The Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic Church by Joseph F. Kelly Pdf

There have been twenty-one universal gatherings 'ecumenical councils' of the Catholic Church. The first opened in 325, the last closed in 1965, and the names of many ring out in the history of the church: Nicea, Chalcedon, Trent, Vatican II. Though centuries separate the councils, each occurred when the church faced serious crises, sometimes with doctrinal matters, sometimes with moral or even political matters, and sometimes with discerning the church's relation to the world. The councils determined much of what the Catholic Church is and believes. Additionally, many councils impacted believers in other Christian traditions and even in other faiths. In this accessible, readable, and yet substantial account of the councils Joseph Kelly provides both the historical context for each council as well as an account of its proceedings. Readers will discover how the councils shaped the debate for the following decades and even centuries, and will appreciate the occasional portraits of important conciliar figures from Emperor Constantine to Pope John XXIII.

Tradition and Transition by John W. O'Malley Pdf

When Pope John XXIII announced in January 1959 his intention to convene an ecumenical council, few anticipated the bold reshaping of the institutional church which was in store. The Second Vatican Council was a seminal event in church history ? yet decades later, there is still dispute over what the council intended, as well as uncertainty about what it all means for us today. By placing Vatican II within the broad perspective of Christian history, Tradition And Transition helps readers understand the context of the council's earth-shaking developments. John W. O?Malley provides an astute overview of the essential issues which drove the assembly, as well as the unique characteristics which distinguished Vatican II from all previous church councils and clearly influenced the direction it would take. He uses a threefold approach to bring Vatican II's many facets into clearer focus ? defining a methodology for interpreting the council, unraveling and clarifying its message, and contemplating what that might signify for the church's present and future. O?Malley emphasizes that taking the long viewpoint of history is crucial to grasping the council's true significance, and to that end he compares Vatican II to the Gregorian and Lutheran Reformations. He also notes that the seeds of many issues originated in the Middle Ages and the Counter-Reformation, and asserts that the council tried to reverse or moderate considerably positions crystallized during those eras. Suggesting that the radical adjustment of attitude and religious practice sparked by the council was symptomatic of the modern world's social and cultural transformation, O?Malley concludes that Vatican II necessitated nothingless than a complete change in mentality and internal frames of reference ? in other words, a new paradigm for looking at Christian tradition. This was embodied in the concept of aggiornamento (?updating?), a term which became the council's leitmotif.Taken in sum, the essays of this distinguished church historian provide a fascinating window for both scholars and interested readers into the remarkable impact of Vatican II on all areas of Catholic life. As its title implies, Tradition And Transition is a readable guide that offers penetrating insight into Vatican II's continuity with the church's rich heritage... and to its call for spiritual reform and renewal.

The Splendor of the Church in Mary: Henri de Lubac, Vatican II and Marian Ressourcement by Nguyen Op Theresa Marie Chau Pdf

Henri de Lubac, SJ, (1896-1991) is one of the most renowned theologians of the twentieth century. Numerous studies have been undertaken to examine his many contributions to theology, but little attention has been paid to the specific topic of the relationship of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church in his writings. This was a topic that gave rise to contentious discussion at the Second Vatican Council, and although the Council fathers approved the integration of Marian doctrine into the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, this synthesis of Mariology and ecclesiology has been largely neglected in theology today. The Splendor of the Church in Mary retrieves de Lubac's Marian ecclesiology and revives an understanding and appreciation of its enduring influence at the Vatican Council and beyond. The first part examines de Lubac's pre-conciliar works which evince a steady biblical and patristic ressourcement of Marian themes. It also explores his writings on Teilhard de Chardin's Eternal Feminine, Christian mysticism, and Amida Buddhism and discovers in them the essential building blocks of his Marian thought. The second part turns to the Second Vatican Council and post-conciliar developments. Rereading the debates and texts of Lumen Gentium through a Marian lens brings to light the extent of de Lubac's influence: Méditation sur l'Eglise (1953), his principal work on Mary and the Church, anticipated the structure and content of Lumen Gentium a decade before the Council. De Lubac's writings provided a theological compass for the Council fathers, and they continue to provide direction and orientation for ecclesiological discourse today. The Splendor of the Church in Mary culminates in a constructive analysis of one of the most pressing pastoral and ecclesiological questions of our times: the question of the relationship of the universal and particular churches. Directly engaging the crucial debate between then-Cardinal Ratzinger and Cardinal Kasper, it proposes that de Lubac's Mariology effectively offers a new perspective and a refreshing path forward. Attentive to the mystical identification of Mary and the Church, de Lubac's ressourcement has the potential to re-enchant and advance contemporary theology in new and significant ways.

Chalcedon in Context by Richard Price,Mary Whitby Pdf

The Council of Chalcedon in 451 was a defining moment in the Christological controversies that tore apart the churches of the Eastern Roman Empire in the fifth and sixth centuries, as theological division, political rivalry, and sectarian violence produced a schism that persists to this day between Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian churches. The Acts of the Councils are one of the largest collections of source materials relating to the Church of Late Antiquity and its state relations, and this volume places the acclaimed translation in context with the Council of Chalcedon of 451, ultimately informing historians on how to approach manifold aspects of these documents.
