Lake Ronkonkoma in History and Legend, the Princess Curse and Other Stories by David S. Igneri Pdf

The History and Legends of Lake Ronkonkoma, the Princess Curse and Other Stories; A Lifeguard's View, discusses the history and the folklore of Long Island's largest lake. It builds a strong case for the Princess legend. The author consulted professional opinions, of paranormal experts, who generally believe curses are real, not superstition. He also consulted many sources on Lake Ronkonkoma, to focus in on the fact that a young male has drowned almost every year, and that few females have died in the Lake. In fact it remains, that possibly only one female lost her life. Her official cause of death was kidney failure, caused by secondary drowning. The volume also chronicles the lifeguard career of the author, David S. Igneri. His lifeguards at the lake and his other beaches were, in general gifted athletes. However, to lifeguard Lake Ronkonkoma they needed specific training that was not covered in their regular lifeguard preparation. At first, Igneri himself, did not totally understand the task before him. However, he sought advice from older lifeguards, and read everything he could about Ronkonkoma, and formulated a program. In his early years he did not believe in the Princess Curse at all, and believed it was only superstition. His experiences during that time, made him re-think his views. Gradually he realized that some force or entity was causing, or helped causing the many deaths. David Igneri began to change his policies at Lake Ronkonkoma on July 5, 1965. He totally believes that the spirits told him what to do. His goal became to protect and save all of the people, all of the time, and stop the legend. After reading this volume, you will have to decide for yourself, how much success he had in this endeavor.

The Curse of Lake Ronkonkoma by Michael Ebert Pdf

This self-published text chronicles the various historical myths and legends of Lake Ronkonkoma, which is Long Island's largest lake. Some superstitions have depicted the mile-wide kettle lake as being bottomless or having underground connections to other waterways, while others describe it as having an uncanny tendency to rise and fall in cyclical patterns. Perhaps the most fascinating tales involve a lovesick indian princess who killed herself in the lake and returns annually to claim the life of a male. The author, Michael R. Ebert, became interested in the lake's many mysteries after a classmate drowned there in the 1990s. Years later, he noticed the lack of a comprehensive text on the topic and scoured local libraries and historical societies to conduct his own research, which is recounted here. Lake Ronkonkoma by Keith Oswald,Dale Spencer Pdf

Lake Ronkonkoma, located in the center of Long Island, became a summer destination for wealthy New Yorkers with the arrival of the railroad in 1843. Luxurious hotels were built around the lakeshore during the 1890s to attract visitors. People would utilize the sparkling waters of the lake for boating, fishing, and swimming. At night, hotel guests could dance, gamble in the casino, and enjoy sumptuous meals. By the 1920s, as more people could afford automobiles, beach pavilions began decorating the shoreline of Lake Ronkonkoma. Thousands of people were flocking to this summer paradise. Canoeing, camping, dancing to live music, beauty contests, and fireworks entertained visitors. The area continued to grow in popularity until World War II when gas rationing limited travel. By the 1950s, Lake Ronkonkoma had become a town populated by year-round residents.

The Book of Speculation by Erika Swyler Pdf

One of BuzzFeed's 24 Best Fiction Books of 2015 "As Simon, a lonely research librarian, searches frantically for the key to a curse that might be killing the women in his family, he learns strange and fascinating secrets about their past. A tale full of magic and family mystery, The Book of Speculation will keep you up all night reading."—Isaac Fitzgerald, BuzzFeed Simon Watson, a young librarian, lives alone in a house that is slowly crumbling toward the Long Island Sound. His parents are long dead. His mother, a circus mermaid who made her living by holding her breath, drowned in the very water his house overlooks. His younger sister, Enola, ran off six years ago and now reads tarot cards for a traveling carnival. One June day, an old book arrives on Simon's doorstep, sent by an antiquarian bookseller who purchased it on speculation. Fragile and water damaged, the book is a log from the owner of a traveling carnival in the 1700s, who reports strange and magical things, including the drowning death of a circus mermaid. Since then, generations of "mermaids" in Simon's family have drowned--always on July 24, which is only weeks away. As his friend Alice looks on with alarm, Simon becomes increasingly worried about his sister. Could there be a curse on Simon's family? What does it have to do with the book, and can he get to the heart of the mystery in time to save Enola? In the tradition of Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, and Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian, The Book of Speculation--with two-color illustrations by the author--is Erika Swyler's moving debut novel about the power of books, family, and magic.

Myths and Legends of America by Charles M. Skinner Pdf

266 Strange Tales, Myths and Legends that Help Define the American Character. It is said that, compared to Europe, America has no real stockpile of myth and legend. As a nation grows forward, that supply accumulates backward, and America has simply not been around long enough for it to build-up. This book makes that belief itself into a myth. In the late 19th Century, Charles M. Skinner set about on a journey to collect the myths and legends of America before it was too late—before they passed into oblivion. Scouring old records, histories, newspapers, magazines, and oral narratives, he reconstructed 266 tales from all corners of our nation. This priceless record of our cultural heritage is presented in this Fireship Press edition. - How many New Englanders are aware that the Hudson River was created by one of the three wise men of Bethlehem fame? - If you live near the Great Lakes, did you know that Hiawatha was born on Mackinaw (Mackinac) Island? - How many Southerners know the story of the Biloxi Indian tribe that marched into the sea and drowned rather than surrender to an army of Choctaws? - Somewhere along the Purgatoire River in Colorado a fortune in gold is buried—put there by a Spanish infantry regiment that entered the valley... and simply disappeared. All of these stories and more—from every region of the country—can now be found in: Myths and Legends of America. It is where myth and history combine that legend is most interesting and appeals to our fancy or our sympathy most strongly... Charles M. Skinner
