The Chinese Photobook (Signed Edition) by Martin Parr Pdf

In the last decade there has been a major reappraisal of the role and status of the photobook within the history of photography. Newly revised histories of photography as recorded via the photobook have added enormously to our understanding of the medium's culture, particularly in places that are often marginalized, such as Latin America and Africa. However, until now, only a handful of Chinese books have made it onto historians' short lists. Yet China has a fascinating history of photobook publishing, and "The Chinese Photobook" will reveal for the first time the richness and diversity of this heritage. This volume is based on a collection compiled by Martin Parr and Beijing- and London-based Dutch photographer team WassinkLundgren. And while the collection was inspired initially by Parr's interest in propaganda books and in finding key works of socialist realist photography from the early days of the Communist Party and the Cultural Revolution era, the selection of books includes key volumes published as early as 1900, as well as contemporary volumes by emerging Chinese photographers. Each featured photobook offers a new perspective on the complicated history of China from the twentieth century onward. "The Chinese Photobook" embodies an unprecedented amount of research and scholarship in this area, and includes accompanying texts and individual title descriptions by Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Ruben Lundgren, Stephanie H. Tung and Gerry Badger.

The Chinese Photobook by Martin Parr,WassinkLundgren (Photography partnership) Pdf

"The Chinese Photobook : From the 1900s to the Present offers an introduction to the richness and diversity of photobooks published about China, including key titles by established and emerging contemporary Chinese photographers published in recent years; books created by early colonial powers in China, including France, Germany, and Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War; and a selection of books produced during the first years of New China and the Cultural Revolution, among many others. Over the last decade there has been a major reappraisal of the role and status of the photobook within the history of photography. These revisionist histories have added enormously to our reading and understanding of the culture of photography, particularly in places that are often marginalized, such as Latin America and South Africa. However, until now, only a few Chinese photobooks have made it onto historians' short lists. Yet China has a fascinating history of publishing photography--including publications produced by the Chinese state as well as those that offer an external perspective, by some of the world's greatest photographers. Here, over 250 volumes, drawn primarily from Martin Parr's peer-less collection of photobooks, are contextualized by and international team of scholars and historians: Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Ruben Lundgren, Stephanie H. Tung, and Gerry Badger. Their painstaking research into each of the featured books unveils a complex, multifaceted perspective of China, revealing much about the country and the dramatic twists and turns of its history over the last century." -- Book jacket.

The Chinese Photobook by Gu Zheng,Raymond Lum,Stephanie H. Tung,Gerry Badger Pdf

"Starting in the late nineteenth century, China has been the subject of multiple bodies of photographic endeavor, but it was never before so clear how many, nor quite how significant a role Chinese photographers played in shaping the image of their own sociopolitical and cultural environment. The Chinese Photobook provides an essential overview of the image of Chine through a century and more, via a compendium of visions domestic and external, intuitive, creative, and ideological. As someone who has photographed China for several decades, I believe this collection makes a great contribution to the discussion about doing just that -"photographing China."

Beyond Caring by Paul Graham,David Chandler Pdf

Paul Graham's Beyond Caring published in 1986 is now considered one of the key works from Britain's wave of "New Color" photography that was gaining momentum in the 1980s. While commissioned to present his view of "Britain in 1984," Graham turned his attention towards the waiting rooms, queues and poor conditions of overburdened Social Security and Unemployment offices across the United Kingdom. Photographing surreptitiously, his camera is both witness and protagonist within a bureaucratic system that speaks to the humiliation and indignity aimed towards the most vulnerable end of society. Books on Books #9 presents every page spread of Graham's controversial book along with a contemporary essay by writer and curator David Chandler.--Publisher.

I Was Lured Into a Tea Shop by Jonathan Desmond Pdf

It was the dawn of a New Year and I was ready to make my resolutions. As I watched the countdown of 2012 and prepared myself to usher in 2013, I made a commitment to complete a 1- year photography project that would explore and encompass Vancouver's Chinatown.I began in the cold months of early 2013 and started walking around Chinatown rather casually. I usually started from the large gate standing over Pender Street and then worked my way around the various other avenues and roads that encompassed Vancouver's Chinatown. I explored shops and stalls and observed people going about their daily lives, all while documenting it with my camera as best as I could. As I passed by people and observed both from a distance and up-close, a thought came to me: I was an outsider. I didn't know anyone in Chinatown and having not grown up in the neighborhood I found myself in unfamiliar territory. This meant that everything was fresh and new to me as I walked around the Chinatown streets but also meant that, despite a few visits to Chinatown in my earlier years, I was basically a blank canvas.

