DEVELOPMENT OF JOHN DRYDENS LI by William Edward Bohn Pdf

Excerpt from The Development of John Dryden's Literary Criticism The opinion which seeks to belittle Dryden' 5 critical power is represented by Delius in his dissertation, Dryden and shajcespeare.2 Here Dryden is represented as caught in the meshes of contemporary doctrine. The dictum that his appreciation of Shakespeare was merely phrasenhaft is softened only by the statement that an adequate recognition of the great Elizabethan was contrary to his very nature and would have interfered seriously with the development of his genius. The Just and the Lively by Michael Werth Gelber Pdf

John Dryden is the father of English literary criticism. In The Just and the Lively, Michael Werth Gelber provides the first complete study of his criticism since Dryden's death almost three hundred years ago. Through a detailed reading of each of his essays, the book explains and illustrates the unity and the development of Dryden's thought. It demonstrates that, even as he based his first principles on his own poems and plays, Dryden tried to resolve what, since the early sixteenth century, had been a key problem in western literature: how to reconcile the demand of classical unity with the bewildering variety of Renaissance drama and romance. The figure who emerges from these pages is a man deeply responsive to the social, political, and intellectual currents of his age. An important influence on critics as diverse as Samuel Johnson and T. S. Eliot, Dryden retains the power to enlighten and delight the reader of today.

Literary Criticism by Allan H. Gilbert Pdf

This anthology of literary criticism is no simple collection of fragments from great critics. It is, in a way, a documentary history of literary taste, or better, a documentary history of the taste of literary critics ... It contains material that is inaccessible in many university libraries and an index which ties together the various selections and gives the book a unity which most anthologies unfortunately lack ..." John Dryden by T.s. Eliot Pdf

Excerpt from John Dryden: The Poet, the Dramatist, the Critic Has - the importance of his influence. It is this nice ques tion of influence that I wish to investigate first, in relation to what I may call the filjmternawrymglmipwta tor, that is, in our history, we to say that poets like Shakespeare and Milton 'were without influence? Certainly not, but in fluence, in the sense in which we can cope with the term, is something more limited. The dis proportion between Shakespeare and his imme diate followers, among the dramatists, is so great that the influence of Shakespeare is a triflingthing in comparison with Shakespeare himself; and as for Milton, that was so peculiar a genius that although he had plenty of mimics during the eighteenth century, he can hardly be said to have any followers. For influence, as Dryden had influence, a poet must not be so great as to overshadow all followers. Dryden was followed' by Pope, and a century later, by Samuel John son; borh men of great original genius, who developed the medium left them by Dryden, in ways which cast honour both on them and on him. It should seem then no paradox to say that Dryden was the great influence upon English verse that he was, because he was not too great to have any influence at all. He was neither the consummate poet of earlier times, nor the eccen tric poet of later. He was happy both in his predecessors and in his successors. A hundred years rs a long time for the stamp of one man to remain upon a literature 5 poets' influence and reputation cannot last so long in our days; and 6' that makes Dryden a central, a typical figurein English letters. He is in himself the Malherbe, the Boileau, the Corneille and almost the Moliere (almost, because Congreve refined and surpassed him in comedy) of the seventeenth century in England; and to him, as much as to any indi vidual, we owe our civilisation. Gender, Theatre, and the Origins of Criticism by Marcie Frank Pdf

In Gender, Theatre and the Origins of Criticism, Marcie Frank explores the theoretical and literary legacy of John Dryden to a number of prominent women writers of the time. Frank examines the pre-eminence of gender, sexuality and the theatre in Dryden's critical texts that are predominantly rewritings of the work of his own literary precursors - Ben Jonson, Shakespeare and Milton. She proposes that Dryden develops a native literary tradition that is passed on as an inheritance to his heirs - Aphra Behn, Catharine Trotter, and Delarivier Manley - as well as their male contemporaries. Frank describes the development of criticism in the transition from a court-sponsored theatrical culture to one oriented toward a consuming public, with very different attitudes to gender and sexuality. This study also sets out to trace the historical origins of certain aspects of current criticism - the practices of paraphrase, critical self-consciousness and performativity.
