The Cone Sisters of Baltimore by Ellen B. Hirschland,Nancy Hirschland Ramage Pdf

They were friends with Picasso and Matisse. They ran in the same circles as Gertrude and Leo Stein. They avidly purchased works by Manet, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat, and Degas at a time when other Americans didn't. They were two Victorian women from Baltimore buying avant-garde art in Paris, attending salons with friends, and building a collection that would initially puzzle and eventually awe the art world. Over a period of fifty years, sisters Caribel and Etta Cone amassed one of the most acclaimed collections of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century art in America. Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta were two halves of an idiosyncratic team who used the fortures of their German Jewish immigrant family to seek out works that imspired and pleased them, regardless of public opinion. This richly illustrated biography documents their lives from a unique perspective: that of their great-niece and their great-great-niece. Ellen B. Hirschland and her daughter Nancy Hirschland Ramage delve into Claribel's and Etta's world, following the sisters through letters and personal stories as they travel to meet the artists whose work would turn their adjoining apartments into a virtual museum. The sisters' experiences in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s provide an exceptional view of the bright artistic ferment in the city at that time. Only time would vindicate their keen vision and unwavering taste.

A Modern Influence by Baltimore Museum of Art,Oliver Shell,Thomas Primeau,Kristin Ross,Jay McKean Fisher Pdf

"This exhibition explores the 43-year friendship between artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Baltimore collector Etta Cone (1870-1949). More than 160 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and illustrated books provide new insights into the formation of the renowned Cone Collection, one of the greatest collections of modern art in the United States. Etta, with her older sister Claribel (1864-1929), acquired more than 700 works by Matisse between 1906 and 1949 and bequeathed the majority of them to the BMA as part of a gift of 3,000 objects. Etta's dedication and curiosity ultimately lent the Cone collection its characteristic depth and breadth. After accepting Etta's invitation to visit her in Baltimore in 1930, Matisse realized he could have a major U.S. presence, and began creating and offering Etta specific works of art with the Cone collection in mind." Among these works are masterpieces such as The Yellow Dress (1929-31) and Large Reclining Nude (1935), rarely shown drawings, and the preliminary studies for his first illustrated book, Poems by Stéphane Mallarmé (1932). The works in the exhibition are generally arranged by acquisition date, demonstrating Cone's increasingly discerning eye for Matisse's work throughout their long partnership. A fully illustrated catalog accompanying the exhibition contains new scholarship on the formal, technical, and social aspects of the decades-long working partnership between artist and patron.

Matisse in the Cone Collection by Jack D. Flam,Baltimore Museum of Art Pdf

"Matisse in The Cone Collection: The Poetics of Vision is an exploration of the artist's work through the rich holdings of The Baltimore Museum of Art - one of the most comprehensive collections of Matisse's art in the world. The Cone sisters, Claribel and Etta, acquired their first works by Henri Matisse in 1906 and, over the next four decades, went on to collect major examples from almost every phase of his long career. Although best known for his vibrant paintings of exotically dressed young models and lush interiors, Matisse also worked in sculpture and drawing, often using these mediums to explore a single artistic idea in various ways. As revealed in The Cone Collection, Matisse expressed his love of color, texture, and pattern throughout a career that spanned many styles, from Impressionism to near abstraction."--Jacket.

The Art of Acquiring by Mary Gabriel Pdf

For four and a half decades, Etta and Claribel Cone roamed artists' studios and art galleries in Europe, building one of the largest, most important art collections in the world. At one time, these two independently wealthy Jewish women from Baltimore received offers from virtually every prominent art museum in the world, all anxious to house their hitherto private assemblage of modern art. In 1949, they awarded all their holdings to the Baltimore Museum of Art. In 2002, that collection was valued at nearly $1 billion, making them two of the most philanthropic art collectors of our age.Yet, for complex reasons, the story of the Cone sisters has never been fully or accurately told.Mary Gabriel, an art-minded journalist and women's historian, has, at long last, brought the little-known sisters to life, and shone the spotlight on their remarkable achievements.

