Designing and Construction of Storage Reservoirs (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Jacob Pdf

Excerpt from Designing and Construction of Storage Reservoirs Before entering upon such considerations as affect the selection of reservoir sites and their construction, a brief allusion to some of the most ancient works for impounding water may not be uninteresting. Of these the most prominent examples are undoubt edly to be found in Hindostan, Where the magnitude and antiquity of the storage Works cannot fail to arrest attention. These great Works, surpassing in their immensity What are conventionally esteemed to be the wonders of the world, the production of other countries and nations, took their ori gin in the necessities of the people and the variableness of the climate of India, andwere, in fact, great public' works on which the welfare of the people mainly depended. The climate of India, although singularly uniform in some respects from year to year, is remarkably variable as regards the rain fall; and in order to guard against the dis asters of famine and sickness, inevitably attendant on a scanty monsoon, the native princes were wont to make such provisions as large resources and an almost unlimited power enabled them, in order to obviate the difficulty that they had to contend with. Hydrological Dimensioning and Operation of Reservoirs by I.V. Nagy,K. Asante-Duah,I. Zsuffa Pdf

Storage reservoirs represent one of the most effective tools for eliminating, or at least for minimizing, discrepancies in the time and space variations of water resources distribution and requirements. In fact, the different - often contradictory - and increasing demands on water resources utilization and control usually can be fulfilled only by building multi-purpose reservoir systems. In this way, the available water resources can be exploited and/or managed in a more rational way. Typically, the construction of a dam across a river valley causes water to accumulate in a reservoir behind the dam; the volume of water accumulated in the reservoir will depend, in part, on the dimensions of the dam. The size of the dam will normally affect the capital expenditure in a very significant way. Indeed the construction of large water resource control systems - such as dams - generally involves rather huge manpower and material outlays. Consequently, the elaboration of effectual methods of approach that can be used in establishing the optimal reservoir parameters is of great practical significance. For instance, in the design and operation oflarge multi-reservoir systems, simple simulation and/or optimization models that can identify potentially cost effective and efficient system design are highly desirable. But it should be recognized that the problem of finding optimal capacities for multi-reservoir systems often becomes computationally complex because of the large number of feasible configurations that usually need to be analyzed.

Water Resources and Reservoir Engineering by British Dam Society. Conference Pdf

This volume explores the current issues and recent international developments in reservoir planning and operation, design and construction, monitoring and maintenance. In the light of the recent climatic changes which have seen a reduction in rainfall and resulted in water shortages, a number of pertinent subjects are examined in detail, for example the provision of new resources, evaluation of optimal operating policies, review of water supply options, sedimentation effects, the environmental aspects and the economic viability of reservoirs.
