The Cobbler's Daughter by Catherine Cookson Pdf

Suddenly risen to power and influence, Samuel Fairbrother, manufacturer and retailer of boots, shoes and clogs, decided that his new station in life deserved a more imposing residence. Accordingly he bought himself a thirty-four-roomed mansion situated on the outskirts of Fellburn. With the house came the butler, Maitland, who at once made plain his belief that Samuel, far from the gentleman his predecessor had been, was no more than an upstart. So began a clash of wills between master and man, at which Samuel Fairbrother discovered he was at a distinct disadvantage, for Maitland was well skilled in the art of maintaining his indispensability. Fairbrother, for his part, was only too aware that he dare not dispence with Maitland's services. And so an uneasy truce was declared between them. As the years went by and the century turned, Samuel Fairbrother saw his children, one by one, leave the big house to make lives for their own--all except his eldest daughter Janet who, by means of a legacy, was enabled to shape the destiny of her father's scattered family and effect the reconciliation that he thought was impossible.

The Nineteenth-Century Child and Consumer Culture by Dennis Denisoff Pdf

During the rise of consumer culture in the nineteenth century, children and childhood were called on to fulfill a range of important roles. In addition to being consumers themselves, the young functioned as both 'goods' to be used and consumed by adults and as proof that middle-class materialist ventures were assisting in the formation of a more ethical society. Children also provided necessary labor and raw material for industry. This diverse collection addresses the roles assigned to children in the context of nineteenth-century consumer culture, at the same time that it remains steadfast in recognizing that the young did not simply exist within adult-articulated cultural contexts but were agents in their formation. Topics include toys and middle-class childhood; boyhood and toy theater; child performers on the Victorian stage; gender, sexuality and consumerism; imperialism in adventure fiction; the idealization of childhood as a form of adult entertainment and self-flattery; the commercialization of orphans; and the economics behind formulations of child poverty. Together, the essays demonstrate the rising investment both children and adults made in commodities as sources of identity and human worth.

The Cobbler's Left Thumb by James Dikin Pdf

Progress...Not So Much In times past, the shoemaker, or cobbler, was as important as a cooper (barrel maker), blacksmith, lumberman, or cattleman. In fact, maybe he was more important since all the other trades needed his services to perform theirs. Everyone needed shoes, but where would the lumberman be without proper boots, belts, and suspenders? How about the chaps the range riders used to protect their legs from briars and thistles? Halters, bridles, reigns, buggy whips, and saddles were just some of the products a cobbler would produce. And in time they would all need repair. Gloves and many types of protective gear were made of leather. Hides were abundantly available from buffalo, bison, deer, elk, and smaller animals, such as rabbit, raccoon, fox, coyote, wolf, and other small species. Many cobblers were artists with the ability to transform raw material into something beautiful and comfortable with the expertise of a tailor or dressmaker. Doctors would write prescriptions for special attention in balancing a patient's stand by modifying their shoes. And someone had to be able to change the color of a leather product to comply with a customer's needs. This book opens the door on the private lives of two cobblers. My father and grandfather enjoyed the work they did, and as world production of inexpensive and inferior shoes took over the market, they found it too costly to compete. Aurel Dikin Sr. was the younger, but taller of the two shoemakers. The stories are my parents' stories, which I promised I would put together and share in my memory and love for them. Both have passed away years ago, and I'm honored to share their memories.

THE FAIRY LATCHKEY - a Fantasy Tale for Children by Magdalene Horsfall Pdf

Philomene Isolde has been lonely little girl since the death of her mother. More often than not her father, a hard working doctor, calls her “Little Miss Muffet.” One day she is out in the garden playing make-believe. She aimlessly picked a dandelion and started to daydream about the times when she and her mother used to play “tell the time” when a voice beside her said “If you would be so good to tell me the right time.” Startled she dropped her “clock” and the little man in a vivid green suit picked it up and blew on it. “Five ‘o Clock” he said. Then out of his waistcoat pocket he took a key, which he fitted into the key-hole in the wall. A little stone door swung outwards in the wall, and the mannikin hesitated upon the threshold. “All things considered,” he remarked slowly, “and especially the green ribbons, I think I may do myself the pleasure of asking you to step in.” ……and so begins the adventures of Philomene in Fairyland. A place where she meets Sweet William, Master Mustardseed, Mermaids and Mermen, the Twin-Sisters and Queen Mab the cat. But what are all her adventures and experiences for? Well, you’ll have to download this story and find out for yourself. Or, if you’re too young to read, you’ll have to ask your mother or father to download it and read it to you at bedtime. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ================= KEYWORDS/TABS – The Fairy Latchkey, fairy tales, folklore, children’s stories, myths and legends, fables, Mother, Father, cat, lonely, heroine, godmother, key-hole, wall, latchkey, sweet William, distinguish, advice, master, mustardseed, birthday, letter, introduction, present, good fortune, merman, storyteller, twin sisters, startling news, scene, sick-room, queen mab, make friends, white létiche, herald, change, little man, vivid green suit, elf, riding, lizard, baby, kiss, live, underwater, werewolf, witch, bedside, small figurine, Speedwell, Spirea, Cushats,
