Non-native Species and Their Role in the Environment by Radu Cornel Guiaşu Pdf

The role of non-native species in their new environments is one of the central issues in conservation biology and ecology today. This book presents a comprehensive evolutionary exploration of the complex and dynamic interactions between introduced species and native ones, and shows that non-native species can bring useful and important contributions to novel ecosystems. Based on a wide variety of examples and case studies, a strong case is made for a more positive and objective approach to non-native species and a greater appreciation of the valuable ecosystem services they provide.

Aquatic Synthesis for Voyageurs National Park by Anonim Pdf

Voyageurs National Park (VOYA) in northern Minnesota contains significant aquatic resources including 30 lakes and numerous wetlands. This synthesis contains an integrated account of what is known about the aquatic resources of VOYA; compares VOYA resources to those of other areas; and identifies opportunities and needs for future studies and surveys. Surveys and studies in VOYA have identified fifty-four fish species from 16 families 820 vascular plant species and 7 amphibian and 3 reptile species (higher numbers probably occur). Estimates of relative abundance for phyto- and zooplankton vary among VOYA lakes and depths surveyed. The VOYA fish populations and communities have been the most intensively studied. Twenty-eight percent of VOYA wetlands are the result of beaver activity. Mercury contamination and its food-chain bioaccumulation in VOYA are of particular concern. An integrated monitoring plan is needed in VOYA to provide continuous data and information on the complex physical chemical, and biological factors that influence aquatic systems. Resource managers in VOYA will use this information to understand and explain observed changes and to predict the potential for future changes.

The Eel by F. Tesch Pdf

by Dr P .H. Greenwood British Museum (Natural History), London Dr Tesch's wide ranging account of anguillid eels impinges on the interests of many biologists; it is not simply a specialized tome narrowly aimed at ichthyologists and fishery scientists, rather it provides a source of primary reference and a comprehensive sununary of informa tion that is not likely to be superseded for a long time. It is significant that the bibliography includes references to learned journals concerned with physiology, pharmacology, taxonomy, genetics, zoology, endo crinology, botany, ecology and environmental interactions. Such is the breadth of interest in the Anguillidae. Few fish species have been subjected to as detailed review as Dr Tesch gives for the (wo Atlantic species of Anguilla. An equally comprehensive resume of research into the fourteen, rather less well-studied Indo Pacific species gives balance and reciprocal illumination to several biological problems posed by these similar but quite distinctive species.

Diseases of Carp and Other Cyprinid Fishes by David Hoole,David Bucke,Peter Burgess,Ian Wellby Pdf

Cyprinids rank as one of the most commercially important groups of freshwater fishes and are exploited for many purposes; as a human food source, especially in Europe and Asia; as sport fish; and as ornamental fish for ponds and aquaria. Certain species are also cultured as bait fish and several of the small cyprinids such as the zebra fish have become internationally accepted laboratory models for toxicology testing and molecular research. A thorough understanding of cyprinid health and diseases is fundamental to the successful management and exploitation of these fishes for freshwater fisheries, pisciculture and ornamental productions. This practical guide to disease diagnosis, prevention and control includes numerous colour plates and covers a comprehensive array of diseases - infectious and non-infectious - of cultivated and wild cyprinids.
