In a former letter, you will remember, I likened our present suffering to a case of appendicitis, that society suffers from the trouble set up within by an organ which has lost its function and needs to be cut out. Perhaps I might better liken society to a woman in the travail of childbirth, suffering the pangs of labor incidental to the deliverance of the new life within her womb. The trust 93 marks the highest development of capitalist society: it can go no further. The Old Order changeth, yielding place to new. And the new order, waiting now for deliverance from the womb of the old, is Socialism, the fraternal state. Whether the birth of the new order is to be peaceful or violent and painful, whether it will be ushered in with glad shouts of triumphant men and women, or with the noise of civil strife, depends, my good friend, upon the manner in which you and all other workers discharge your responsibilities as citizens. That is why I am so anxious to set the claims of Socialism clearly before you: I want you to work for the peaceful revolution of society, Jonathan. For the present, I am only going to ask you to read a little five cent pamphlet, by Gaylord Wilshire, called The Significance of the Trust, and a little book by Frederick Engels, called Socialism, Utopian and Scientific. John Spargo (1876-1966) was a British progressivist writer and muckraker whose expose The Bitter Cry of Children explores the living conditions of children in poverty stricken households. As a young man he trained as a stonecutter, and became a lay Methodist minister. He was attracted to the socialist doctrines of early English marxist Henry Hyndman and would serve on the executive council of the Social Democratic Federation before immigrating to New York City in 1901, and to Vermont in 1909. He became a leader of the Socialist Party of America and wrote an early English-language biography of Karl Marx. Later, he formed the Social Democratic League of America. He would become the Director-Curator of the Bennington, Vermont Historical Museum and write several books on ceramics. He researched and wrote a booklet on the history of his family name. He also wrote Socialism: A Summary and Interpretation of Socialist Principles (1906), The Common Sense of Socialism (1908), Bolshevism: The Enemy of Political and Industrial Democracy (1919) and The Marx He Knew (1909).

You could not easily have conferred greater pleasure upon me than you have by the charming candor and vigor of your letter. It is said that when President Lincoln saw Walt Whitman, "the good. Gray Poet," for the first time he exclaimed, "Well, he looks like a man!" and in like spirit, when I read your letter I could not help exclaiming, "Well, he writes like a man!" There was no need, Mr. Edwards, for you to apologize for your letter: for its faulty grammar, its lack of "style" and "polish." That they sometimes - as in America - are working hand in hand with Anarchists, is not due to a conformity of convictions, but to the circumstance, that both parties are in a minority. But, as a matter of fact, Socialism is directly opposed to Anarchism. As the old party-lines are obliterated more and more, a new cleavage of society takes place, determined by opinion upon social subjects, of which so-called political questions form only a part. On one side will range themselves the forces of Anar chism together with that conservative Individualism which declines to interfere for the preservation of the common wealth, and prefers to let matters drift into the state which the Anarchists are endeavouring to produce by action. The other side will be held by Socialism, the only really constructive force, reinforced by the enlightened conservatism of common sense, which has the courage to sacrifice the semblance for the substance and, if necessary, the part for the whole.
