The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman by Barbara Wilson Pdf

DIVDIVA collection of nine madcap stories following the wayfaring translator and amateur sleuth Cassandra Reilly around the globe in search of her next great mystery/divDIV Lesbian translator and part-time detective Cassandra Reilly has two thrilling investigations under her belt: the case of a missing person in Barcelona and that of a dead spa-owner in Transylvania. In this humorous and engrossing collection, Cassandra is hard at work in some of the world’s most picturesque locales, including Maui, the English moors, and the Icelandic coast./divDIV Among the vast assortment of misdeeds she’s called upon to investigate—most of which take place within the literary world—Cassandra finds ample opportunity to exercise her trademark wit and eye for irony. From “Murder at the International Feminist Book Fair,” in which the exploits of a mudslinging women’s magazine lead to a death on the floor of the convention, to “An Expatriate Death,” about a local Mexican writer who appropriates Cassandra’s identity for a character in his novel—and then promptly kills off the character—The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman is another showcase of the intrepid translator’s zest not only for globetrotting, but for wandering smack into the middle of the most unusual crimes./divDIV The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman is the third book in the Cassandra Reilly Mystery series, which begins with Gaudí Afternoon and Trouble in Transylvania, and concludes with The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists./div/div

The Travels of David Thompson by Sean T. Peake Pdf

At age 75, David Thompson began to write about his life of exploration and surveying in western North America from 1784 to 1812. At this point, how-ever, the odds of finishing were slim; his eyesight was failing, his body was worn out after years of strain on portages and mountain passes. For five years he toiled with rewrites and revisions, never able to set the final account in order. On 16 January 1851 he put his "papers to right" in one last attempt to finish his work. By 28 February 1851, no longer able to see, he gave up his pen as well as any hope of completing his Travels. Like a true surveyor, though, he left a well-blazed trail for others to follow. Drawing from the four surviving manuscripts and Thompson's 77 notebooks filled with daily journals, reports, essays, and anecdotes, Sean Peake finished what Thompson set out to achieve: a full account that encompasses the "extent of the forests, of the great Plains, the animals, birds, fishes &c &c peculiar to each section; the various tribes of Indians which inhabit these countries, their several languages, their religious opinions, manners and mode of life, place and extent of hunting grounds, and the changes which have taken place, by the fortune of war or other causes... a curious and extensive collection of all that can fall under the observation of a traveller." This edition of The Travels of David Thompson is a landmark publication in Canadian history, fully deserving of a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in a first-hand account of the tumultuous struggle for control of western North America.

Travels on the Amazon by Alfred Russel Wallace Pdf

Travels on the Amazon presents adventurous chronicles of Alfred Russel Wallace's travels to the Amazon rainforests of Brazil in South America. Inspired by the travelogues of earlier and contemporary traveling naturalists, including Charles Darwin and specifically William Henry Edwards, Wallace was determined to go on an expedition abroad as a naturalist. In 1848, he and Henry Bates left for Brazil. They intended to gather insects and other animal specimens in the Amazon Rainforest for their private collections. They wanted to sell the duplicates to museums and collectors in Britain to fund the trip. Wallace also hoped to gather evidence of the changes in the species. Wallace and Bates spent most of their first year collecting near Belém, then examined inland separately. They sometimes met to discuss their findings. Wallace spent four years analyzing the inhabitants and the languages he encountered, along with the geography, flora, and fauna. After returning to the U.K., he wrote several papers and books about his ventures and findings. This wonderful book is one of his impressive travel books.

Travels with Tooy by Richard Price Pdf

Thirty-five years into his research among the descendants of rebel slaves living in the South American rain forest, anthropologist Richard Price encountered Tooy, a priest, philosopher, and healer living in a rough shantytown on the outskirts of Cayenne, French Guiana. Tooy is a time traveler who crosses boundaries between centuries, continents, the worlds of the living and the dead, and the visible and invisible. With an innovative blend of storytelling and scholarship, Travels with Tooy recounts the mutually enlightening and mind-expanding journeys of these two intellectuals. Included on the itinerary for this hallucinatory expedition: forays into the eighteenth century to talk with slaves newly arrived from Africa; leaps into the midst of battles against colonial armies; close encounters with double agents and femme fatale forest spirits; and trips underwater to speak to the comely sea gods who control the world’s money supply. This enchanting book draws on Price’s long-term ethnographic and archival research, but above all on Tooy’s teachings, songs, stories, and secret languages to explore how Africans in the Americas have created marvelous new worlds of the imagination.
