The Chinese Capital Markets by Chris Adcock,Douglas Cumming,Alessandra Guariglia,Wenxuan Hou Pdf

In the past China’s capital market featured prevalent state ownership and a weak legal environment. It has, however, achieved very substantial development in the past two decades. China has surpassed Japan as the world’s second-largest stock market and has also emerged as a leading player in green bonds and Fintech markets. The chapters in this book provide insights on Chinese listed firms and advance the understanding of China’s unique institutions. Some important questions are covered including the governance role of foreign investors in partially privatized firms, the financial implications of political connections, the "Chinese model" of commercial banks and regulatory reforms that promote the marketization of the stock markets, among others. These studies have important implications for other emerging economies, on the recent China-US trade conflicts and about the Trump administration's complaints about the role of the Chinese government in capital markets. This book selectively includes the most influential articles from two special issues of The European Journal of Finance, which were based on selections of papers presented at a series of conferences on the Chinese Capital Markets.

Who Gets Funds from China’s Capital Market? by Jiazhuo G. Wang,Juan Yang Pdf

The subject of this book is an analysis of the business models developed or adopted by Chinese small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), specifically those that are successfully listed on China’s capital market; in other words, it is a dissection of those Chinese business models that have “worked.” In China, there are over 10 million companies that are registered with China’s State Industrial and Commercial Administration and over 40 million unregistered businesses. Among them, only about 1,000 companies became successfully listed on China’s capital market and were able to obtain public funds from equity investors. This book takes a look at who these “lucky ones” were and what business models led to their success in a highly competitive Chinese market, investigations that will certainly be of interest to both Chinese and international readerships. In addition, this book provides a nuanced and micro view of the Chinese economy. As China’s economy increasingly receives attention worldwide, the amount of research and publications on China’s economy is also growing exponentially. However, the majority of these studies only focus on the macro level of the Chinese economy and aggregate variables such as GDP, growth rate, inflation, etc., while little research has been done at a micro and company level to analyze the Chinese economy. Thus, this book’s focus on the case studies of representative firms may help fill some gaps in the study of business and the economy in China. Furthermore, this book hopes to dispel certain misconceptions about the nature of the Chinese economy. There is currently a stereotypical view about Chinese economy, for example that China, as the workshop of the world, primarily produces low-end products with low prices to be sold in other countries by budget retailers like Wal-Mart or dollar stores. While that is true to some extent, it is certainly not the whole story. The companies analyzed in this book cover a wide spectrum of industries including modern agriculture, alternative energy, resources recycling, mobile games, animation, luxury products, supply chain management, filmmaking and TV series production, displaying to readers the brand-new industrial structure of Chinese companies in the 21st century.

Chinese Capital Markets by Douglas J. Cumming Pdf

Eight years ago, The European Journal of Finance (EJF) published the first special issue on the Chinese Capital Markets. This was at a time when Chinese topics were not widely accepted by internationally excellent finance journals. Since then, The European Journal of Finance had published four special issues both containing and encouraging studies that reveal the unique institutions of China. This editorial summarises the articles included in this 5th CCM special issue and discusses a series of legislative and regulatory changes, which has strengthened the role of the Chinese Communist Party in the economy and society under the “Party leads everything” doctrine. We encourage future studies to examine their implications on finance and economics and believe that the results of such studies will be helpful for the CPC and the Chinese Government to shape future policies to ensure sustainable development.

Chinese Companies and the Hong Kong Stock Market by Flora Xiao Huang,Horace Yeung Pdf

Listing by companies from one country on the stock market of another country is a device often used both to raise capital in, and to increase bonding with, the target country. This book examines the listing by Chinese companies on the Hong Kong stock market. It discusses the extent of the phenomenon, compares the two different regulatory regimes, and explores the motivations for the cross-listing. It argues that a key factor, in addition to raising capital and bonding with the Hong Kong market, is Chinese companies’ desire to encourage legal and regulatory reforms along Hong Kong lines in mainland China, in order to develop and open up China’s domestic capital markets.

Experiences and Challenges in the Development of the Chinese Capital Market by Douglas Cumming,Alessandra Guariglia,Wenxuan Hou,Edward Lee Pdf

The focus of the global economy has increasingly shifted toward China and emerging countries. However, despite their high growth prospects, emerging economies often lack the sound capital market and corporate governance systems necessary to promote the efficient allocation of financial resources to maintain the confidence of capital providers. As China becomes more prominent economically, the development of its capital market becomes an increasingly important issue. This book presents some of the latest academic research on China's capital markets, demonstrating some of the major issues currently being faced. Preeminent researchers in the field examine key topics such as the performance of commercial banks, dividends and ownership, financial constraints and firm performance, the role of political networks, stock price decomposition, stock return predictability, and the role of media coverage. In this book, the authors use the country's institutional background to offer useful insight into policy implications for the development of China as well as other emerging economies.
