Al-Hilal was an Urdu weekly founded and edited by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1912. The weekly played a significant role during the national struggle against colonialism and spread the message of nationalism and Political Conciousness among the Urdu speaking population. This led to a voice of protest among the Muslim population against the British. British in turn tried to suppress movement. But in a short period of its life, the Al-Hilal had firmly placed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad at the pinnacle of his literary and political fame where he remained throughout the liberation struggle and after.
