Nuclear Physics by Arthur S. Wightman Pdf

Eugene Wigner was undoubtedly one of the pioneers of nuclear physics. He covered the whole range from nuclear engineering (Volume 5 of his Collected Works) right down to basic theoretical work. This volume collects his articles devoted to the latter. It has been edited by Arthur Wightman and Herman Feshbach who also wrote the annotation to Wigner's milestone accomplishments in this field of modern physics.

Nuclear Energy by Alvin M. Weinberg Pdf

Eugene Wigner is one of the very few scientists that may safely be describedas creators of 20th-century physics. This volume of his Collected Works is devoted to his contributions to nuclear energy. In his Introduction and Annotations A.M. Weinberg surveys Wigner's contributions to nuclear-reaction physics and nuclear engineering, at the same time giving a glimpse of the early history of nuclear-reactor technology. Wigner himself gave a lively and critical account, which is published in this volume for the first time. Furthermore the book contains forty-two reports and memoranda from 1941 to 1945 and twelve of Wigner's many patents relating to nuclear energy.

The Collected Works of Eugene Paul Wigner by Eugene Paul Wigner,Arthur S. Wightman Pdf

The fourth volume of the Collected Works is devoted to Wigner's contribution to physical chemistry, statistical mechanics and solid-state physics. In his annotation to the first part, N. Balazs clearly points out Wigner's role in early quantum chemistry and applied statistical mechanics. One corner stone was his introducing of what is now called the Wigner function, and his paper on adiabatic perturbations foreshadowed later work on Berry phases. Although few in number, Wigner's articles on solid-state physics laid the ground for the modern theory of the electronic structure of metals. W. Kohn writes about this in his annotation to Part 2 of the book and he also points out Wigner's great influence in the development of solid-state theory.

Part I: Particles and Fields. Part II: Foundations of Quantum Mechanics by Arthur S. Wightman Pdf

The first part of this third volume of Wigner's Collected Works is devoted to his analysis of symmetries in quantum mechanics, of the relativistic wave equations, of relativistic particle theory, and of field theory. It is introduced by the masterly annotation of Arthur S. Wightman. Abner Shimony annotates the second part where the reader will find Wigner's contributions to the foundations of quantum physics and to the problems of measurement.
