The Children and the Pictures (Classic Reprint) by Pamela Grey Pdf

Excerpt from The Children and the Pictures She lay down again, and tried to go to sleep, but one feels very wide awake indeed if one keeps thinking of one thing in particular. You feel even if you buttoned your lids down, they would still flutter wide. There is a writer called George Herbert of whom you have heard, and in one of his poems he says, I hasted to my bed, But when I thought to sleep out all these faults (i sigh to speak) I found that some had stuffed the bed with thoughts, I would say thorns. The Children's Album of Pictures and Stories by Asa Bullard Pdf

Excerpt from The Children's Album of Pictures and Stories: Abridged Ens, which was published by the Massachusetts Sab bath School Society. It was intended, as its title indicates, merely for the very little ones. This book has been so eagerly sought for by mothers, and its influence found to be so happy upon their little ones, that the author has the more readily assented to the request of the publisher of the pres ent volume to write and compile a larger work of the same general character, but designed for all the children. Such a book, it is hoped, the children's album will be found. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How to Show Pictures to Children (Classic Reprint) by Estelle M. Hurll Pdf

Excerpt from How to Show Pictures to Children IN preparing the Riverside Art Series for publica tion some years ago, I first came to a full realization of What a picture may mean in a child's life. It is like a magic carpet transporting him to distant realms, or like Aladdin's lamp bringing him for the time being his heart's desire. No figure is too fanciful to express the wondrous capacity it has for quickening the imagination and giving joy. We can hardly overstate its influence upon the mind and character. It is sometimes said that this is a mechanical age and ours is a mercenary, not an art-loving, people. But this is not the testimony which comes from the home and school. The children all love pictures, love to look at them, love to hear about them, love to possess them. And we, who have the shaping of their youthful tastes, are eager to guide them aright. We want to consider what pictures our children like best, and why; What pictures we want them to like, and why; how we can cultivate their taste for the best art, and where we can find the material. Such questions con cern the deep issues of life. If the child's single moment of pleasure were all that was to be con. Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea by O. H. Peters Pdf

Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
