The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton (Classic Reprint) by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton WE are aided in the study of Milton's life by the sharpness of line which separates the three main epochs of his history: his life of student ease, during which he was preparing himself with consecration for his poetic vocation; his life of public service, when he put behind him his poetic ambitions and threw himself with fanatical ardor into the struggle for liberty; and his old age, when, blind and discredited, he sat down amid the wreck of everything for which he had given his best twenty years, to write the poem which from early youth he had felt it his mis sion to leave to the nation. Milton's youth was singularly sweet and Sheltered. He was born in London on the 9th of December, 1608, the son of John Milton, a scrivener or solicitor do ing business at the Sign of the Spread Eagle in Bread Street. It is worth noting that for two generations at least the Miltons had exhibited intense partisanship in the religious disputes which agitated the nation. Richard Milton, the poet's grand father, had been a stubborn Catholic recusant under Elizabeth, and John Milton, the poet's father, had broken with his family in order to join the Puritans. The Puri tanism of the home in Bread Street was not, however, of an ascetic or unlovely type. The father was an accomplished musician, of some note as a composer, and could even on occasion try his hand at poetry. This mellow atmosphere of taste and cultivation, spiritualized by a sincere piety, united with larger circumstances to enrich life for the young poet. We must remember that in Milton's childhood Shakespeare was still alive, that at the Mermaid Tavern, probably in the very street where the scrivener's house stood, Ben Jonson held his merry meetings, and that most of the stalwart figures which had made the reign of the Virgin Queen illustrious were still to be seen about the streets of London. There was as yet hardly a hint of the passing away of those spacious times, of the spirit of romance and adventure, which had filled Elizabethan England. His nature, there fore, was in no danger of being starved at the outset, as it must have been if his birth had fallen a few decades farther on in the struggle between the old and the new, when Puritanism had narrowed and hardened itself in order to project itself more forcibly against its enemies. Lexicon to the English Poetical Works of John Milton (Classic Reprint) by Laura Emma Lockwood Pdf

Excerpt from Lexicon to the English Poetical Works of John Milton This book was begun in 1895, and the first one hundred and seventy pages were in 1898 presented to the Philosophical Faculty of Yale University as a doctoral thesis. These pages were also, during the latter year, put through the press. In 1902 the work was resumed on the book, and it is but now brought to completion. The long time intervening between the beginning and end will account for some slight differences in form and treatment between the first and last parts. In the arrangement and classification of meanings I have chiefly followed the New English Dictionary. Every occurrence of each word is recorded, except in the case of certain words that appear very frequently; these are given in all their meanings, but starred to show that not every instance under each category is noted. Recognizing the fact that a grammar of Milton is also needed, I have included some grammatical observations looking toward such a book; but the treatment of the syntax does not pretend to be complete. I have noted the accent of words where it differs from the modern prose accent. I have used the text of the Globe edition, retaining the modern spelling, because the book is primarily intended for those who to-day care to understand the thought of Milton. I have added the bit of translation from Ariosto. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Poetical Works of John Milton (Classic Reprint) by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton Milton's original intention was to have visited Sicily and Greece, but he says, The sad news of civil war coming from England called me back; for I considered it disgraceful that, while my fellow-countrymen were fighting at home for liberty, I should be travelling abroad at ease for intellectual purposes. From Naples he returned' to Rome, where he again spent two months, and arrived once more in Florence towards the end of February 1639. After a short excursion to Lucca, he set out for Venice, crossing the Apennines, and passing through Bologna and Ferrara. His residence in the island-built city was of short duration; there be shipped for England the rare and curious books which he had collected in his travels up and down the Peninsula. His course next lay through the fertile plains and famous towns of Lombardy, over the Pennine Alps, and along Lake Leman to Geneva, where he stayed for a week or two, to enjoy the society of the most learned professor of theology, John Diodati, uncle of his friend Charles, who had just recently died. Resuming his homeward journey, he passed rapidly through France, and landed in England about the beginning of autumn, after an absence of fifteen months. During all his wanderings his conduct had been blameless - worthy of him who thought no man should dare to be a poet whose life was not itself a poem. I take God to witness, he solemnly affirms, that in all those places where so many things are considered law. Ful, I lived sound and untouched from all pro igacy and vice, hav ing this thought perpetually With me, that though I might escape the eyes of men, I certainly could not the eyes of God. A Concordance to the Poetical Works of John Milton (Classic Reprint) by John Bradshaw Pdf

Excerpt from A Concordance to the Poetical Works of John Milton The only Concordance to Milton's Poetical Works that has yet appeared is that by the late Mr. Guy Lushington Prendergast of the Madras Civil Service, published at Madras in 1857. The edition was small, and it has long been out of print. Unfortunately, too, the editing seems to have been left to the printers, who apparently cut off from either end of a quotation such words as would not fit into a line of the Concordance, thus rendering it necessary for one consulting the work to refer in most cases to the passage in Milton; there are also many errors in it owing to the fact that to copyists as well as to compositors English was a foreign language. In 1867 Mr. C. D. Cleveland, of Philadelphia, published in England a small work entitled A Complete Concordance to the Poetical Works of John Milton (london, Sampson Low), but it was merely a verbal index, a first edition of which had appeared in Cleveland's edition of Milton's Poetical Works, published in America in 1854. Previous to this there was Todd's Verbal Index, appended to his edition of Milton's Poetical Works in 1809; but in it, according to Cleveland, there are over three thousand mistakes. In the present Concordance I have followed the text of the new Aldine Edition of Milton's Poetical Works, edited by me this year for Messrs. George Bell Sons, which was carefully revised from my edition of Milton's Poetical Works, published by W. H. Allen Co. In 1877 and 1885. The Poetical Works of John Milton by John Milton Pdf

Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton: With a Life of the Author, Preliminary Dissertations on Each Poem, Notes Critical and Explanatory, an Index to the Subjects of Paradise Lost, and a Verbal Index to All the PoemsAny attempt, however humble, to make the Poems of Milton more widely circulated, intelligently read, and wisely appre cisted, needs no apology. I may state, however, the simple incident to which the present edition owes its origin. Five years ago, when preparing my Compendium of English Li terature, I had occasion to look at Todd's Verbal Index to Milton, in connection with Lycidas, and found the first two references to which I turned, to be wrong. Surprised at this, I soon after, at my leisure, compared every word in Lycidas with this Index, and found, in its references to that short poem of one hundred and ninety-three lines, sixty-three mistakes! This discovery made me resolve to prepare, as early as my numerous engagements would permit, an edition of Milton's Poems, withan Index subjoined on which some reliance for accuracy might be placed. But though I began the examination of Todd's Index more than three years ago, so laborious has been the work that I have been able but recently to bring it to a close. The result is, that, after two careful examinations, (in the first of which I was assisted, in some portions, by two or three literary friends, ) there have been found three thousand three hundred and sixty-two mistakes! This I could scarcely believe, had I not marked the number on each page at its foot, and had not the careful addition of the figures brought about the astound ing result; so that, on the whole, the work of examining and comparing Todd's Index has been about equivalent to that of making out, independently, an entirely new one. I need hardly say how richly I have been repaid for my labour, in my constant communings, day by day, with the mind of the whose astonishing learning and genius have cited in me fresh admiration and delight. N 0 work could more amply bring with it its own rich reward.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
