The main theme of the novel is the tragic experiences of the two women as a result of the return of Teresa's husband, who takes a fancy to Esperanza, still a child, and tyrannises them in a home that has become a prison. Particularly notable is the author's prologue, in which she makes a vindictive defence of women's rights to intellectual life, citing outstanding predecessors from both the world of the arts and politics, and including some examples of women fighters, reformers and powerful women in different spheres of public life.
