The Christ That Failed by Jake Wheeler Pdf

The Christ that Failed proves incredibly timely as the "Death of the West" and the rise of the extreme racist right, commonly referred to as white nationalism, have become leading topics of conversation amongst many of the pundits, politicians and citizens of the United States and Europe. Recent tragic events in the news have put back into the headlines how cultural and demographic shifts within the West have produced a racial and cultural anxiety among growing segments of the population. Over the previous fifty years, the most extreme and vocal opponents of multiculturalism and nonwhite immigration have been members of the white nationalist movement. However, what is not known to the vast majority of Americans is that white nationalists in the United States have become increasingly anti-Christian, with a great many quite certain that the "Death of the West" and the supposed loss of white racial primacy began not with the abandonment of Christian morality, but instead with the West's adoption of Christian ethics some fifteen hundred years ago. The Christ that Failed is the first study into how and why a growing number of American white nationalists have come to abhor white Christians perhaps more than any other group.Compared to other books dedicated to the American racist right, The Christ that Failed is altogether new as it completely dispels with the widely accepted narrative that organized white supremacy in the United States has been, and remains, a decidedly "Christian" movement. At two hundred pages and drawing on extensive research into primary source materials, The Christ that Fails remains incredibly readable as it traces the ideas and careers of three of the most prominent American white nationalists of the twentieth century, a onetime respectable physics professor, William Pierce, a successful real-estate investor, Ben Klassen, and an imprisoned terrorist, David Lane, and uncovers how these three leaders each succeeded at divorcing American white nationalism from its historic links to the Christian faith. The Christ that Failed is more than merely the biographies of three anti-Christian ideologues. It is a never before told story which will undoubtedly appeal to a great many readers of differing backgrounds. It is a story of how organized Christianity's shift towards social justice in the 1960s came to alienate members of organized white supremacy and outlines how many within the movement sought out religious alternatives. The Christ that Failed also traces the shift within the movement from traditional Christian white supremacist positions, found most emblematically in the Ku Klux Klan, towards a Hitlerian white nationalism that came to dominate the movement by the 1970s. Furthermore, the book proves how in the 1980s a murderous white nationalist terror cell called The Order completely revolutionized the movement and helped to destroy American white nationalism's Christian "Old Guard." Finally, The Christ that Failed looks into the 1990s and 2000s and lays out how anti-Christian positions have come to literally dominate the discourse of American white nationalism. Through extensive and never before seen research, The Christ that Failed demands that the accepted narrative of American white nationalism be rewritten.Jake S. Wheeler holds a post-graduate degree in Modern Western History with special focus on race, nationalism and Christianity in the West. Wheeler currently works as a professor in Northern California.

A Theology of Failure by Marika Rose Pdf

Everyone agrees that theology has failed; but the question of how to understand and respond to this failure is complex and contested. Against both the radical orthodox attempt to return to a time before the theology’s failure and the deconstructive theological attempt to open theology up to the hope of a future beyond failure, Rose proposes an account of Christian identity as constituted by, not despite, failure. Understanding failure as central to theology opens up new possibilities for confronting Christianity’s violent and kyriarchal history and abandoning the attempt to discover a pure Christ outside of the grotesque materiality of the church. The Christian mystical tradition begins with Dionysius the Areopagite’s uncomfortable but productive conjunction of Christian theology and Neoplatonism. The tensions generated by this are central to Dionysius’s legacy, visible not only in subsequent theological thought but also in much twentieth century continental philosophy as it seeks to disentangle itself from its Christian ancestry. A Theology of Failure shows how the work of Slavoj Žižek represents an attempt to repeat the original move of Christian mystical theology, bringing together the themes of language, desire, and transcendence not with Neoplatonism but with a materialist account of the world. Tracing these themes through the work of Dionysius and Derrida and through contemporary debates about the gift, violence, and revolution, this book offers a critical theological engagement with Žižek's account of social and political transformation, showing how Žižek's work makes possible a materialist reading of apophatic theology and Christian identity.

Jesus by Bart D. Ehrman Pdf

In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings. Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet--a man convinced that the world would end dramatically within the lifetime of his apostles and that a new kingdom would be created on earth. According to Ehrman, Jesus' belief in a coming apocalypse and his expectation of an utter reversal in the world's social organization not only underscores the radicalism of his teachings but also sheds light on both the appeal of his message to society's outcasts and the threat he posed to Jerusalem's established leadership.

