The Church After the War (Classic Reprint) by William Oxley Thompson Pdf

Excerpt from The Church After the War I heartily commend this little volume as a sane and constructive statement of world religious conditions. Its wide circulation will clarify our thought upon present-day conditions. The Church and the Great War (Classic Reprint) by Worth Marion Tippy Pdf

Excerpt from The Church and the Great War The situation is now strong and hopeful, although much remains to be done The churches seem to be on the threshold Of a new era Of high social consciousness as well as Of spiritual quickening. It is to help this along, to show in a comprehensive way a little Of what is being done, to throw some light upon the path which is likely to he travelled, that this little book has been writ ten and sent on its way. It will be Observed that it has to do mainly with the war time service Of the Protestant churches, and that it does not attempt to describe or discuss the splendid war work Of the Catholic church. The Church After the War What? (Classic Reprint) by Robert E. Speer Pdf

Excerpt from The Church After the War What? Those who read this series of remarkable addresses will be profited if they are first reminded of exactly the incidents and the peculiar settings which called forth these ex pressions. In approaching the close of the Great War and in recognition of the tremendous responsibilities which would come to Protes tant Christianity, many of a type and character which had not been encountered hitherto, the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America was led to recommend a series 'of conferences to be held throughout the nation. The purpose of these conferences was first of all to study anew the questions which are confronting the churches, and second, to bring about nation-wide unity in the expression Of the best methods of meeting the needs thus discovered. The War and the Churches (Classic Reprint) by Joseph McCabe Pdf

Excerpt from The War and the Churches A dozen such questions will press for an answer, but it will be granted that one of the most urgent and most interesting of the many grave considerations which the war suggests is its relation to the prevailing creeds and standards of conduct. The war coincides with an advanced stage of what is called the spread of unbelief. In each of the nations of Europe which are engaged in this awful struggle complaints have been made every year for the last two or three generations that Christianity is losing its moral control of the white race. In the cities, especiallv in the capitals. Of Europe there has been 3 proved and acknowledged decay of church-going; and, however much we mav be disposed to think that these millions who no longer attend church retain in their minds the beliefs of their fathers, the slender circulation of religious literature makes it plain that the vast majority of them do not, in point of fact, receive either the spoken or written message of the Christian Church. In the great cities - and it is undoubted that the hf; of a nation is mainly controlled by its cities - there has been an increasing reluctance to listen to the authoritative exponents of the Christian gospel. The Vital Issues of the War (Classic Reprint) by Richard Wilson Boynton Pdf

Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. The War and the Bible (Classic Reprint) by H. G. Enelow Pdf

Excerpt from The War and the Bible In the early days of the War, it was thought by many that the whole spiritual problem was a ques tion of the success or failure of Religion. There were those who thought that when they said that the War signified the collapse of Religion or the bankruptcy of the Church, they had settled the matter. As if that removed, solved, or mitigated the problems which on a sudden confronted the spirit Of man. Their attitude, however, involved a twofold error. The Church and World Peace (Classic Reprint) by Richard J. Cooke Pdf

Excerpt from The Church and World Peace The world war is over. The legacy of war remains. The whirlwind Of death which left nothing it could destroy is passed, but ex hansted nations look with horror on the destruction wrought and turn with nerveless hands to the work of restoration. Has the war paid? That depends. If the transform ing ideals which inspired the will to conquer shall fade away, if the determination to rid the world of evil heritages and to give it a new start in freedom Shall be swallowed up in the maws of selfish interests; if, after all that has been done, nothing is left, after a while, but the same old world of international strife, a world of stark-naked materialism in which ancient wrongs, forgetfulness of God, and deification of the Strong, Shall again blur justice and the sense of human brotherhood, then the war has not paid. The Christian Man, the Church and the War (Classic Reprint) by Robert E. Speer Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Man, the Church and the War There are three difierent courses open to the Christian man to-day. One is to throw his Christian idealism overboard, and post pone his effort to adjust religion to life until the war is over. A second is to hold fast to his Christian idealism and to repudiate the real world he is living in. The third is to take Paul's counsel and seek to behave as a citizen in a manner worthy of the Gospel, be lieving that his present duty is to be a Chris tian not in some other world but in this one, and that this duty can be done in the highest loyalty both to humanity and to Christ. This little book is an attempt at a statement of this third course. If the attempt is not a success, neither is life. Papers for War Time by William Temple Pdf

Excerpt from Papers for War Time: Christianity and War Great britain is engaged in a war from which, as we believe, there was offered to our nation no honourable way of escape. The desire of all who love their country is to serve it in the hour of its need, and so to live and labour that those who have fallen in its service may not have died in vain. While this may suffice to make immediate duty clear, the war remains in the deepest sense a challenge to Christian thought. The present bitter struggle between nations which for centuries have borne the Christian name indicates some deep-seated failure to understand the principles of Christ and to apply them to human affairs. This series of papers embodies an attempt to reach, by common thought, discussion and prayer, a truer understanding of the meaning of Christianity and of the mission of the Church to the individual, to society and to the world. War-Time Agencies of the Churches by Margaret Renton Pdf

Excerpt from War-Time Agencies of the Churches: Directory and Handbook The handbook which follows gives a brief record of the war activities of the different denominational and interchurch agencies engaged in war work. It is an attempt to bring together in a single volume, information as to the war work of the Christian Church not otherwise readily accessible. While necessarily confining itself to agencies of an official character, denominational and interdenominational, and leaving for a later volume the more complete interpretation of the war work of the Church as a whole, it is hoped that it may serve a useful purpose by showing how the Churches severally and in cooperation met the new responsibilities and opportunities of service created by the war. The organizations whose work is here described are primarily those which have cooperated in the General War-Time Commission of the Churches. For purposes of completeness, however, a brief record has been included of the war work of other religious bodies which have functioned through war commissions or war organizations. Agencies of a more philanthropic nature, such as the Red Cross and the War Camp Community Service, have not been included, although no story of the Church's activity would be complete which did not include the record of what its members have done in and through these agencies.
