The Death of a Convict and the Birth of a Young Woman by Michael Angell Pdf

Morning possessed no reason for him, a continuous blinking ghostline, a chain of fiery now and cooling then-stars. Against a post he stood, waiting for what had followed his earthly body from inside dreams, visions, gestures and Failure's longing perfumed perfection and out into awakening above alarms calling and the setting sun. He wasn't waiting for himself, nor was he being himself; all in all, he'd put himself someplace intentionally without mood or effects. What had no middle mattered only if it ended and Grey could give nothing that Color didn't first consume as a canvas to exist on. Perhaps the day had sit down, as a boy might; him with his satchels of spices, coffee and oregano. His remembrance of appetite seemed to look back and turn to pepper in his mouth. He couldn't understand that he was eating sunlight: seeing darted through a mile's felling of tall, book-like pieces and birdbaths seen set in-between and bent away from his journey's rumbling...

Charleton and McDermott's Criminal Law and Evidence by Peter Charleton,Paul A McDermott,Ciara Herlihy,Stephen Byrne Pdf

This second edition of what was in 1999 an acclaimed work, has been completely rewritten. In approaching this, the authors have considerably increased the analysis of the theoretical aspects of criminal law and strengthened citations of academic literature and comparative case law while keeping the narrative concise and focused for easy use by practitioners. Key benefits to readers include a complete overview of criminal law theory; a new series of chapters on the law of evidence as it applies in the fraught circumstances of a criminal trial; a much more analytical approach to the general part and to criminal defences; and the comprehensive coverage of all the major, and many minor, areas of indictable crime. Since the last edition, commentary and case law on sexual offences has proliferated as have legislative interventions; a completely new scheme for dealing with property offences was necessitated by a series of recent statutes; company law and competition offences have assumed a greater significance; and the range of offences covered has had to be increased in order to ensure a comprehensive coverage of this most sensitive and politically charged aspect of law.

Capital Punishment and the Criminal Corpse in Scotland, 1740–1834 by Rachel E. Bennett Pdf

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides the most in-depth study of capital punishment in Scotland between the mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth century to date. Based upon an extensive gathering and analysis of previously untapped resources, it takes the reader on a journey from the courtrooms of Scotland to the theatre of the gallows. It introduces them to several of the malefactors who faced the hangman’s noose and explores the traditional hallmarks of the spectacle of the scaffold. It demonstrates that the period between 1740 and 1834 was one of discussion, debate and fundamental change in the use of the death sentence and how it was staged in practice. In addition, the study provides an innovative investigation of the post-mortem punishment of the criminal corpse. It offers the reader an insight into the scene at the foot of the gibbets from which criminal bodies were displayed and around the dissection tables of Scotland’s main universities where criminal bodies were used as cadavers for anatomical demonstration. In doing so it reveals an intermediate stage in the long-term disappearance of public bodily punishment.

CRIMINAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL LAW IN MALAYSIA: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH by HASBOLLAH BIN MAT SAAD,MAIZATUL AZILA BINTI CHEE DIN,MOHD AZIZIE BIN ABDUL AZIZ Pdf

Criminal Law and Constitutional Law in Malaysia: A Comparative Approach is a solid, application-oriented text for students taking law subjects. Many new features make this edition a richer and stronger learning resource for students. Several factors motivated the authors to write this book. After having the experience in legal field and teaching for more than 10 years, it became clear that there was a definite need for more detail materials in this area. In addition, there was need for a book which would give full recognition to an easier method and the authors felt it was time for a text which would develop the ideas and methods with this in mind. This book covers a thorough discussion of the development of law in Malaysia; especially criminal and constitutional law matters. A major audience for the book will be students studying the law subjects. The order of topics, however, provides a degree of flexibility, so that the book can be of interest to different readers through basic concepts until the advanced concepts (i.e. the discussion of the cases). The purpose of this book is to take the readers on an introduction to Malaysian Criminal and Constitutional Law by which the meaning of such subject at basic level is better understood. Hopefully, this book can be benefited by the readers in their journey to success.

Criminal Women, 1850–1920 by Lucy Williams,Barry Godfrey Pdf

“The fascinating lives of the women who hit hard times . . . investigat[es] the stories behind the faces in the incredible images.” —Al Bawaba Women are among the hardest individuals to trace through the historical record and this is especially true of female offenders who had a vested interest in not wanting to be found. That is why this thought-provoking and accessible handbook by Lucy Williams and Barry Godfrey is of such value. It looks beyond the crimes and the newspaper reports of women criminals in the Victorian era in order to reveal the reality of their personal and penal journeys, and it provides a guide for researchers who are keen to explore this intriguing and neglected subject. The book is split into three sections. There is an introduction outlining the historical context for the study of female crime and punishment, then a series of real-life case studies which show in a vivid way the complexity of female offenders’ lives and follows them through the penal system. The third section is a detailed guide to archival and online sources that readers can consult in order to explore the life-histories of criminal women. The result is a rare combination of academic guide and how-to-do-it manual. It introduces readers to the latest research in the field and it gives them all the information they need to carry out their own research. “The core of the book consists of some 30 case studies of women who went through the system, their offences (from drunkenness and petty theft to murder) and their punishments (from fines or prison to transportation or execution).” —Police History Society
