The Deadly Embrace by Ilana Kass,Bard E. O'Neill Pdf

The purpose of this book is three-fold: First, drawing on a wide array of primary and secondary sources, it aims to compare and contrast the historical roots, goals, strategies, organizational structures, and current activities of Palestinian and Israeli opponents of any mutual compromise. Second, the book assesses the dynamic interaction of two rejectionist movements, espousing mutually exclusive political agendas and demonstrates how they feed off and reinforce each others enmities. Third, the book seeks to expose to public scrutiny a deeply-entrenched phenomenon that has continued to lurk in the shadows, while enjoying both tacit and direct support from segments within the American Arab and Jewish communities. Although such recent outrages as the Hebron massacre, the Rabin assassination and the spate of suicide bombings in Israel's cities have re-centered attention on Middle Eastern terrorism, the primary focus has been on lone actions of deranged individuals. In contrast, the authors contend that what we have witnessed thus far is merely the tip of the iceberg-overt manifestations of a deep-seated, festering problem, namely: increasingly militant insurgent movements, united in their near-term aim of destroying the peace process, but ultimately sworn to destroy each other. The book concludes with a set of policy choices and recommendations which the U.S., Israel and the Palestinian National Authority should pursue in tandem to marginalize the rejectionist threat, before it escalates to hitherto unimaginable levels of violence. Co-published with the National Institute of Public Policy.

Wrong Turn by Gian Gentile Pdf

A searing indictment of US strategy in Afghanistan from a distinguished military leader and West Point military historian—“A remarkable book” (National Review). In 2008, Col. Gian Gentile exposed a growing rift among military intellectuals with an article titled “Misreading the Surge Threatens U.S. Army’s Conventional Capabilities,” that appeared in World Politics Review. While the years of US strategy in Afghanistan had been dominated by the doctrine of counterinsurgency (COIN), Gentile and a small group of dissident officers and defense analysts began to question the necessity and efficacy of COIN—essentially armed nation-building—in achieving the United States’ limited core policy objective in Afghanistan: the destruction of Al Qaeda. Drawing both on the author’s experiences as a combat battalion commander in the Iraq War and his research into the application of counterinsurgency in a variety of historical contexts, Wrong Turn is a brilliant summation of Gentile’s views of the failures of COIN, as well as a trenchant reevaluation of US operations in Afghanistan. “Gentile is convinced that Obama’s ‘surge’ in Afghanistan can’t work. . . . And, if Afghanistan doesn’t turn around soon, the Democrats . . . who have come to embrace the Petraeus-Nagl view of modern warfare . . . may find themselves wondering whether it’s time to go back to the drawing board.” —The New Republic

Deadly Embrace by Sebastian Balfour Pdf

Combining military, political, cultural, social, and oral history, Sebastian Balfour narrates for the first time the development of a brutalised, interventionist army that played a crucial role in the victory of the Francoists in the Spanish Civil War. Spain's new colonial venture in Morocco in the early twentieth-century turned into a bloody war against the tribes resisting the Spanish invasion of their lands. After suffering a succession of heavy military disasters against some of the most accomplished guerrillas in the world, the Spanish army turned to chemical warfare and dropped massive quantities of mustard gas on civilians. Dr Balfour exposes this previously closely guarded secret using evidence from Spanish military archives and from survivors in Morocco. He also narrates the daily life of soldiers in the war as well as the self-images and tensions among the colonial officers. After looking at the motives that drove Moroccans to resist or cooperate with Spain, the author describes the contradictory pictures among Spaniards of Moroccan collaborators and foes. Finally, he examines the Spanish colonial army's response to the Second Republic of 1931-1936 and its brutal march through Spain in the Civil War. QUOTES FROM PAUL PRESTON'S READERS REPORT: 'This is a book of very considerable significance, the work of a first rate historian working at his peak...This is the most complete and wide-ranging account to date of the Spanish involvement in Morocco and of the consequences of that involvement inside Spain itself...written with a compelling blend of elegance and immediacy...this is a major work, one of which any historian would be proud.'

On the eve of the Planned D-Day invasion of Hitler’s Fortress Europe, Lieutenant Elizabeth “Liza” Marantz arrives in London, the city streets aflame in the aftermath of a massive Luftwaffe bombing attack. Teamed up with Major Sam Taggart, a troubled former New York City homicide detective, she must investigate the deaths of two female colleagues who were involved in sexual relationships with powerful Allied commanders. As Liza’s investigation leads from bomb-ravaged London to elegant English country estates, it becomes clear that more than one conspiracy is afoot—and that the very success of the war may rest in her hands. With rich dialogue and pulse-pounding suspense, The Deadly Embrace is a razor-sharp thriller, ingenious in its interweaving of fictional characters with real-life figures, and filled with fascinating historical atmosphere and detail.

Mitigating the Deadly Embrace in Financial Cycles by Mr.Jaromir Benes,Mr.Douglas Laxton,Mr.Joannes Mongardini Pdf

This paper presents a new version of MAPMOD (Mark II) to study the effectiveness of macroprudential regulations. We extend the original model by explicitly modeling the housing market. We show how household demand for housing, house prices, and bank mortgages are intertwined in what we call a deadly embrace. Without macroprudential policies, this deadly embrace naturally leads to housing boom and bust cycles, which can be very costly for the economy, as shown by the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09.

Fatal Embrace by Mark Braverman Pdf

In Fatal Embrace, Braverman provocatively argues that Jewish exclusivism is being enacted in the colonial, expansionist nature of the State of Israel. He also contends that the attempts by Christians to atone for anti-Semitism have resulted in the suppression of honest interfaith dialogue on the issue, blocking progress toward a just peace. This book is a call to action directed at Christians and other Americans.
