Desert Lake by Mandy Martin,John Carty,Steve Morton,Kim Mahood Pdf

Desert Lake is a book combining artistic, scientific and Indigenous views of a striking region of north-western Australia. Paruku is the place that white people call Lake Gregory. It is Walmajarri land, and its people live on their Country in the communities of Mulan and Billiluna. This is a story of water. When Sturt Creek flows from the north, it creates a massive inland Lake among the sandy deserts. Not only is Paruku of national significance for waterbirds, but it has also helped uncover the past climatic and human history of Australia. Paruku's cultural and environmental values inspire Indigenous and other artists, they define the place as an enduring home, and have led to its declaration as an Indigenous Protected Area. The Walmajarri people of Paruku understand themselves in relation to Country, a coherent whole linking the environment, the people and the Law that governs their lives. These understandings are encompassed by the Waljirri or Dreaming and expressed through the songs, imagery and narratives of enduring traditions. Desert Lake is embedded in this broader vision of Country and provides a rich visual and cross-cultural portrait of an extraordinary part of Australia.

The Desert Lake Mystery by Kay Cleaver Strahan Pdf

The Desert Lake Mystery, first published in 1936, is a ‘golden-age’ mystery involving two corpses and two missing bodies. Set in Nevada, the plot revolves around local magnate Adam Oakman and his family, with a brother shooting his sister. The story is narrated by the town’s sheriff. The characters rather than the incidents, provide the special problem in untangling of two tangible corpses and two missing ones. Essentially the plot revolves around a powerful man, within his little pond, Adam Oakman; his daughter he hadn’t seen since a baby; his adopted son; a crippled lad whose sweet on Oakman’s daughter; the crippled man’s beautiful sister; Adam’s sister in law, or cousin, some kind of relation; and her fat, fastidious son. Naturally there are other people thrown in for red herrings—an old judge, his son, Indians, a couple of deputies, and Bridget O’Dell who essentially solves the murders. The sheriff narrates, but Bridget O’Dell, with the off stage help of the female detective, Lynn Macdonald, comes up with the solution.

The Wandering Lake by Sven Hedin Pdf

The third in Sven Hedin's Central Asia trilogy, The Wandering Lake is arguably his most famous work and a rare account of a now-vanished world. The lake of Lop Nur, the 'heart of the heart of Asia', is one of the world's strangest phenomena. Situated in the wild Chinese province of Xinjiang, Lop Nur - 'the wandering lake'- has for millennia been in a perpetual state of flux, drifting north to south, often tens of kilometres in as many years. It was once the lifeblood of the great Silk Road kingdom of Loulan, which flourished in this otherwise barren region 2,000 years ago, and its peculiar movements confused even Ptolemy, who marked the lake twice on his map of Asia. Following 'the pulse-beats of Lop Nur as a doctor examines a patient's heart', Sven Hedin became captivated by its peripatetic movements and for forty years his destiny was inextricably linked with that of this mysterious lake and the region surrounding it. His last journey to Lop Nur was in 1934, just days after he was released as a prisoner of General Ma Chung-yin (the rebel leader of Xinjiang). Travelling the length of the Konche-daria and Kum-daria rivers by canoe, Hedin embarked on his last Central Asian expedition and proved what he had always suspected - that Lop Nur did indeed shift position - and why. When he camped on its vast banks at night, Lop Nur was deep and full. Today, this once great lake - a mighty reservoir in the desert - is nothing but windblown sand and salty marsh. A gripping story of adventure and discovery, The Wandering Lake is a masterpiece by one of history's last great explorers.

The Desert Lake by Linda Leith Pdf

Barbara Crossie, 31-year-old relationships columnist, has been invited by her friend Harry to join a Canadian delegation to China. Also in the delegation is the formidable Elizabeth Pearl Murray, head of the Writers’ Guild, who used to live in China. Barbara’s not sure what she has to contribute, as she’s only just published her first book—Mad About Men —but Harry, a publisher of worthy political books, assures her she will be great, the trip will be great. Barbara agrees on the condition that they meet up with her agent, Josh, who also happens to be her long-distance lover. Barbara and Josh are at a crossroads, and she needs to find out if they are going to take the next step in their relationship. Although Harry is a little in love with Barbara himself, he reluctantly agrees to include Josh. "Barbara folded down the plastic table of the seat in front of her, opened her notebook to a fresh page, and wrote: Josh. True love. China. These were the key words. Barbara didn’t know how to fit them together. She was missing articles, prepositions, conjunctions, verbs, moods, tenses. She didn’t know how to turn these words into a story. She didn’t even know how to turn them in a sentence. All she had, for now, were these first words. His name, her heart’s desire, a destination." But things go awry from the moment of their arrival, when Josh simply doesn’t appear. When Barbara manages to reach his office and finds out he has not only not taken the flight to China, but is at his mountain cabin and unreachable, she is at a loss what to do, and so she carries on with her companions, traveling the Silk Road to the ends of the earth, and eventually finding herself in the deadliest desert on earth. And that is where she learns how to fit the keys words in her personal lexicon together and tell her story. Love, loss, and discovery are only part of The Desert Lake . This is a smart and subtle literary novel that also manages to be a page turner.

Cadillac Desert by Marc Reisner Pdf

“I’ve been thinking a lot about Cadillac Desert in the past few weeks, as the rain fell and fell and kept falling over California, much of which, despite the pouring heavens, seems likely to remain in the grip of a severe drought. Reisner anticipated this moment. He worried that the West’s success with irrigation could be a mirage — that it took water for granted and didn’t appreciate the precariousness of our capacity to control it.” – Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times, January 20,2023 "The definitive work on the West's water crisis." --Newsweek The story of the American West is the story of a relentless quest for a precious resource: water. It is a tale of rivers diverted and dammed, of political corruption and intrigue, of billion-dollar battles over water rights, of ecological and economic disaster. In his landmark book, Cadillac Desert, Marc Reisner writes of the earliest settlers, lured by the promise of paradise, and of the ruthless tactics employed by Los Angeles politicians and business interests to ensure the city's growth. He documents the bitter rivalry between two government giants, the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in the competition to transform the West. Based on more than a decade of research, Cadillac Desert is a stunning expose and a dramatic, intriguing history of the creation of an Eden--an Eden that may only be a mirage. This edition includes a new postscript by Lawrie Mott, a former staff scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, that updates Western water issues over the last two decades, including the long-term impact of climate change and how the region can prepare for the future.

China Lake by Barret Baumgart Pdf

Barret Baumgart’s literary debut presents a haunting and deeply personal portrait of civilization poised at the precipice, a picture of humanity caught between its deepest past and darkest future. In the fall of 2013, during the height of California’s historic drought, Baumgart toured the remote military base, NAWS China Lake, near Death Valley, California. His mother, the survivor of a recent stroke, decided to come along for the ride. She hoped the alleged healing power of the base’s ancient Native American hot springs might cure her crippling headaches. Baumgart sought to debunk claims that the military was spraying the atmosphere with toxic chemicals to control the weather. What follows is a discovery that threatens to sever not only the bonds between mother and son but between planet Earth and life itself. Stalking the fringes of Internet conspiracy, speculative science, and contemporary archaeology, Baumgart weaves memoir, military history, and investigative journalism in a dizzying journey that carries him from the cornfields of Iowa to drought-riddled California, from the Vietnam jungle to the caves of prehistoric Europe and eventually the walls of the US Capitol, the sparkling white hallways of the Pentagon, and straight into the contradicted heart of a worldwide climate emergency.
