'it as far as possible and to minimize as much as possible the use of an alkaline watery solution to keep the paint in suspension. The general use of zinc oxid has had much to do With the progress of mixed paint, for it is well known that corroded White lead and linseed oil settle quickly in the package, while zinc oxid keeps the heavier lead longer in suspension. Where only heavy materials are used, manufacturers are inclined to add up to 4 per cent of water. Under another chapter on Water in the Composition of Mixed Paints, page 254, this subject will be fully discussed. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ...continued oxidation takes place a white enamel paint may turn entirely pink, due to the formation of a manganese salt of that color. Where lead is used slow and sticky drying may result, but where lead and manganese are used together in dark colored enamels excellent results are obtained and any change in color value is not noticed. Some stand oils are made also by partial oxidation or blowing and partial heating. These, however, are short, and when placed between the thumb and forefinger and rubbed rapidly do not form a long thread but a short thread. Experience has taught that a short oil is short lived and a long oil is long lived. There is obviously a good reason for this, as the short oil has been highly oxidized and continues to oxidize after it is dry. Yet for interior enamel purposes a short enamel oil will last many years. One of the best features of enamel oil or stand oil is that brush marks even with a poor brush are eliminated and flow together. Zinc oxid is the principal pigment used in the manufacture of all of these enamel paints. Japanner's Pruss1an Brown O1l This is a stand oil or marble oil identical in all respects with that described under the heading "Stand Oil," excepting that it is dark in color and therefore only used for making dark colored enamels such as patent leather, machinery enamels and waterproof coatings which must have a high glaze. The method used for making this oil depends very largely upon the good quality of the linseed oil, and the oil must have no tendency to "break" whatever. It must be heated to 5500, at which temperature three ounces dry or six ounces in oil of Japanner's Prussian Brown are added slowly until the oil which at first is muddy becomes clear and of the color...

Introduction to Paint Chemistry and principles of paint technology, Fourth Edition by John Bentley,G.P.A. Turner Pdf

This work provides a comprehensive introduction to paint technology supported by the relevant aspects of chemistry and physics. It covers the basic science and is devoted to paint composition, formulation and drying mechanisms, paint ingredients such as solvents, pigments and additives, and the different paint groups by chemical type. Throughout the book the authors emphasize the factors which govern the choice of a particular paint for a particular job. This new edition has been thoroughly revised to modernize and clarify the text. Areas of new development have been added including environmental impacts, safety issues and modern paint making techniques. Nomenclature and units have also been updated and a glossary of technical terms added. This book should be of interest as a course text for paint technology students and technical staff concerned with the paint industry.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xvi analytical The Analyses Of Mixed Paint The analysis and chemical examination of a mixed paint is by no means a simple matter, and not every chemist is fitted for this work. The intellectual development of a man's reasoning power is of vast importance in all scientific work, but the science of "deduction," if there be such a science, would be of the greatest importance in the training of a chemist. Woe to the chemist who starts on a false premise for he can be misled into most impossible conclusions, and if he be a man of recognized authority in other branches, his mistakes can ofttimes create a great deal of havoc. Reactions in paint chemistry are almost always irreversible, if they be organic. If a mixed paint be made of silica, calcium carbonate, and zinc oxide, it can readily be seen that these pigments can be extracted from the paint and recovered almost exactly as they were put into the mixture. If the vehicle be composed of raw linseed oil, white Japan, turpentine, and benzine, it is impossible to regain these four liquids and separate them into four vessels as they were originally used. The inorganic part of this mixture can, therefore, be determined with great accuracy, but the organic part cannot. Personal experience, or a knowledge of the experience of others, is of great assistance in the intelligent examination of a paint, and the surest proof of the correctness of an analysis is to make the synthesis. A chemist who will find benzol (CeH6) in a black paint, and who will report by inference that this paint contains coal tar because he found benzol in it and because the paint was black, makes a very serious error. A paint analysis can often be compared to an analysis which the author saw of some biscuit crumbs. The...

Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Mixed Paints The difficulty which I encountered in writing this book was not how much to write but how much to omit, for I found on compiling my notes that I could very easily have made two volumes, each larger than the present one, and still I would not have covered the ground thoroughly. It is for, this reason that I have omitted many of the pigments which are rarely used, and have paid no attention whatever to the pigments which have gone out of use. Introduction to Paint Chemistry and Principles of Paint Technology by G. P. Turner Pdf

Introduction to Paint Chemistry was first published in 1967 with~he intention of providing both a textbook for students and an introduction to the subject for those with little or no technical knowledee. This remains the objective. The book was completely revised in 1980, but the pace of change continued to quicken. In this third edition, I have sought to bring it up to date with the newest developments in the technology and, with an additional chapter, to emphasize the importance of the painting system as a composite, in which the substrate and its chemistry playa vital role. The book is divided into two parts. Part One begins at the very basis of matter-its atomic structure-and works step by step through a sufficient selection of chemistry and physics to allow any interested reader to cope with the chemistry and the technology of paint in Part Two. The reader should absorb as much of Part One as he or she feels necessary. It is worth noting, however, that the topics in it are specially selected from a paint point of view and that, for example, detail on oils in Chapter 3, on polymers in Chapter 5 and on light and colour in Chapter 6 could well be missing in some Chemistry degree courses.
