The Critical Pulse by Jeffrey J. Williams,Heather Steffen Pdf

This unprecedented anthology asks thirty-six leading literary and cultural critics to elaborate on the nature of their profession. With the humanities feeling the pinch of financial and political pressures, and its disciplines resting on increasingly uncertain conceptual ground, there couldn't be a better time for critics to reassert their widespread relevance and purpose. These credos boldly defend the function of criticism in contemporary society and showcase its vitality in the era after theory. Essays address literature and politics, with some focusing on the sorry state of higher education and others concentrating on teaching and the fate of the humanities. All reflect the critics' personal, particular experiences. Deeply personal and engaging, these stories move, amuse, and inspire, ultimately encouraging the reader to develop his or her own critical credo with which to approach the world. Reflecting on the past, looking forward to the future, and committed to the power of productive critical thought, this volume proves the value of criticism for today's skeptical audiences. Ultrashort Pulse Laser Ablation of Bulk Materials Using Shaped Laser Beams by Dmitriy Mikhaylov Pdf

High precision, high quality, and high throughput of ultrashort pulse laser ablation of bulk material are the most demanded properties that are required to let this process technology compete with other micro-machining techniques. Previous attempts to increase volumetric ablation rates of ultrashort pulse laser processes were based on the increase of fluence or pulse repetition rates. They run into limitations mainly set by the occurrence of bumpy surfaces due to overheating of bulk material. In this work, the potential of laser beam shaping for the enhancement of ablation rates is studied systematically for the first time. The question regarding the physically shortest possible process time for ablation of 2.5D-structures by means of an ultrashort pulse laser is answered using a heat conduction model, which is extended by the ability to consider spatially shaped beams. The strategy of laser beam stamping is implemented in a novel optical setup and proven both theoretically and experimentally to have a great potential for increasing ablation rates.

Hierarchic Electrodynamics and Free Electron Lasers by Victor V. Kulish Pdf

Hierarchic Electrodynamics and Free Electron Lasers: Concepts, Calculations, and Practical Applications presents intriguing new fundamental concepts in the phenomenon of hierarchical electrodynamics as a new direction in physics. Concentrating on the key theory of hierarchic oscillations and waves, this book focuses on the numerous applications of nonlinear theory in different types of high-current Free Electron Lasers (FEL), including their primary function in the calculation methods used to analyze various multi-resonant, multi-frequency nonlinear FEL models. This is considered the first book to: Completely and systematically describe the foundation of hierarchical electrodynamics as a new direction of physics Fully represent the physics of high-current FEL—and associated models—from the hierarchic oscillation wave perspective Cover the multi-harmonic nonlinear theory of new types of electronic devices, such as plasma-beam and two-stream FEL Formulate and substantiate the concept of cluster femtosecond FEL Analyze practical prospects for a new generation of a global "Star Wars" strategic defense systems These subjects involve a wide range of disciplines. Using numerous real-world examples to illustrate information and concepts, the book offers a mathematical foundation to explore FEL applications as well as analyze hierarchic plasma-like electrodynamic systems and femto-second clusters of electromagnetic energy. Assembling fragmented concepts from existing literature, the author re-examines classic approaches in order to develop new insights and achieve scientific breakthroughs.

Design of a superconducting DC wind generator by Liu, Yingzhen Pdf

The trend towards larger power ratings of wind turbines asks for innovations in power generation, which requires lower weight and cost, smaller size, higher efficiency and reliability. Due to high current-carrying capability and no DC losses of superconductors, a superconducting wind generator can have a superior power to weight/volume ratio with high efficiency. The work in the book mainly focuses on the feasibility study and design of a superconducting DC wind generator.

Laser-Induced Damage of Optical Materials by Roger M. Wood Pdf

The laser power handling capacities of optical systems are determined by the physical properties of their component materials. At low intensity levels these factors are not important, but an understanding of damage mechanisms is fundamental to good design of laser products operating at high power. Laser Induced Damage of Optical Materials presents