Martin Parr: Life's a Beach (Signed Edition) by Martin Parr Pdf

Following on the heels of Martin Parr's limited-edition, album-style publication Life's a Beach, Aperture now presents this beach-friendly mini edition. Parr has been photographing the topic of the beach for many decades, documenting sunbathers, rambunctious swimmers caught mid-plunge and the eternal sandy picnic. His international career, in fact, could well be traced to the publication of The Last Resort (1986), which depicted the seaside resort of New Brighton, near Liverpool. What is perhaps less known is that this obsession has led Parr to photograph beaches around the world. This compilation, his first on the topic, presents photos of beachgoers on far-flung shores, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Thailand, and of course, the U.K. The compilation brings to the forefront Parr's engagement with a cherished subject matter--that rare public space in which general absurdities and local quirks seamlessly fuse together. This book shows Parr at his best, startling us with moments of captured absurdity and immersing us in rituals and traditions associated with beach life the world over.

The Unchosen Ones by R. J. Kern Pdf

In 2016, award-winning Minnesota-based photographer R. J. Kern made portraits of youth contestants at Minnesota county fairs. Each participant—some as young as four years old—had spent a year raising an animal, which they had then entered into a 4-H livestock competition. None of the youths who sat for him had succeeded in winning an award, despite the obvious care they had given to their animals. The Unchosen Ones depicts the bloom of youth and the mettle of the kids who grow up on farms, reminding us how resilient children can be when confronted with life's inevitable disappointments. The formal qualities of the lighting and setting endow these young people with a gravitas beyond their years, revealing self-directed dedication in some, and in others, perhaps, the pressures of traditions imposed upon them. Kern's beautiful portraits capture a particular America, a rural world, and a time in life when the layered emotions of youth are laid bare. Four years later, in 2020, Kern returned to photograph his young subjects. The most recent photographs show how the children have grown into adolescence or young adulthood: some of them have continued to pursue animal husbandry, while others have developed other interests. It is likely that some of these kids will not choose to continue running their family farms—an unpredictable and demanding way to make a living. These diptychs are punctuated by lush landscapes of the farms that are their homes. As Kern made the second group of photographs, he asked his young subjects what they had carried forward from their previous experience. What were their thoughts, their dreams, and their goals for the future? How would they fit into the future of agricultural America?

Weathering Time by NANCY. FLOYD Pdf

'It's not just the body that changes: Fashions and hairstyles evolve; pets come and go; typewriters, analog clocks, and telephones with cords disappear; and finally, film gives way to digital and the computer replaces the darkroom. While Weathering Time is a personal archive, and I am mining the archive to address issues of the female body, the family snapshot and loss, I am also interested in producing images that suggest some of the experiences of my generation. Indeed, the photographs underscore the cultural, technological, and physical changes that have occurred over the past thirty-five years--from my youth to the dawn of my old age.' Nancy Floyd

Understanding Photobooks by Jorg Colberg Pdf

Understanding Photobooks is a user-friendly guide to engaging with the photographic book— or, as it is widely known, the photobook. Despite its importance as a central medium in which many photographers showcase their work today, there is surprisingly little information on the mechanics of the photobook: what exactly it does and how it does it. Written for makers and artists, this book will help you develop a better understanding of the images, concept, sequence, design, and production of the photobook. With an awareness of the connections between these elements, you’ll be able to evaluate photobooks more clearly and easily, ultimately allowing for a deeper and more rewarding experience of the work.

China by Edward Burtynsky,Marc Daniel Mayer,Ted C. Fishman,Mark Kingwell Pdf

"In this book, Edward Burtynsky presents photographs of the remnant and newly established zones of Chinese industrialization - those places created while realizing the "glory" of wealth for a powerful civilization yearning to move forward and join the ranks of modern nations. Using diplomatic channels, Burtynsky has gained rare access to these sites, creating images that are at once arresting and unsettling. These photographs afford us privileged glimpses of the vast social and economic transformation currently underway in China." "Burtynsky casts a watchful eye over the extreme expressions of Chinese industry. His subjects include the Three Gorges Dam, at present the world's largest engineering project and Bao Steel, China's biggest steel producer. He explores the vanishing dinosaurs of old industrial complexes in the north eastern "rust belt" and shipyards at Qiligang, the single most concentrated area of shipbuilding in the country."--BOOK JACKET.

"The early settlers dubbed California The Golden State, and The Land of Milk and Honey. Today there are the obvious ironies -- sprawl, spaghetti junctions and skid row--but the place is not so easily distilled or visualized, either as a clichéd paradise or as its demise. There's a strange kind of harmony when it's all seen together--the sublime, the psychedelic, the self-destructive. Like all places, it's unpredictable and contradictory, but to greater extremes. Cultures and histories coexist, the beautiful sits next to the ugly, the redemptive next to the despairing, and all under a strange and singular light, as transcendent as it is harsh. The pictures in this book begin in the desert east of Los Angeles and move west through the city, ending at the Pacific. This general westward movement alludes to a thirst for water, as well as the original expansion of America, which was born in the East and which hungrily drove itself West until reaching the Pacific, thereby fulfilling its "manifest" destiny." -- Publisher's description
