African American Literature and the Classicist Tradition by T. Walters Pdf

This is a groundbreaking study exploring the significant relationship between western classical mythology and African American women's literature. A comparative analysis of classical revisions by eighteenth and nineteenth century Black women writers Phillis Wheatley and Pauline Hopkins and twentieth century writers Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, and Rita Dove reveals that Black women writers revise specific classical myths for artistic and political agency. The study demonstrates that women rework myth to represent mythical stories from the Black female perspective and to counteract denigrating contemporary cultural and social myths that disempower and devalue Black womanhood. Through their adaptations of classical myths about motherhood, Wheatley, Ray, Brooks, Morrison, and Dove uncover the shared experiences of mythic mothers and their contemporary African American counterparts thus offering a unique Black feminist perspective to classicism. The women also use myth as a liberating space where they can 'speak the unspeakable' and empower their subjects as well as themselves.

African Americans and the Classics by Margaret Malamud Pdf

A new wave of research in black classicism has emerged in the 21st century that explores the role played by the classics in the larger cultural traditions of black America, Africa and the Caribbean. Addressing a gap in this scholarship, Margaret Malamud investigates why and how advocates for abolition and black civil rights (both black and white) deployed their knowledge of classical literature and history in their struggle for black liberty and equality in the United States. African Americans boldly staked their own claims to the classical world: they deployed texts, ideas and images of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt in order to establish their authority in debates about slavery, race, politics and education. A central argument of this book is that knowledge and deployment of Classics was a powerful weapon and tool for resistance-as improbable as that might seem now-when wielded by black and white activists committed to the abolition of slavery and the end of the social and economic oppression of free blacks. The book significantly expands our understanding of both black history and classical reception in the United States.

The Ideology of Classicism by Nicolas Wiater Pdf

So far, the critical writings of Dionysius of Halicarnassus have mainly attracted interest from historians of ancient linguistics. The Ideology of Classicism proposes a novel approach to Dionysius’ œuvre as a whole by providing the first systematic study of Greek classicism from the perspective of cultural identity. Drawing on cultural anthropology and Social Identity Theory, Wiater explores the world-view bound up with classicist criticism. Only from within this ideological framework can we understand why Greek and Roman intellectuals in Augustan Rome strove to speak and write like Demosthenes, Lysias, and Isocrates. Topics addressed by this study include Dionysius’ view of the classical past; mimesis and the aesthetics of reading; language and identity; Dionysius’ view of the Romans, their power and the role of Greek culture within it; Greek classicism and the contemporary controversy about Roman identity among Roman intellectuals; the self-image as Greek intellectuals in the Roman empire of Dionysius and his addressees; the dialogic design of Dionysius’ essays and how it implements a sense of elitism and distinction; Dionysius’ attitudes towards communities competing with him for leadership in rhetorical education and criticism, such as the Peripatetics and Stoics.

American Classicist by Elizabeth Meredith Dowling Pdf

First published in 1989, this updated edition celebrates this seminal American architect. Between 1912 and 1968, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because he was so prolific, the book examines only his most essential work, which as a body represents an architec-tural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed one year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize, traveling shortly thereafter to Rome. There he remained for five years, learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. On his return to the U.S., Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose master-piece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia, to design in the Classical and traditional styles some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

The Classical Orders of Architecture by Robert Chitham Pdf

"The recent revival of interest in classical architecture needs to be matched by a high degree of literacy in the use of the orders if it is to be taken seriously. Presenting a modern interpretation of renaissance rules of proportion, the second edition of this successful title now includes both 100-part (metric) and 96-part (imperial) systems of proportioning the orders. These are underpinned by an essay, written by Calder Loth, on James Gibbs, 18th century architect and inventor of a new fractional system of proportions, and his influence on American classical architecture. With the inclusion of additional plates, the book provides a clear introduction and valuable guidance to assist architects and designers with the basic grammar of classical design"--Back cover.
