In the 1st part to this 3 part trilogy suspense thriller, Alison, a housewife, of a local mortician, Sean, lose their youngest son, Tyler, to a fatal accident at their home. Trying her best to care for her other 2 children; Amy, which is a 10 year old adopted girl who has been passed from home to home and Caleb, which is 14 and has a mental disability. She begins taking anti-depressant pills to deal with the pain, but once more unexplained tragedies start occurring inside their home; Sean starts to wonder if this is an unfortunate display of the families bad luck, or if it is a mix of Alison losing herself from the strength of the medication and her power to cope with their son being gone. Between the madness of eerie events that are happening to the family it makes Chief Murdells job that much harder in trying to bring truth to the grizzly case.

This story follows the last book of, "The Closest Stranger" when Amy Hill is released from Oakcrest Mental Institution. After spending her whole teenage life under the instituions control without a clue of why she was there in the first place; she finds herself now having to fend for herself in the real world without any knowledge of how life is supposed to go. After a few days of struggling on her own she decides to search for answers by finding her birth parents. She discovers her decision was probably not the best choice to make as she starts to reveal disturbing secrets of her family as her own demons start to surface.

After a life-time filled with abuse and being used by the world she lives in; Amy lands herself back into the institutions care hoping to live out the rest of her days alone and in peace. It all changes when a somebody from her past comes back years after she was reinstituionalized to seek revenge for his family. He gets more then he bargains for once he finds her and it causes her to flip back into her old mind set of who she used to be. After escaping from the instituion's walls she tries to find David, her pyschiatrist, to help her, but once she finds him she soon realizes he too has been keeping his own secrets from her. Amy now must make a decision to turn herself back into the hands of the institution which has lied to her since a teenager or take control of the situation and make her own destiny.
