Praying Twice by Brian Wren Pdf

In this in depth look at hymns, Brian Wren explores the theological significance of congregational song, asks how music has meaning for its singers, and considers the importance of contemporary worship music. He argues that a hymn is a complex art form, deserving of recognition and study for its contributions to worship, education, and pastoral care.

Excerpt from The Congregational Tune-Book: A Selection of Hymn-Tunes, Old and New Finally, it is hoped that all allowance will be made for a work which had to be prepared at so short notice. The Editor feels that he might, with more time, have made a better book - might have given, for instance, more variety in the tunes, especially of Long, Common and Short Metres. He has, however, no apology to make for errors, whether of harmony or of typography, having furnished correct copy, and having enjoyed the privilege of reading the proof-sheets of the work. There is one case of consecutive fifths (in the r1th measure of No. But they are not offensive, and were introduced purposely, as the only means of avoiding the awkwardness of the original harmonization. The Congregational Tune-Book by Lowell Mason Pdf

Excerpt from The Congregational Tune-Book: Being a Collection of Popular and Approved Tunes, Mostly From the National Psalmist, Suitable for Congregational Use This book has been compiled in compliance with numerous requests from different sections of the country, and to supply the wants of those Societies where Congrega tional Singing has been introduced. The Selection, as is indicated in the Title, is chiefly from the national psalmist, and the harmony and arrangement are the same in both books, so that while the larger book is used by the choir, the smaller may be used by the congregation generally. While some few tunes have been inserted because they are well known, and in general use, it will be found that the majority are truly congregational in their character and style. For remarks upon the relative importance of, and position due to Congre gational and Choir singing, together with hints as to the best manner to introduce and sustain Congregational Singing, the reader is referred to the Preface of the national psalmist, a single sentence of which we may be permitted to insert here. While, therefore, we are decidedly friendly to congregational singing, we are equally so to choir singing; they are both legitimate forms of musical truth. Christian Congregational Music by Monique Ingalls,Carolyn Landau,Tom Wagner Pdf

Christian Congregational Music explores the role of congregational music in Christian religious experience, examining how musicians and worshippers perform, identify with and experience belief through musical praxis. Contributors from a broad range of fields, including music studies, theology, literature, and cultural anthropology, present interdisciplinary perspectives on a variety of congregational musical styles - from African American gospel music, to evangelical praise and worship music, to Mennonite hymnody - within contemporary Europe and North America. In addressing the themes of performance, identity and experience, the volume explores several topics of interest to a broader humanities and social sciences readership, including the influence of globalization and mass mediation on congregational music style and performance; the use of congregational music to shape multifaceted identities; the role of mass mediated congregational music in shaping transnational communities; and the function of music in embodying and imparting religious belief and knowledge. In demonstrating the complex relationship between ’traditional’ and ’contemporary’ sounds and local and global identifications within the practice of congregational music, the plurality of approaches represented in this book, as well as the range of musical repertoires explored, aims to serve as a model for future congregational music scholarship.
