Klaus F. Riegel (1925-1977) was a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His books include Psychology, mon amour: A countertext, Foundations of Dialectical Psychology, and Psychological Studies in Bilingual Performances and Cross-linguistic Differences. John A. Meacham is distinguished professor of psychology at the University of Buffalo. His current research interests include the influence of student diversity on teaching and learning and the science of teaching for and assessment of undergraduate teaching and learning. He has served as a consultant for the Association of American Colleges and Universities' Asheville Institute on General Education and initiated the concept of prospective memory.

This book grew out of discussion at the meetings of the Board of Sci entific Affair,r of the American Psychological Association during the years 1972 through 1975. Members of the board felt that there was general misunderstanding by the public about the role of basic research in science. The problem was thought to be particularly severe in the case of the behavioral sciences but it appeared to be a reflection of a more general anti-intellectual attitude in the United States. At the same time basic researchers had been admittedly underconcerned with the prac tical application of their results.