Miss Etta and Dr. Claribel by Susan Fillion Pdf

What could be more unlikely than this tale of two unmarried sisters from a German-Jewish family in Baltimore amassing one of the major collections of modern art in America? But Etta and Claribel Cone saw the potential of young artists like Matisse and Picasso when few people in America even knew they existed. Etta fell in love with art on her first trip to Italy under the encouragement of Leo Stein. During their travels, the sisters began amassing Japanese prints, antiques, and textiles. Buying without professional counsel, trusting their eyes and instincts, they soon were concentrating on the avant garde, befriending and supporting artists, and building one of the foremost collections of Matisse's work in the world. In this touching story, fully illustrated with the work they collected-Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Gauguin-we can trace the contours of their lives, made more vivid by the colorful paintings.

The Essence of Line by Jay McKean Fisher,David P. Becker,Baltimore Museum of Art,Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, Md.),Birmingham Museum of Art (Birmingham, Ala.) Pdf

Rarely seen drawings and watercolors by some of the most influential French artists of the nineteenth century are the subject of this richly illustrated publication from The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum. From revealing preparatory sketches to exquisite finished watercolors, more than 100 works by artists such as Eugene Delacroix, Honore Daumier, Paul Cezanne, and Edgar Degas illuminate the range of French art over the course of a century of innovation. The BMA and the Walters have combined holdings of more than 900 French drawings from the nineteenth century, one of the nation's strongest and richest collections of French art from this period. The publication also includes works from the Peabody Institute Art Collection of the Maryland State Archives. The Essence of Line offers the first comprehensive discussion of the formation of these collections and their significance for the history of French art. The catalogue includes essays by Jay McKean Fisher, William R. Johnston, and Cheryl K. Snay that provide insights into the artistic, commercial, and social functions that drawings served for their creators and collectors, as well as how collecting patterns influenced the development of modernism. Conservator Kimberly Schenck bridges the worlds of the collector and of the artist by examining the production and the use of drawing materials in an epoch of radical changes in technique as well as style. Published on the occasion of an exhibition jointly organized by The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum, this book presents a panorama of sketches, watercolors, and presentation drawings, many of them little known outside a small circle of experts. It is correlated with an online database of more than 900 nineteenth-century French drawings in the holdings of these Baltimore museums.

The Fires of Vesuvius by Mary Beard Pdf

Pompeii is the most famous archaeological site in the world, visited by more than two million people each year. Yet it is also one of the most puzzling, with an intriguing and sometimes violent history, from the sixth century BCE to the present day. Destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 CE, the ruins of Pompeii offer the best evidence we have of life in the Roman Empire. But the eruptions are only part of the story. In The Fires of Vesuvius, acclaimed historian Mary Beard makes sense of the remains. She explores what kind of town it was—more like Calcutta or the Costa del Sol?—and what it can tell us about “ordinary” life there. From sex to politics, food to religion, slavery to literacy, Beard offers us the big picture even as she takes us close enough to the past to smell the bad breath and see the intestinal tapeworms of the inhabitants of the lost city. She resurrects the Temple of Isis as a testament to ancient multiculturalism. At the Suburban Baths we go from communal bathing to hygiene to erotica. Recently, Pompeii has been a focus of pleasure and loss: from Pink Floyd’s memorable rock concert to Primo Levi’s elegy on the victims. But Pompeii still does not give up its secrets quite as easily as it may seem. This book shows us how much more and less there is to Pompeii than a city frozen in time as it went about its business on 24 August 79.

Enchanted Lives, Enchanted Objects by Dianne Sachko Macleod Pdf

This insightful and beautifully illustrated book offers the first feminist analysis of the phenomenon of women art collectors in America. Dianne Sachko Macleod brings a surprising paradox to light, showing that collecting, which provided wealthy women with a private sense of solace, also liberated them to venture into the public sphere and make a lasting contribution to the emerging American culture. Beginning in the antebellum period, continuing through the Gilded Age, and reaching well into the twentieth century, Macleod shows how elite women enlisted the objets d'art and avant-garde paintings in their collections in causes ranging from the founding of modern museums to the campaign for women's suffrage.
