The Consumers Place in Society (Classic Reprint) by Percy Redfern Pdf

Excerpt from The Consumers Place in Society The lectures were given to co-operative and labour audiences, and the lecturer was happiest when (as in South Wales) the schools included militant young men from left-wing trade councils. He did not want to impede or distract Labour in its fight but he did want the young men to contend not for sections but for the whole Of the people, the consumers. Apart from the struggle between owners farming out possessions for profit and unions to sell labour at the highest possible price, he stood for a third party potentially greater than either - a party organised in a reconstructive movement leading to a new industry based on the peoples' needs, under the ownership and control Of the people in their masses. But while claiming the chief place for that third party he did not forget that the million wide ranks Of Labour are drawn from the flesh and blood Of the common democratic household whereas the capitalist mansion is another establishment altogether. In View Of the miners' stand for the British domestic consumer and in view, also, Of the very interesting experiment in co-operation between the municipalities, the Building Guild and the CO Operative Wholesale and co-operative Insurance Societies now proceeding, he is glad to emphasise again this common bond. For the idea Of his opening sentence the author is indebted to Mankind in the Making, by Mr. H. G. Wells - the book which Mr. Shaw proposed to dramatise by means Of a spout discharging the babies! He believes this to be the only due acknowledgment not to be found in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Consumer Society Reader by Juliet Schor,Douglas B. Holt Pdf

The Consumer Society Reader features a range of key works on the nature and evolution of consumer society. Included here is much-discussed work by leading critics such as Jean Baudrillard, Susan Bordo, Dick Hebdige, bell hooks, and Janice Radway. Also included is a full range of classics, such as Frankfurt School writers Adorno and Horkheimer on the Culture Industry; Thorstein Veblen's oft-cited writings on "conspicuous consumption"; Betty Friedan on the housewife's central role in consumer society; John Kenneth Galbraith's influential analysis of the "affluent society"; and Pierre Bourdieu on the notion of "taste." "Consumer society--the 'air we breathe,' as George Orwell has described it--disappears during economic downtruns and political crises. It becomes visible again when prosperity seems secure, cultural transformation is too rapid, or enviornmental disasters occur. Such is the time in which we now find ourselves. As the roads clog with gas-guzzling SUVs and McMansions proliferate in the suburbs, the nation is once again asking fundamental questions about lifestyle. Has 'luxury fever,' to use Robert Frank's phrase, gotten out of hand? Are we really comfortable with the 'Brand Is Me' mentality? Have we gone too far in pursuit of the almighty dollar, to the detriment of our families, communities, and natural enviornment? Even politicians, ordinarily impermeable to questions about consumerism, are voicing doubts... [and] polls suggest majorities of Americans feel the country has become too materialistic, too focused on getting and spending, and increasingly removed from long-standing non-materialist values." —From the introduction by Douglas B. Holt and Juliet B. Schor

The Book in Society by Solveig Robinson Pdf

The Book in Society: An Introduction to Print Culture examines the origins and development of one of the most important inventions in human history. Books can inform, entertain, inspire, irritate, liberate, or challenge readers, and their forms can be tangible and traditional, like a printed, casebound volume, or virtual and transitory, like a screen-page of a cell-phone novel. Written in clear, non-specialist prose, The Book in Society first provides an overview of the rise of the book and of the modern publishing and bookselling industries. It explores the evolution of written texts from early forms to contemporary formats, the interrelationship between literacy and technology, and the prospects for the book in the twenty-first century. The second half of the book is based on historian Robert Darnton’s concept of a book publishing “communication circuit.” It examines how books migrate from the minds of authors to the minds of readers, exploring such topics as the rise of the modern notion of the author, the role of states and others in promoting or restricting the circulation of books, various modes of reproducing and circulating texts, and how readers’ responses help shape the form and content of the books available to them. Feature boxes highlighting key texts, individuals, and developments in the history of the book, carefully selected illustrations, and a glossary all help bring the history of the book to life.