Theologies of Failure by Roberto Sirvent Pdf

What does failure mean for theology? In the Bible, we find some unsettling answers to this question. We find lastness usurping firstness, and foolishness undoing wisdom. We discover, too, a weakness more potent than strength, and a loss of life that is essential to finding life. Jesus himself offers an array of paradoxes and puzzles through his life and teachings. He even submits himself to humiliation and death to show the cosmos the true meaning of victory. As David Bentley Hart observes, "most of us would find Christians truly cast in the New Testament mold fairly obnoxious: civically reprobate, ideologically unsound, economically destructive, politically irresponsible, socially discreditable, and really just a bit indecent."By incorporating the work of scholars working with a range of frameworks within the Christian tradition, Theologies of Failure aims to offer a unique and important contribution on understanding and embracing failure as a pivotal theological category. As the various contributors highlight, it is a category with a powerful capacity for illuminating our theological concerns and perspectives. It is a category that frees us to see old ideas in a brand-new light, and helps to foster an awareness of ideas that certain modes of analysis may have obscured from our vision. In short, this book invites readers to consider how both theology and failure can help us ask new questions, discover new possibilities, and refuse the ways of the world.

God: The Failed Hypothesis by Victor J. Stenger Pdf

Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology, while science has sat on the sidelines. Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality. This book contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, physicist Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence. He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behavior for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation. After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God. This paperback edition of the New York Times bestselling hardcover edition contains a new foreword by Christopher Hitchens and a postscript by the author in which he responds to reviewers' criticisms of the original edition.

Gospel Interpretation and Christian Life by Francis J Moloney Pdf

The voice of Francis J Moloney, SDB, has been heard in New Testament studies for many decades. Internationally famous for his work on the Gospel of John, this volume gathers studies that demonstrate the breadth and richness of his interests, beyond that well-established enterprise. The first part of the boom is dedicated to Gospel studies, with the majority of essays focussing upon the Gospel of Mark. They reflect his long interest and his major commentary on that Gospel (2012). Studies on Matthew, Luke and John complete these reflections.

When We Get it Wrong by Dominic Smart Pdf

'Between Horror and Hope' is a study of Paul's metaphorical language of death in Romans 6:1-11. The scholarly debate focuses on two main issues; the origin of the 'commentatio mortis' tradition and its development. Dr. Sabou argues that the origin of this terminology is original to Paul; that it was the apostle's own insight into the meaning of Christ's death (a "death to sin") and his understanding of the identity of Christ in his death (as the anointed davidic king) which guided him to create this metaphor of "dying to sin" as a way of describing the relationship of the believer with sin. On the development of this language of death, the author argues that this language conveys two aspects — horror and hope. The first is discussed in the context of crucifixion in which Paul explains the believer's "death to sin" by presenting Christ's death as the death of the anointed davidic king who won the victory over sin and death by rising from the dead. Paul affirms that believers are "coalesced" with what was "proclaimed" about Christ's death and resurrection, thereby allowing him to assert that the releasing of the body from the power of sin is a result of "crucifixion." This "crucifixion" is the "condemnation" inflicted on our past lives in the age inaugurated by Adam's sin and this is such a horrible event that believers have to stay away from sin since sin leads to such punishment. In contrast, hope is presented in the context of "burial." The believers' "burial with" Christ points to the fact that they are part of Christ's family and this is accomplished by the overwhelming action of God by which he pushes us toward the event of Christ's death, an act pictured in baptism. It is this "burial with" Christ that allows believers to share with Christ in newness of life.

When We Have Failed--What Next? by K. P. Yohannan Pdf

We all have failed. “All have sinned,” says the Bible, leaving no one exempt. Yet we cringe at the very thought of our own failure—especially a “big” one. We try to cover it up and hide it from the world—particularly from those closest to us. But we cannot hide it from ourselves and inevitably, along with the actual failure comes the awful sting of regret, disappointment and feelings of worthlessness. As our world, whether publicly or privately, crumbles around us, we then face the next question: “What next?” We wonder how there can be a “next,” because we feel that our life is over or that we are destined to remain in our same rut of failure forever. But author K.P. Yohannan boldly declares that nothing could be further from the truth! In When We Have Failed—What Next?, the president of Gospel for Asia graciously takes us on a journey from our darkest failure toward a bright and hopeful future. He again and again depicts God’s unfailing love for us and His marvelous ability to bring out His very best for our lives, especially in the midst of our failure. In a key passage from a book filled with profound thoughts, Dr. Yohannan declares: “It’s not the size of our sin that determines whether or not we recover from a fall. It’s our response. How we deal with our failure determines our future.” Citing numerous real-life examples, this little booklet reminds those in the midst of the battle that “God desires to make your life into something beautiful and bring about His purposes through your failure.” This is a book that makes no compromise with sin, but that encourages all of us to believe in God’s grace—and in His purpose for our lives—and to look up, for the best is truly yet to come.
