The Psychology of the Common Branches (Classic Reprint) by Frank Nugent Freeman Pdf

Excerpt from The Psychology of the Common Branches In order to supervise the child's learning most effectively, it is necessary to know what mental changes take place in the different forms of learning which he undertakes. Merely to know the result which is aimed at is not sufficient important as this is. One can learn in a short time to distinguish between good and poor writing, between an adequate and an inadequate understanding of history or geography, or between different degrees of proficiency in the pursuit of a science. A clerk can correct examination papers in arithmetic or spelling. These forms of discrimina tion make up the art of the examiner. When carried to a high degree of perfectidii in the development of standard tests of attainment, this art becomes more difficult, and it becomes possible to use the results in directing the pupil's efforts. But in the main the art of the teacher is the far more delicate one of following the changes which take place in the mind of the pupil, and of bringing to bear his influence upon them to produce the highest degree of improvement with the least expenditure of effort. In order to understand the process which is going on in the child's mind when he learns the various branches, it is necessary to have a conception of the typical learning processes which are involved in these branches. The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training by W. E. Urwick Pdf

Excerpt from The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training: Being a Short Study of Some Processes of Learning and Teaching The reasons for writing this book are sufficiently set forth in the introduction. It is not a treatise on psychology, still less a new and full-fledged theory of education. Nor, on the other hand, is it a com plete handbook for teachers. It is rather an attempt to set forth in simple and, as far as possible, untech nical language some results already obtained from a study of mind growth as an organic process, and to establish a clear and definite connexion between those processes of learning which mind possesses, and the methods by which it should be taught and trained. These chapters will, it is hoped, enable the young teacher to use in practice the facts which he learns in his outline study of physiology and psy chology, and provide the experienced teacher with a framework on to which he may fit the results of his experience without committing himself to any one philosophic system. Perhaps at a time when the problems of education are so widely discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Child Mind by Henrietta Home Pdf

Excerpt from The Child Mind: A Study in Elementary Ethology Then, the book is intended for those who confess to total ignorance of the juvenile mind, who say they are afraid of children, because in these days they are so grown-up, you know, and who think that a child only cares for people who play, excluding from its affections those who merely speak. And the object of such miniature philosophy is this that in con sideration of the fact that there must be in England so many others better fitted than the present author to propound views which in themselves are valuable, it is hoped that some one, whose mental and sentimental equipment is of the strongest, will enlarge upon the subject, draw attention to the starvation which is now possessing the souls of so many boys and girls, and, by this means, feed natures which, if warped and dwarfed, will turn into future atheists, pessimists, and dyspeptics of bitter tongue and sarcastic speech. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Pdf

As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Designed to include all of the texts from Presocratics through Machiavelli likely to be read in an undergraduate course on classical political thought, this anthology has at its core generous selections from Plato and Aristotle. Building on this core is a sufficiently diverse and substantial selection of texts from other writers--including Thucydides and the Sophists--to allow for inquiry into the variety of Classical Greek approaches to politics, as well as into Roman, Medieval and Renaissance developments of the classical tradition. Preeminent translations and the editor's own thoughtful introductions further distinguish this unique anthology.

The Child by Richard A. Shweder,Thomas R. Bidell,Anne C. Dailey,Suzanne D. Dixon,Peggy J. Miller,John Modell Pdf

The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion offers both parents and professionals access to the best scholarship from all areas of child studies in a remarkable one-volume reference. Bringing together contemporary research on children and childhood from pediatrics, child psychology, childhood studies, education, sociology, history, law, anthropology, and other related areas, The Child contains more than 500 articles—all written by experts in their fields and overseen by a panel of distinguished editors led by anthropologist Richard A. Shweder. Each entry provides a concise and accessible synopsis of the topic at hand. For example, the entry “Adoption” begins with a general definition, followed by a detailed look at adoption in different cultures and at different times, a summary of the associated mental and developmental issues that can arise, and an overview of applicable legal and public policy. While presenting certain universal facts about children’s development from birth through adolescence, the entries also address the many worlds of childhood both within the United States and around the globe. They consider the ways that in which race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and cultural traditions of child rearing can affect children’s experiences of physical and mental health, education, and family. Alongside the topical entries, The Child includes more than forty “Imagining Each Other” essays, which focus on the particular experiences of children in different cultures. In “Work before Play for Yucatec Maya Children,” for example, readers learn of the work responsibilities of some modern-day Mexican children, while in “A Hindu Brahman Boy Is Born Again,” they witness a coming-of-age ritual in contemporary India. Compiled by some of the most distinguished child development researchers in the world, The Child will broaden the current scope of knowledge on children and childhood. It is an unparalleled resource for parents, social workers, researchers, educators, and others who work with children.
