The Collected Works of James Branch Cabell. Illustrated by James Cabell Pdf

James Branch was an American author of fantasy fiction and belles-lettres. Cabell was well-regarded by his contemporaries, including H. L. Mencken, Edmund Wilson, and Sinclair Lewis. His works were considered escapist. Although escapist, Cabell's works are ironic and satirical. Cabell's best-known book is Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice. The eponymous hero, who considers himself a "monstrous clever fellow", embarks on a journey through ever more fantastic realms, even to hell and heaven. Everywhere he goes, he winds up seducing the local women, even the Devil's wife. A great deal of Cabell's work has focused on the Biography of the Life of Manuel, the story of a character named Dom Manuel and his descendants through many generations. Many of these books take place in the fictional country eventually ruled by Manuel, known as "Poictesme". Several other books take place in the fictional town of Lichfield, Virginia. His later novel, The First Gentleman of America: A Comedy of Conquest, retells the strange career of an American Indian from the shores of the Potomac who sailed away with Spanish explorers, later to return, be made chief of his tribe, and kill all the Spaniards in the new Virginia settlement. Cabell also wrote a number of autobiographical and genealogical works. The Eagle’s Shadow The Line of Love Gallantry The Cords of Vanity Chivalry The Soul of Melicent The Rivet in Grandfather’s Neck The Certain Hour From the Hidden Way The Cream of the Jest Some Ladies and Jurgen Beyond Life Jurgen The Judging of Jurgen Figures of Earth Taboo The Jewel Merchants The Lineage of Lichfield The High Place Straws and Prayer-Books

Domnei by James Branch Cabell Pdf

Domnei by James Branch Cabell is the fourth installment in his Biography of the Life of Manuel series, which follows the lives of Dom Manuel and his descendants in the fictional French county of Poictesme. It was initially published as The Soul of Melicent in 1913 under the erroneous advice of Cabell’s publisher, who suggested that the title would help sell more copies. But only 493 copies were sold of the original print run. In 1920 the book was republished as Domnei: A Comedy of Woman-Worship, Cabell’s original vision for the title. The story follows Perion de la Forêt, fugitive leader of a mercenary troop, and his unbridled passion for his newly-wed and newly-distant lover, the Princess Melicent, daughter of Dom Manuel. The tale takes us to many locations in Middle-Ages Europe as we witness to what extent men will go to pursue a woman’s love.

Figures Of Earth A Comedy Of Appearances by James Branch Cabell Pdf

James Branch Cabell's fantasy book "Figures of Earth: A Comedy of Appearances" was published. It was included in Cabell's longer work, "The Biography of Manuel," which was published in 1921. Dom Manuel, the main character of the book, is a nobleman who lives in mediaeval Poictesme. The story follows his life and exploits. Manuel finds a mystical clay figure that comes to life and assumes the shape of a stunning woman named Niafer. This is how the story goes. The book chronicles Manuel's adventures as he rises to prominence, goes on expeditions, and runs into otherworldly creatures. Manuel ponders issues related to identity, meaning, and the nature of reality during the narrative. "Figures of Earth" is renowned for its philosophical implications and complex prose. In a multilayered story that defies categorization, Cabell tackles issues of love, ambition, and the pursuit of purpose in life. The book delves deeply into the human condition while also making sarcastic observations about society conventions. Cabell's work was sometimes criticized for what was seen as its irreverence, yet "Figures of Earth" is praised for its creative storytelling and literary experimentation. The book, which highlights Cabell's distinctive style and his contribution to the genre, is regarded as a masterpiece of American fantasy literature.