Consumers Co-Operative Societies (Classic Reprint) by Charles Gide Pdf

Excerpt from Consumers Co-Operative Societies The excellent translation of Professor Gide's Les Sociétés Coope'ratives de consommatz'on which follows is the result of the labors of the staff of the Cooperative Reference Library, Dublin, Ireland. The present editor, in preparing the book for an American public, has, by permission of the fellow-co-operators in Dublin, eliminated such of the English footnotes as were of interest principally to British readers or has incorporated them in his own. He has also moved up into the text many of Professor Gide's notes added by him at the time of the translation into English. Therefore at present there are only the two kinds of footnotes: those of the original author and those of the American editor. Consumers' Cooperation (Classic Reprint) by Albert Sonnichsen Pdf

Excerpt from Consumers' Cooperation Until the war, no speaker on Consumers' Cooperation could escape a question as pertinent as it was monoto nous: Why has success been so brilliant and con tinuous in England and other European countries while result-s are so meager in the United States? For the first time this form of Cooperation has become a serious working class interest. Extensively and in tensively it is on a scale which makes possible if not an answer, at least a more confident prophecy that we are to take our place in this world attempt to make democratizing industry something more than a phrase. I am far from giving it as a primary or even a sec ondary reason why cooperation so long halted in this country, but it has been sorely hampered by muddling together economic activities which have very little in common. A state of mind in which Profit-sharing, Labor Copartnership, Citrous Fruit Companies, Co operative Creameries and the like, are identical with Consumers' Cooperation, is one in which progress is embarrassed. Being Human in a Consumer Society by Prof Dr Alejandro Néstor García Martínez Pdf

This book offers a new perspective on sociological studies of the consumer society, introducing neglected normative questions relating to the good life and human flourishing - subjects more commonly discussed in fields of moral, political, and social philosophy. With attention to a wide range of subjects, including postemotional law and responsibility, dehumanised consumption and prosumerism, fashion, embodiment, conspicuous consumption, and sustainability, this book analyzes the structural and cultural transformations that can be identified in consumer society. It also offers a critical view of whether consumption is leading to an increased isolation, individualization or commodification of human beings, suggesting an analytical framework for understanding consumer culture and human praxis.

The Consumer Society by Jean Baudrillard Pdf

Jean Baudrillard's classic text was one of the first to focus on the process and meaning of consumption in contemporary culture. Originally published in 1970, the book makes a vital contribution to current debates on consumption. The book includes Baudrillard's most organized discussion of mass media culture, the meaning of leisure, and anomie in affluent society. A chapter on the body demonstrates Baudrillard's extraordinary prescience for flagging vital subjects in contemporary culture long before others. This English translation begins with a new introductory essay.

Consumers and Social Reform (Classic Reprint) by John Elliot Ross Pdf

Excerpt from Consumers and Social Reform Ave you ever stood in a country store and from the superior heights of mature wisdom watched a chubby-faced, bright-eyed boy invest a penny in a prize-bag? To you it is Simply a paper enclosing a few nuts, a piece of candy, and a variable quantity in the Shape of a tin ag, an imitation ring, etc. But to the child there is an excitement in getting one knows not what. All the gambling instincts of the race that squanders thousands upon the turf, all the love of adventure that peopled our continent, are summed up in that one act. The child has, perhaps, contentedly endured the routine of the farm for weeks in the anticipa tion of this one moment of blissful joy when his anxious fingers nervously reveal the delight or the disappointment. A Consumers' Republic by Lizabeth Cohen Pdf

In this signal work of history, Bancroft Prize winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Lizabeth Cohen shows how the pursuit of prosperity after World War II fueled our pervasive consumer mentality and transformed American life. Trumpeted as a means to promote the general welfare, mass consumption quickly outgrew its economic objectives and became synonymous with patriotism, social equality, and the American Dream. Material goods came to embody the promise of America, and the power of consumers to purchase everything from vacuum cleaners to convertibles gave rise to the power of citizens to purchase political influence and effect social change. Yet despite undeniable successes and unprecedented affluence, mass consumption also fostered economic inequality and the fracturing of society along gender, class, and racial lines. In charting the complex legacy of our “Consumers’ Republic” Lizabeth Cohen has written a bold, encompassing, and profoundly influential book.
