The Constitutional History of England in Its Origin and Development, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by William Stubbs Pdf

Excerpt from The Constitutional History of England in Its Origin and Development, Vol. 2 Ziifiiiiiibif standing their uselessness. The prolific luxuriance of the age furnishes in politics, just as in architecture and in science, inventions which the rapidity of its movements and the involu tion of its many interests will not allow it to test. Hence the political ideas of the time produce on the fabric of society less eftect than might reasonably be looked for, and the strong and ancient groundwork on which the edifice has already been begun outlasts the many graceful but temporary superstructures which are now and again raised upon it. There are great men abroad, and great schemes; but the determination of the great struggles often turns on points of momentary interest. The life which the heroes of the age breathe into the constitutional body tends to invigorate the whole: their spirit remains whilst their designs perish. Slowly and steadily the old machinery gains strength and works out its own completeness. It shakes off the pre mature accretions which would anticipate the forms towards which it is ultimately tending. Hence the political and the mechanical sides of the story must be looked at separately the growth of the spirit of liberty apart from the expansion of the machinery for the spirit works in forms which it has soon to discard, the machinery grows in its own proper form in spite of the neglect or contempt of the men by whose force it subsists. Their genius lives, but with a life which runs _in other channels than those which it might itself have chosen. Excerpt from The Constitutional History of England Since the Accession of George the Third 1760-1860, Vol. 1 of 3 Constitutional History of England, from 1760 to 1860, having been concluded as a complete work, some years since, I have not ventured to disturb the original narrative, by any attempt to continue it to the prwent time. But more than ten years have since passed, which will ever be memorable in the consti tutional history of our country; and in preparing a new edition of this work, I have added a supplemen tary chapter, in which I have briefly reviewed the more remarkable events of this latter period, in their relations to the history of the previous hundred years, and have endeavoured to measure their influence. The Constitutional History of England from the Accession of Henry VII to the Death of George II, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint) by Henry Hallam Pdf

Excerpt from The Constitutional History of England From the Accession of Henry VII to the Death of George II, Vol. 1 of 3 In terminating the Constitutional History of England at the accession of George III. I have been influenced by unwillingness to excite the prejudices of modern politics, especially those connected with personal cha racter, which extend back through at least a large portion of that reign. It 18 indeed vain to expect that any com prehensive account of the two preceding centuries can be given without risking the disapprobation of those parties, religious or political, which originated during that period; but as I shall hardly incur the imputation of being the blind zealot of any of these, I have little to fear, in this respect, from the dispassionate' public, whose favour, both' in this country and on the con tinent, has been bestowed on my former work, with a 'liberality less due to any literary merit it may possess than to a regard for truth, which will, I trust, be found equally characteristic of the present.
